초록

이 논문은 퇴옹 성철(退翁性徹, 1912~1993)의 실천성과 지성성의 구명을 통해 그의 실천적 지성상을 조망하기 위한 글이다. 그는 자기혁신을 통해 사회 혁신을 이루고자 하였다. 성철이 강조한 자기 혁신은 자기와의 싸움을 통해 체득한 지성성의 확보이며, 사회 혁신은지성성의 체인으로부터 비롯되는 실천성의 실현이다. 그가 두 겹네 쌍의 부정을 넘어선 ‘쌍차’(雙遮)와 두 겹 네 쌍의 긍정을 넘어선‘쌍조’(雙照), 차조동시(遮照同時)의 중도사관을 통해 실현하려 했던것은 우리의 자유의지(業)가 역사의 주체이자 동인이며 제 자신임을분명히 알리고자 함이었다.
쌍차와 쌍조는 『반야경』과 『중론』 등의 반야경론에서 주로 등장하는 개념이다. 특히 선법의 교학적 토대인 삼론학에서는 이 용어를자주 사용하고 있다. 여기서 생멸(生滅), 상단(常斷), 일이(一異), 래거연구논문퇴옹 성철의 실천성과 지성성― ‘산속의 육신’과 ‘현실의 원력’의 중층성을 중심으로 ― 고영섭(동국대) 『한국불교사연구』(Journal for the Study of Korean Buddhist History) 제15호, pp.4~69, 서울: 한국불교사학회, 2019.06.30 고영섭_ 퇴옹 성철의 실천성과 지성성 5 (來去) 등 상반된 네 쌍의 개념을 모두 부정하는 불생불멸, 불상부단, 불일불이, 불래불거는 쌍차(雙遮)의 문구라고 할 수 있다. 이와달리 불생불멸, 불상부단, 불일불이, 불래불거 등 상반된 네 쌍의개념을 모두 긍정하는 생멸, 상단, 일이, 래거는 쌍조(雙照)의 문구라할 수 있다. 성철은 선의 교학적 토대인 이들 삼론학의 쌍차와 쌍조개념을 원용하여 자신의 살림살이를 구축하였다.
붓다가 ‘천상천하 유아독존’(天上天下 唯我獨尊)의 연기법의 통찰을통해 ‘삼계개고 아당안지’(三界皆苦 我當安之)의 자비행의 실천을 한것처럼, 성철 또한 경학 즉 고전 해석에 반영된 지성성과 경세학즉 세상 경영에 유용한 사상적 제시를 통해 실천성을 보여주었다.
그의 실천성과 지성성은 자비의 중도행과 지혜의 연기법을 아우르며 나아가는 것이었다. 성철은 경학과 경세학, 지성성과 실천성을아우르며 살고자 했고 실제로 그러한 모습을 보여주며 살았다. 이때문에 산속에만 살았던 성철의 살림살이만 보고 그가 현실에 살지 않았다고 비판할 수만은 없을 것이다. 그는 보다 근본적인 자기혁신을 통해야만 구체적인 사회 혁신을 이뤄낼 수 있다고 확신하였다.
성철은 문제의 원인을 밖에서 찾기보다는 문제의 안에서 찾으려고하였다. 그는 문제의 안에서 문제의 원인을 해결하면 문제의 결과가 밖으로 나타나지 않는다고 보았다. 마찬가지로 성철은 교단 내부의 문제를 먼저 교단 내부의 원인에서 찾고자 헌신하였고, 사회내부의 문제를 우선 사회 내부의 원인에서 찾도록 촉구하였다. 물론 문제를 해소하기 위해서는 수행의 난경과 시간의 배가가 요청되지만 그는 문제의 원인을 뿌리까지 뽑아내어 더 이상의 문제를 만6 한국불교사연구_ 제15호(2019.06.30) 들지 않고자 했다. 그 결과 성철은 우리 시대 불교계 안팎에서 가장커다란 영향을 미친 실천적 지성으로서 자리해 오고 있다. 성철을우리 시대의 ‘국민 선사’ 혹은 ‘국사’ 또는 ‘왕사’로 부를 수 있는 근거는 그의 철저한 자기 혁신에서 비롯된 강력한 사회 혁신의 가능성에서 비롯되는 것일 것이다

영어초록

This paper examines the active enlightenment of Toeong Sungchul (退翁性徹, 1912~1993) by reflecting on both his activism and enlightenment.
He attempted to innovate society by innovating himself. The selfinnovation he tried to carry out was intended to accomplish the spiritual awakening that can be obtained as a result of one’s own efforts, and the social innovation he tried to carry out was the working of one’s enlightenment in the world. In Sungchul’s ideology, people’s freewill is the main body that can cause the innovation of society, and this freewill represents the middle way that can be obtained as a result of awakening to the logic of quadruple mode dual negation and dual affirmation.
The concepts of dual negation and dual affirmation make up the ideology that represents the prajnā school, which is explained in the sutras — such as prajnāpāramitā sutra and Mādhyamaka-kārikā. This concept is the key doctrine of Sanlun, which is the ideological basis of the Seon 68 한국불교사연구_ 제15호(2019.06.30) school. Here, quadruple mode double negation means eight negations of “neither arising nor ceasing, neither eternal nor impermanent, neither one nor many, and neither coming nor going.” On the other hand, quadruple mode dual affirmation is the concept of affirming all these — affirming both arising and ceasing, both eternal and impermanent, both one and many, and both coming and going. Sungchul used both these concepts of negation and affirmation and applied them in his practices.
Buddha showed two main characteristics: awakening and compassionate acts. He awakened to the truth of dependent origination, as represented in his words: “I alone am the honored one in the heavens and on earth,” and he also practiced compassionate acts as a result of awakening to the sufferings of all beings. Likewise, Sungchul showed the same two characteristics by way of encompassing both compassionate acts of the middle way and awakening to the reality of dependent origination. He wanted to live a harmonious life encompassing both awakening and compassionate activism, and his life reflected that he was successful in doing so. In that sense, his life cannot be evaluated as monastic only because he physically lived in the temple deep in the mountain. He was confident in his insight that the innovation of society should be and can be accomplished only when the innovation of the self is attained on the more fundamental level.
Sungchul did not try to find the solution to a problem from outside of the problem. Instead, he tried to find it from the problem itself, and he was confident that, when a solution can be found from the problem itself, the issue will not cause any further trouble. For instance, concerning the problem of the religious sect to which he belonged, Sungchuldedicated himself to finding the solution from inside the sect, and, concerning the problem of an organization, he taught people to find the solution from inside the organization. Occasionally, it took some time to solve the problem, but Sungchul wanted to root out the foundation of the problem so that the same issue would not return in the future.
The reason he can be called “National Seon Master,” “National Preceptor,” or “Royal Preceptor” is that his teachings expressed the possibility that social-innovation can be driven by the strong power of self-innovation.
