양의 도살에 비유된 타심상속의 단절과 과보- 『유식이십론』 18~20시송과 자주를 중심으로 - (Termination and its result of saṃtānāntara described by sheep’s death in vv. 18-20 in Viṃśatikā Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi)

초록

세친(世親)의 『유식이십론』에서 심상속에 관한 논의는 제17시송에서 일단락된다. 제18~20시송은 심상속을 인정하는 실재론자(=경량부)가 외계 실재를 부정할 경우 생길 수 있는 모순으로서 타상속(saṃtānāntara), 즉 타자의 심상속에 관하여 반론하고, 세친이 답론하는 형식으로 구성되어 있다.
반론자는 비록 스스로의 심상속이 인정되더라도 타자의 심상속은 인정될 수 없기 때문에 실재하는 외계 존재를 인정할 수밖에 없다는 것을 반증하고자 한다. 그는 ‘도살자에 의한 양의 살해’라는 극단적인 예증을 통해서 외계 실재를 대신하는 타상속을 인정하는 경우, 양의 죽음과 그 살해에 따른 도살자의 과보가 성립할 수 없다는 논지를 전개한다. 이에 대해서 세친은 증상성(增上性, adhipatitva)을 근거로 하여, 비실재의 타상속의 경우도 실재론자의 주장과 동일한 현상이 일어나므로, 타상속이 외계실재를 대신하더라도 결코 문제가 되지 않음을 논증해 나간다.
필자는 실재론자의 반론은 세친의 자․타상속을 존재론적으로 실재한다는 가정 아래서 펼치는 논지라고 파악한다. 이에 반해서 세친의 답론은 상속 자체를 비실재라고 파악한다고 생각한다. 그는 실재론자의 일상과 꿈 모두가 현현한 양태에 불과하다는 유식의 기본 취지에 입각하여 다양한 비유에 의해서 타상속은 비실재으로서 존재한다는 것을 증명한다.
따라서 반론자는 타상속을 실재로 파악하고, 세친은 그것을 비실재로 파악하는 것이 본 논란에 있어 양자의 견해차이의 핵심이다. 이와 같은 외계 실재와 타상속을 둘러싼 경량부와 유식학파의 논쟁을 분석한 본고는 향후 상속에 관한 두 학파의 입장을 보다 세밀하게 규명할 수 있는 실마리를 제공할 것이다.

영어초록

In Viṃśatikā Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi written by Vasubandhu(ca. 400-480) the controversy on the continuum of consciousness(saṃtāna) theory has been ended at the 17th verse and its auto commentary. The 18th-20th verse focused on by this paper is composed of the refutation on the continuum of other’s consciousness(saṃtānāntara) between Sautrāntika school represented by the realist in these verses and Vasubandhu represented by Vijñaptimātra school. The realist objects the continuum of other’s consciousness to be approbated, though the continuum of own consciousness is assented to. Contrarily, Vasubandhu answers that the continuum of other’s consciousness is presumed as existence instead of external object.
The objector says that daily life exists apparent real, thus external things are not beings of the continuum of other’s consciousness. In the case that death of a sheep by a butcher, for example, both the sheep and the butcher have to be real to come into the action of both the sheep’s being killed and butcher’s being killing. In addition if each were the continuum of other’s consciousness, there would have neither the result of sheep’s death nor of butchers’ killing in the future. On the contrary, Vasubandhu demonstrates that even though death of sheep by butchers occurs in the continuum of other’s consciousness, there would be the events as same as in real world insisted by the objector because predominant power(adhipatitva) affects with each other when the action of killing occurs between the sheep and the butcher.
This paper understands the position of the realist and of Vasubandhu on the discussion: the realist is based on the idea that the continuum is real(vastu) as external thing separated and independent. The realist separates a status in dream from it in wake-up. From the view of Vasubandhu, however, the continuum is unreal and illusionary as external thing. He regards being and action both in dream and in waking up as unreal, but there is predominant power is feebler in dream than in waking up. Through the analyzing of the controversy on continuum of other’s consciousness between Sautrāntika and Yogācāra in Vijnaptimatratasiddhi, In contrasting to the fact that Yogācāra’s continuum of consciousness is mythical being made up by designation (vyavahāra), I have a doubt that continuum of consciousness of Sautrāntika may not unreal.
