초록

본 연구는 무속신화 <바리공주>를 대상으로 바리공주 주변 인물의 신직 좌정과 그 의미에 관하여 관심을 가진다. 바리공주의 주변 인물이 바리공주와 함께 어떠한 신직에 좌정되고 그 신직이 의례에서 어떻게 재현되는지에 관한 의미를 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 <바리공주> 신화의 서사적 맥락과 함께 중부지역본에서 행해지고 있는 망자천도굿인 새남굿·진오기굿의 ‘도령돌기’의 의례적인 맥락을 살펴보았다. 바리공주의 신직과 주변 인물의 신직의 상관관계를 따져 <바리공주> 신화의 의미 확장과 심화를 꾀하였다. 여기서는 석가세존과 바리공주와 비리공덕 할미와 할아비의 관계맺기 방식과 부부의 양육 태도 및 역할, 이들의 내적 정체성 등과 관련하여 드러나지 않았던 숨은 서사적인 맥락과 의례가 지닌 의미와의 연결성을 중심으로 논의를 진행하였다.
<바리공주>에서 비리공덕 부부의 서사는 신화와 의례 속에 깃들어 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 바리공주가 홀로 어깨에 짊어질 삶과 죽음의 무게를 비리공덕 할미 할아비가 의례에 참여하여 그 짐을 덜어준다. 이들은 단순히 생명을 기르는 양육자가 아닌, 바리공주의 부모로 받아들여진다. 이를 통해 신화와 의례에 나타나는 의미가 연결된다. 비리공덕 부부는 신화와 무속 의례인 ‘말미’를 거쳐 ‘도령돌기’에서 바리공주와 소통하고, 망자를 서로 간에 연결하고 저승길에서 망자를 위해 바리공주를 보조한다. 비리공덕 부부는 공덕의 실천으로서 버려진 바리공주를 거두어 주었으며 세상 이치에 대한 앎을 알려준 인물이다. 바리공주가 나라의 절반을 거절한 배후에 중요하게 작용하고 있는 것은 비리공덕 부부가 그만큼 영향을 끼쳤던 까닭에 있다. 바리공주가 성장하면서 배우고 들었던 모든 것과 관련이 있다. 버려진 존재라는 바리공주의 정체성이 반영된 결과가 무조신, 인위왕이라는 신직이며, 비리공덕 부부는 자연의 이치를 깨닫게 하고, 공덕의 실천을 몸소 보여주며 경험하게 했다.
본 연구는 신화의 보여진 서사와 감춰진 서사에 주목하여 신화와 의례에서 비리공덕 부부의 역할과 신직 좌정과 그 의미에 대해서 살펴보았다. 여기서는 바리공주와 비리공덕 부부의 관계맺기 양상과 함께 신화의 인과관계에 주목하여 바리공주와 주변 인물의 신직을 이해할 수 있었다. <바리공주>에는 비리공덕 부부가 바리공주에게 베풀어주는 ‘공덕’은 보이지 않는 서사로 의미화되어 있다. 지장보살과 석가세존이 건넨 낙화를 통한 죄인 구제와 바리공주 자신이 구조된 경험을 통해 이 ‘자비의 마음’은 ‘공덕’과 함께 신화와 의례를 떠받치는 기둥이 된다. 즉 공덕의 ‘선행’과 ‘자비의 마음은 바리공주의 ‘희생’에서 비롯된 것이라 볼 수 있다. 신화 속에 존재하는 신성이 무속 의례에서 바리공주에 의하여 망자천도굿에서 구현되는 것이다.

영어초록

This study focuses on the shamanic myth <Princess Bari> and is interested in the sacred positions of the characters around Princess Bari and their meaning. The purpose of this study was to examine the meaning of what sacred positions the people around Princess Bari sit in together with Princess Bari and how those sacred positions are reproduced in rituals.
For this purpose, this study will examine the narrative context of the myth of <Princess Bari> and the ritual context of ‘Doryeongdolgi’ of Saenamgut and Jinogigut, which are rituals for relinquishing the dead that are performed in the central region. We decided to expand and deepen the meaning of the myth of <Princess Bari> by considering the correlation between Princess Bari's divine office and that of the people around her. Here, the discussion is centered on the connection between the meaning of the ritual and the hidden narrative context that was not revealed in relation to the relationship between the Buddha, Princess Bari, the grandmother and grandfather, the couple's parenting attitude and role, and their internal identity. proceeded.
In <Princess Bari>, we can see that the narrative of the couple of Virigo and Deok is embedded in myths and rituals. The weight of life and death that Princess Bari must bear on her shoulders alone is alleviated by Grandfather Biri Gongdeok by participating in her ritual. Birigongdeok and his wife share the heavy load with Princess Bari. They are accepted as Princess Bari's parents, not simply as caregivers of life. Through this, the meanings of myths and rituals are connected. The Birigongdeok couple communicates with Princess Bari at ‘Doryeongdolgi’ through ‘Malmi’, a myth and shamanic ritual, connects the dead with each other, and assists Princess Bari for the dead on the path to the underworld. As an act of merit, the couple took in the abandoned Princess Bari and taught them the knowledge of the ways of the world. The reason why Princess Bari rejected half the country was so important is because the couple had such an influence. It has to do with everything Princess Bari learned and heard as she grew up. The result that reflects Princess Bari's identity as an abandoned being is the divine office of Mujosin and King Inwi, which made the couple realize the principles of nature and experience the practice of merit by personally demonstrating it.
This study focused on the visible and hidden narratives of myths and examined the role of the couple in myths and rituals, the priestly seat, and its meaning. Here, by paying attention to the causal relationship in the myth along with the relationship between Princess Bari and the Viri meritorious couple, we were able to understand the divine duties of Princess Bari and the people around her. In <Princess Bari>, the ‘merit virtue’ given to Princess Bari by the corrupt couple is symbolized in an invisible narrative. Through the relief of sinners through falling flowers given by Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva and Buddha, and through Princess Bari's own experience of being rescued, this ‘heart of mercy’ becomes a pillar that supports myths and rituals along with ‘merit.’ In other words, it can be seen that the ‘good deeds’ of merit and the ‘heart of mercy’ originated from the ‘sacrifice’ of Princess Bari. The divinity that exists in mythology is embodied in the shamanic ritual by Princess Bari in the ritual of praying for the dead.
