이 논문은 1867년 설립된 ‘풀먼 궁전차 회사(Pullman Palace Car Company)’의 침대차 운행과 그것을 둘러싼 19세기 후반의 논쟁을 들여다본다. 19세기 후반 풀먼 침대차에 관한 담론은 상징적으로 ‘무엇이 미국적인가’라는 질문과 밀접하게 연결되어 있었다. 풀먼 침대차는 대자연과 야만을 정복하는 미국 기술 문명의 상징으로서 재건 이후 국민 통합이라는 과제를 떠안게 된 미국 사회에 국내 철도 여행이라는 국민주의적 여흥을 제시했다. 동시에 ‘궁전차’라는 명칭에서 드러나듯, 풀먼 침대차는 백인 유산계급을 정점으로 구축된 인종과 계급 질서를 바탕으로 설계된 공간이기도 했다. 그러나 19세기 후반 미국인들의 삶에서 중대한 영향력을 발휘하던 철도라는 대중교통에 연결되어 있다는 점으로 인해 풀먼 침대차는 배타적인 계급성을 유지하기 어려웠다. 침대차를 거리낌 없이 이용할 만한 경제적 여유를 갖추지 못한 중산층 이하 백인들에게, 풀먼 침대차는 재분배되어야 할 부의 일종이자 중산층으로 정체화할 수 있는 흑인에 맞서 사수해야 하는 미국 사회 질서의 상징이 되었다.

This paper traces the first four decades of the Pullman Palace Car Company’s operation of first-class sleeping cars. The Pullman car embodied contestations over the membership in the Gilded-Age American nation, despite its original inception as an upper-class institution. The cultural images of the “palace car” created by the company and its patrons imposed an orderly, unified social portrait of the nation. Externally, it presented a vision of subduing the natural wilderness of the West, symbolizing the advancement of the American civilization; internally, it reproduced a racial and class hierarchy concurrent with the interests of the white propertied class. The nineteenth-century history of the Pullman Palace Car Company—the extraordinary growth of the sleeping-car industry, ultimate establishment of a national monopoly, and its victory in the momentous clash with labor in 1894—may well seem to indicate the dominance of business elites in the American society during this period.
Still, there were also enduring currents of contestation, negotiation, and compromise, rather than unilateral white upper-class domination. During the latter half of the nineteenth century, the Pullman Company was both lionized as the innovator of long-distance rail travel and criticized for being monopolistic, expensive, and inhumane to its employees. Gilded-age discourses about Pullman cars, in essence, were interlocked with the question of who would define what is “American.” African Americans with sufficient means attempted to erase a tacit imposition of racial segregation by joining the Pullman scene. White Americans with lesser means, in contrast, attempted to erase the class-specific nature of the sleeping-car service while fighting against racial integration.
These various contestations came to a temporary confluence and resolution in the 1890s. As cheaper tourist sleepers and reduced sleeping car fares opened rail travel to a broader population base, racial segregation was officially established in the sleeping cars, in effect deploying Pullmans in service of the white republic. In the end, democratic ideals as the basis of American nationalism proved to be far more amenable to racial hierarchy than to class division at the turn of the twentieth century.
