초록

J. S. 게일의 「춘향」(“Choon Yang”)은 이해조의 『옥중화』의 영역으로 The Korea Magazine(1917.9~1918.8)에 연재되었다. 「춘향」은 『옥중화』의 직역본이자 완역본으로서의 번역문학사적 의의를 가진다. 이 논문은 원전과 영역본의 대비검토를 통해 게일의 번역 원리와 지향점을 살피고자 한다. 게일의 전반적인 번역 원칙은 직역과 의역의 이분법적 논리를 떠나 원전의 감각(불변의 본질)을 독자들에게 전달하는 것이었다. The Korea Magazine의 편집자들은 이 영역본이 원전의 직역이기에 충실한 번역이라 표방하였다. 영역본과 원전의 대비결과 게일은 대부분 원전을 충실하게 번역하고자 하였지만 어떤 부분을 일관성 있게 누락, 변형, 첨가하였다. 판소리계 소설의 특징인 장황한 사설 부분의 누락은 편집상의 이유, 독자의 지루함을 덜기 위한 편의적 선택으로 보였다. 그러나 원전에서 해학적인 효과를 주는 장치이지만 비윤리적이거나 성적인 언어 표현, 욕설, 생리현상과 관련된 표현 등이 「춘향」에서 의도적으로 배제되었다. 이것은 게일의 충실한 직역 원칙에 상반되는 다른 번역 원칙의 존재를 드러낸다. 서구인 독자를 염두에 둔 이러한 게일의 자기검열로 인해 「춘향」은 『옥중화』에 비해 언어가 순화되고 그 결과 등장인물이 순화되고, 남녀 관계가 이상화되었다. 게일은 「춘향」의 서문에서 이 번역의 목적을 한국(동양)의 이상 즉 여성의 정절을 서구인에게 전하는 것으로 밝히고 있다. 게일의 충실한 직역 원칙과 이와 모순되는 예외적 번역 양상은 모두 게일이 궁극적으로 전하고자 하는 감각, 즉 한국(동양)의 이상, 여성의 정절을 독자에게 전하는데 기여한 것으로 보인다.

영어초록

This paper is aimed to answer two questions based on a comparative analysis of J. S. Gale's English translation “Choon Yang”and its original Korean version Okjoongwha. The first question is what his translation principle was and the second question is what he ultimately intended to render through his translation principle and its exceptional examples conflicting with his principle.
The editors of The Korea Magazine claimed that “Choon Yang”was a literal translation of Okjoongwha so it is a faithful translation. Richard Rutt also confirmed their claim by remarking that “Choon Yang”was the only translation of‘Choonhyang Chun’among its many English translations. Gale's“Choon Yang”has a significant place in the translation history of‘Choonhyang Chun' by its full and literal translation. However, the investigation into Gale's actual translation practices reveals that there is another implicit translation objective.
Gale thought that translation was to make some sense(the constant quality) of an original text inscribed into a translated text of another language. What was the sense of Okjoonwha that Gale intended to conserve in his translation practice? That was the Korean women's faithfulness designated as the Eastern Idea which is a foreign concept to Westerners. For this, Gale tried to make a faithful translation of the original version. However, his intention should also meet the needs of Western readers who regarded Gale's“Choon Yang”as a literary translation of a foreign language. Gale needed to make a delicate negotiation between his translation principle and the readers' reception.
For this, Gale consistently omitted and transformed some parts of the original version, simultaneously sticking to his literal translation principle. Gale mainly purified unethical, sexual, coarse, and physiological behaviors and expressions which the original version intended mostly for humorous effect. These translation practices contributed to the idealization of the lovers' relation and especially the main male character Dream Dragon. Gale's seemingly conflicting translation principle and his actual translation practices, however, were compatible in terms of his ultimate translation objective to deliver the Eastern Ideal to Western readers.
