<세종대왕, 한글문화시대를 열다> 전시 속 홍순명, 정연두&이지원 작품을 통해 본 사고의 충돌 (Conflicts of Views through Artworks of Hong Soun, Jung Yoon doo and Lee Ji Won in the exhibition )

초록

<세종대왕 한글시대를 열다>는 한글을 제창하여 우리민족을 지성으로 이끈 세종대왕의 업적을 자료, 유물과 현대미술을 함께 조우시켜 새롭게 해석한 전시다.
이 전시는 같은 시각분야이지만 교류가 없었던 문화유산, 고미술을 다루는 박물관에서 현대미술을 전략적으로 접목하여 새로운 문맥으로 펼쳐내는 실험이다. 15세기 한글창제 당시를 해석한 작품 중에는 문명충돌과 도상충돌, 이미지와 서사의 문화적 긴장에 관한 작품이 등장한다. 당시 세종의 조력자들을 뒷모습으로만 표현한 홍순명의 <주변인연작>은 역사 안에서 공신도상이었던 초상화의 의미를 전복시킨다. 인물의 중요도와 성격은 얼굴의 특징으로는 알 수 있지만 뒷모습으로는 알기 어렵다. 정연두 &이지원의 <이도삼희>는 최만리, 신숙주, 이천이라는 세종시대의 성향이 다른 학자의 심리적 대립구조에 대한 영상작품이다.
각각의 화면은 병렬로 비춰지며 한 화면을 형성해 관객은 3명의 다른 관점과 심정을 비교할 수 있는 구조를 갖는다. 위에서 내려다보는 카메라의 시선은 중국 산수화 관점을 은유하며 전통과 사대의 이상을 고수하는 최만리를 투영한다. 정면으로 나아가는 시선을 갖는 산책은 욕망의 단계를 밟아가는 신숙주의 태도를 보여준다. 사물을 보고 관찰하며 산책하는 카메라의 시선은 기술자 이천의 경험인식을 대변한다.
주제전의 전시 안에서 역사적 사료를 현대의 시각과 함께 재해석하며 다양한 실천들의 관계성을 보여주며 이미지와 서사의 문화적 긴장을 탐구하는 이번 연구는 전시문화의 담론환경을 정착시킬 뿐만 아니라 폭넓은 접근에 기여하게 될 것이다.

영어초록

This exhibition, <King Sejong the Great Opens The Age of Hangeul Culture>, reinterpreted ancient relics and documents – which are the legacy of King Sejong who created the Korean alphabet, Hangeul, and led his people to the world of intelligence with contemporary arts.
It was an experiment to interpret in a new context by grafting a museum of cultural heritages and ancient arts onto contemporary arts as the two fields of art have had no exchanges although they are both visual art. Artworks about the clash of civilizations, opposition of literate elites, and images and narrations of cultural tensions are among the works that interpreted the period when Hangeul was created in the 15th century. Overthrowing the definition of a portrait, ‘Marginal man Series (Jubyeoninyeonjak)’ of Hong Soun illustrated back views of the facilitators of King Sejong at that time. Although their existence is true, the back views with abstractness of imaginary make people wonder and guess that figures in the portraits are men, classical scholars, nobles, monks, women, young, and old, arousing curiosity on anonymous figures. A figure’s importance and personality can be known with the face appearance, but not with the back view. We can only assume ages and the level of wealth by looking at the crown or hair style. Hong Soun is expressing that there are other diverse values, hidden and not chosen from some strong and supreme point of view.
“Idosamhui” of Jung Yoon doo and Lee Ji Won is a video clip on psychological confrontations facing Choe Manri, Shin Suk-ju and Lee Cheon, the three scholars with different political inclinations in the period of King Sejong.
The background of the video is Seongyojang in Gangneung - a typical noble house with 99 quarters built by Lee Nae beon, the 11th descendant of Prince Hyoryeong, a brother of King Sejong. There are no characters appearing in the scene; instead voices of the scholars as they stroll around with a camera view. Each screen is displayed in a row and forms one big screen; allowing audiences to compare different views and feelings of the three scholars.
The bird-eye view of a camera projects Choe Man ri who expresses Chinese landscape paintings metaphorically and adheres to tradition and toadyism. The straight angle shows the attitude of Shin Suk ju, who is treading the path of desire. The camera angle, which observes things, represents scientist Lee Cheon’s belief in empiricism.
This research, which reinterprets historical documents with a contemporary perspective, shows correlations of various practices, and explores images and narrations of cultural tensions in the main exhibition, will not only establish discourse milieu of exhibition culture but also contribute to a comprehensive approach.
