초록

오늘날 남북한의 단절이 벌써 반세기를 넘어서면서 남과 북은 각자의 체제 속에서 서로 다른 문화를 만들어왔다. 이 논문은 그 변화의 현 시점을 점검하기 위한 것으로 같은 시기에 동일한 역사적 인물(황진이)을 각기 다른 개성적 관점으로 다루고 있는 두 편의 장편소설을 통해, 남과 북의 서로 다른 여성미에 대한 관점을 비교 고찰했다.
첫째, 작품 속 이상적 여성상 재생산의 기저인 사회, 문화적 배경 측면에서 논의되는 여성미와 관련하여 두 작품을 분석한 결과, 남한 소설 『나, 황진이』에서는 전통윤리관에 대한 저항과 ‘여성’이라는 벽을 뛰어넘어 실존적 개인으로서 부딪히는 고독과 여성의식을 형상화하고자 한 것을 알 수 있다. 주인공 황진이는 치열한 자기탐구와 지식을 통해 흔들리지 않는 여성성을 보여주는데. 이는 서구주의 페미니즘의 영향을 받은 남한 여성들 의식의 한 지향점이다. 존재로서, 개인으로서 자아를 완성하려는 오늘날의 여성의식이 탄생시킨 여성미가 그대로 주인공에게 투영된 것이다. 북한소설 『황진이』는 얼핏 보기에는 기존의 주체문학과 다르게 보이지만, 사실은 혁명적인 진취성과 적극성의 여성미를 지닌 새로운 인간형으로 황진이를 재탄생시켜 도식적인 북한 여성정책의 선전기능을 다하고 있었다.
둘째, 두 작품 속에 표현된 여성미와 관련된 이미지와 관습을 살펴보았다. 남한 소설 『나, 황진이』에서는 지나치게 물질적이고 현시적인 포스트모더니즘시대의 미감을 뛰어넘는 절대미는 곧 관념적인 추구라고 보고, 이런 관점으로 여성을 들여다보았다. 따라서 황진이의 겉으로 드러난 외양미는 그다지 중요하게 여기지 않고, 그녀가 지향하는 초월적 자아의 내면세계에서 황진이의 아름다움을 찾고자 했다. 이에 비해 북한소설 『황진이』는 이중적 여성관을 보이는데, 그것은 바로 주체형 인간으로서 북한여성이 안고 있는 괴리이기도 하다. 소설 속 여성미에 관한 감각요소는 주로 시각이었으며 빛으로 표현된다. 황진이의 미모에 대한 묘사 또한 거의 눈에 집중되어 있어 황진이를 하나의 의지적 개체로 보고 있으며 진취적인 대담성, 활기찬 열정, 주체적인 자립성 그 자체로 그들의 이상적 여성형이 된다. 그러면서 여종인 이금이의 미모는 황진이와는 전혀 다르게 에로틱하게 묘사되고 있다. 이는 북한의 여성미가 사회주의 여성미와 전형적인 에로틱한 여성미로 이중적 잣대임을 잘 대변하고 있는 것이기도 하다.
살펴본 두 소설 모두 각자가 속한 사회의 당대 미감으로 서로 다른 여성미를 표현하면서 다양한 방식으로 새로운 의미를 재창조해내고자 했다. 그러나 남북한 여성 모두 공통된 가부장적 억압에서 출발하여 공통된 변화로의 지향을 통해 각성해 간다는 사실을 알게 되었고, 이 깨달음은 새로운 한국 여성미확립의 바탕이 될 것이다.

영어초록

Division of South and North Korea (ROK and DPRK) has now approached almost sixty years. During this period, many things, in cultural aspect, have changed and difference between South and North Korea has become considerable. In order to examine the current situation of these changes, this paper will focus on the different points of view on feminine of South and North Korea through these two novels which dealt with historical character (Hwangjinee) of the same period in different individual viewpoints.
First of all, two pieces of work are examined according to the feminine in the theory of western feminism. In South Korean novel, ‘Na, Hwangjinee’, the isolation and feminity coming from women herself overcoming the wall of being a woman and resistance towards traditional morals are portrayed. The heroine, Hwangjinee shows very solid feminine through competitive self-pursuit and knowledge. This is the aim for the consciousness of women in South Korea whom are affected by western feminism. The feminine which women’s self-consciousness in these day has made is being a complete self, or individual. This is exactly reflected on the heroine.
North Korean novel, ‘Hwangjinee’ seems different from the pre-existing subject literature, but in fact, it has reincarnated Hwangjinee into a new human existence who has feminine character with revolutionary progressivism and positive attitude. Thus, it is fully functioning as propaganda of schematic women’s policy of North Korea.
Second, the images and tradition regarding feminine that are portrayed in these two works are overviewed. In South Korean novel, ‘Na, Hwangjinee’, women are looked from the viewpoint that the ideal pursuit is the absolute beauty which crosses over this materialistic society’s sense of beauty. Therefore, the outer beauty of Hwangjinee is not considered very important, but rather, it tries to look for the beauty from the transcendent inner-self that Hwangjinee pursues. Her beauty is accomplished by the education and training, and her arts are depicted very meditatively.
North Korean novel, ‘Hwangjinee’ shows a dual points of view on women, and this is an estrangement of North Korean women as Juche(self reliance) style humans. In the novel, the sense used to look at the feminine is often just the visual sense, and this feminine is expressed as a bright light. The description on Hwangjinee’s beauty is mostly focused on her eyes. This means that they consider Hwangjinee as very independent individual and her progressive courage, burning passion, and self-reliance, for them, is an ideal feminine image. Meanwhile, Hwangjinee’s female servant, Leegeum’s outer look on the contrast is described very erotically. This speaks for the fact that North Korean feminine is both the social and traditional erotic feminine.
These two pieces of work all express feminine according to their own society’s sense of beauty, and try to recreate the new definition in various ways. However, we are aware of the fact that South and North Korean women have both started from the same repression of patrilineal family system and are leading into the same changes through awakening. This realization will be the basic ground for the new establishment of feminine.
