문학 속의 인천 심상, 그 문학지리학적 접근(2) - 『임거정』 『인간문제』 『해변의 시』 『작고인천문인선집·2』 를 중심으로 (A Study on Inchoenhak as a Literary Geography-II)

초록

이 연구는 문학연구와 문학지리학(literary geography)이 이상과 같은 관계에 있는 점을 근거로 한국현대소설에 나타나는 ‘인천’과 그 ‘인근 공간·땅’이 배경으로 된 홍명희의 「임거정(林巨正)」, 강경애의 「인간문제」, 김동석의 「해변의 시」, 인천문인협회편, 「작고인천문인선집·2(소설)」을 대상으로 인천의 정체성을 연구한 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다.
첫째, 「임거정」의 주인공 임꺽정이 인천의 부평 구슬원에서 무예의 스승을 만났다는 것과 계양산이 임꺽정의 스승인 주팔에게 도술을 가르친 은둔처라는 것은 인천이란 공간의 장소신화(place myth)에 중요한 의미를 지닌다. ‘인천, 부평, 계양산, 소래산 등’의 실재 공간명과 소설의 인물이 벌리는 사건이 장소애(場所愛, sense of place·topophilia)를 형성시키기 때문이다. 그 결과 「임거정」의 인천은 새로운 세상을 꿈꾸는 의혈남아가 앞날을 준비하는 구원의 공간이란 의미로 나타난다.
둘째, 「인간문제」에 나타나는 인천의 표상(表象)은 낡은 것과 새로운 것이 맞서고, 좌절한 사람들이 희망을 품고 제기를 노리는 긍정적 공간이다. 공업도시로서의 인천은 그 현실이 엄혹하지만 외상(外相)은 활력이 넘치는 곳이다. 곧 인천은 노동자들의 방어적 삶의 현장, ‘인천=희망’이다.
또 일제의 조선지배로 소작농이 이농하고, 이 사람들이 도시 빈민, 노동자가 되었지만 그들이 공업지대 인천에 진출하면서 수동적 인간에서 능동적 인간으로, 노동자의 계급성을 깨우치는 주체적 인간상으로 성격이 변한다. 이런 변화의 중심이 바로 인천이다. 이런 점에서 「인간문제」의 인천은 「임거정」에 나타나던 그 ‘새로운 세상’이란 인천의 공간심상(image of space)과 맥락이 닿는다.
셋째, 「해변의 시」에 나타나는 인천은 밝고 맑다. 인간세상을 낙관적으로 관조할 때만 형성될 수 있는 생명긍정의 서정적 공간이다. 이것은 인천에 대한 단순한 장소애가 아니다. 그것 보다 산업화에 부대끼고 찌들기 전 친환경도시 인천의 원형 복원이다. 이런 점에서 장소신화의 의미가 크다. 인천이란 장소가 동물적인 생존 수준을 넘어서는 어떤 것, 인간의 삶을 더욱 풍부하게 하는 그런 공간으로 인식하고 있는 점 때문이다.
「작고인천문인선집·2(소설)」에 수록된 작품에 나타나는 ‘월미도, 작약도, 연안부두, 제물포, 중국인 거리’ 같은 장소명은 인천이 고향이거나 체험한 사람에게는 인천적인 장소혼(spirit of place)을 자극한다. 인천이 고향이던 고향이 아니든 인천 체험을 통하여 그 나름의 의미로 가득 찬 구체적 장소감(sense of place)을 획득한 까닭이다. 그리고 그 장소감은 역사의 그늘로서가 아니라 그런 역사를 헤치고 나오는 불굴의 인천을 상징하는 장소신화(場所神話·place myth)의 표상임을 확인하였다.

영어초록

This study based on the relationship between literary study and literary geography described above brings the result on the basis of the studying of Incheon appearing in Korean modern novel and the notion of ‘nearby area and land’were the background modern novels and the identity of them such as ‘Limgeojeong’ of Hong Myunghee, ‘Inganmunjae(human problem)’ of Kang Kyungae, ‘Haebyuneusi(the poem of the beach) of Kim Dongsuk, a volume of Incheon literary writers Association and a selection of the deceased Incheon literary writer(novel vol.2) as belows.
Firstly, there are two important things on the place of myth that the hero of the Novel ‘Lim geojeong’ meets his master of martial arts at Gusulone, Incheon and Keyang-mountain is the place of seclusion of Jupal, the martial arts master of Lim Geojeong teaches martial arts to the hero. Since those real name of places and a series of events made by hero of this novel make a sense of place of topophilia, Incheon means the place of redemption for hero who is the man of justice, prepares near future, and dreams of a whole new world.
Secondly, in the novel of ‘Inganmunjae(human problem)’, the symbol of Incheon is the positive place and there are some conflicts between old things and new things and people who prepare restoration wishing hope. Incheon, as an industrial city, is a vivid city apparently even though the reality is so harsh. This means Incheon is the place of defensive life of the workers and the hope by itself. Moreover, tenant farmers were moved and then became worker and city poor people because of the colonialization of Japanese empire, but they changed their passive characteristics to active ones and became independent people with the awaking concept of work of life. Incheon has been laid in the center of all these changes. In this sense, two different notions of Incheon which were shown in ‘Inganmunjae(human problem)’ and in the novel of ‘Limguejeong’ as a whole new world are in collusion with the image of space of Incheon.
Thirdly, Incheon looks shiny and clear in ‘Haebyuneusi(the poem of the beach)’. However, this is only possible when we view the world as a lyrical positive life place. In other words, this is not a simple sense of place of topophilia but a restoration of itself used to be an eco-friendly city prior to become industrialization. In this sense, Incheon is more meaningful in the sense of place myth because it was regarded as a place beyond the survival and enriching life.
Finally, the spirit of place was stimulated by the name of places such as Wolmi-island, Yeonan-budu(harbor), Zaemulpo and Chinese town mentioned in the deceased Incheon literary writer(novel vol.2) and has influenced some people whose hometown are Incheon and other people has acquired a full sense of place of Incheon through experiences regardless of their hometown. Also, the sense of place is verified as the place myth not as the shadow of history but as the place myth, representing the invincibility and showing the breaking through of the history.
