초록

본 논의는 2016년 刘慈欣에 이어 아시아 여성 최초로 Hugo Award 최우수 중단편 부분 수상(『北京折疊』)의 영예를 안은 郝景芳의 작품 세계 고찰을 통해 현실과 긴밀한 관계를 맺어 온 當代 중국 과환의 현재를 탐색하고 나아가 그것과 세계와의 감응 방식을 밝히는 시도이다. 郝景芳의 작품이 이성주의의 계몽적 기획의 차원을 넘어 배제된 사람들을 통해 인간을 인간답게 만드는 본질에 대한 탐구 의식에 기반 한다고 할 때, 우리는 과환『北京折疊』과『弦歌』를 통해 그 상징적 의미에 가까이 다가설 수 있다. 본 논의에서 두 작품을 분석함에 있어 과학과 정치 그리고 사회와 인간과의 관계를 규명하는 방향으로 나아간 것도 근대사가 부여해 온 철학이라는 물음에 대한 답을 구하고자 함에 있었다 해도 과언이 아니다. 따라서 작품에서 연속적으로 제시되는 과학의 속성과 정치와의 복잡한 결합 관계 그리고 고도로 발달한 과학기술 단계로 이동할수록 농후해지는 균질화 된 비인간성이라는 문제는 근대인의 내적 형식으로 존재하는 시간관념에서 비롯된 진보 개념에 대한 재론의 방향으로 우리를 이끎으로써 과거 전체를 새로운 시각에서 볼 수 있는 시각과 이상적 미래관을 제시해 주고 있다. 이는 근대 과학 기술 발전의 또 다른 이름은 과학과 기술 나아가 정치적 영역을 위해 바쳐진 인간의 고귀한 덕목이기에 허울뿐인 인간의 이익 추구를 명목으로 상실된 자연을 다시 소환해야 한다는 의미이기도 하다. 이에『弦歌』에 이르러 작가의 태도는 새로운 시대에 들어섰다 강하게 믿는 근대인의 무분별한 비행을 넘어 더욱 정교하고 심오해진 서술적 배치를 따라 확고한 주제의식으로 전환되고 있다.『弦歌』에서 비가역적인 시간관이 무화됨으로써 과거가 되돌아오고 이항대립의 원리에 따른 삶의 규율이 해체되는 것도 그것이 인간이 아닌 비인간적인 것과의 관계 속에서 도덕의 실재성을 찾아야 한다는 작가의 소신을 담아내고 있기 때문이다. 이처럼 외부와의 새로운 관계를 생성하고 이질적이고 비인간적인 존재와 최대한 공존하는 가운데서 내적 발전의 실마리를 찾아내야 한다는 작가의 단호한 믿음은 인간중심주의를 기치로 삼는 근대세계의 틀 속에서 인간을 해방시키고 순수한 개인성을 회복해내는 일로 이어지고 있다. 요컨대 과거와 연결되지 않은 순간들과 비난만이 남은 오늘날, 인간은 어떠한 상황에서도 흔들리지 않는 정신과 주체성을 무기로 타자와 관계함으로써 우리 선택의 자유를 제한하는 시대란 존재하지 않는다는 사실을 잊지 말며, 모든 것을 양극이 아닌 분리 불가능한 집합으로 사유해야할 필요가 있다. 이렇게 볼 때 오늘날 郝景芳 과환의 세계와의 감응점은 일상적 인간성을 회복하고 조화와 균형의 세계를 모색함으로써 제대로 된 상황 인식과 문제 해결을 위한 방안에 접근하는 지점에서 시작되고 있다 할 수 있다. 사회와 분리된 순수한 자연을 생각해 온 근대주의의 잘못된 관념을 지적하고 세계 위기의 본질을 명확히 인식하려는 태도에서 찾아낸 도덕의 최상의 가치를 통해서 말이다.

영어초록

This paper is an attempt to reveal the close relationship contemporary Chinese Science Fiction has with reality. The paper attempts to show Chinese science fiction as a way of responding to the real world through thorough analysis of the works of Hao Jingfang, the winner of the Hugo Award – a first for an Asian female. Hao Jingfang's work is based on the inquiry into consciousness, the essence of what makes human beings human, through people who are excluded beyond the level of enlightened planning. We can get close to the symbolic meaning through the science fiction works Beijing Folding and Xian ge. It is no exaggeration to say that in analyzing the two works in this paper, the method to identify the relationship between science and politics, and society and human beings was to seek answers to the question of philosophy given by modern history. Therefore, the problems of the complex nature of science presented continuously in the works, its complex connections with politics, and the homogenized “nonhumanity” that deepens as we move to the highly developed stage of science and technology, leads us to reconsider the concepts of ‘progress'. It is to give us a vision of the whole past and a vision of the ideal future. It means that we have to restore the lost nature in the name of pursuit of human benefit, which is merely a figurehead, while striving towards the noble virtue of human beings being dedicated to science, technology and the political sphere. Therefore, the retrospective attitude of the artist in Folding Beijing has been transformed into a firm subject by a more elaborate and critical narrative arrangement following the indiscreet acts of a strongly believing modern man who entered a new era. The reason why the irreversible time-line disappeared in the Xian ge, and the past turns back and dismantled the discipline of life according to dualism, is that it reflects the author's desire to find the reality of morality in relation to the inhuman and non-human. The reason why we need to recover the problem-free normality even if we leave the individual freely in the frame work of the modern world, which is based on anthropocentrism. It follows from the author's firm belief that humans should find a clue of an internal development in the environment which would create a new relationship with the outside, allowing coexistence with non-human beings to the greatest extent possible. In short, today with unconnected moments and groundless criticism, we need to not forget that there is no temporal flow that restricts our freedom of choice through relating with others by having an unshakeable spirit and subjectivity in any circumstance, and need to think of everything as an inseparable set, not a polarity. In this sense, the point of contact with the world of Hao Jingfang's science fiction today starts from approaching the right situational awareness, using the right problem-solving methods of restoring basic humanity by seeking the world of harmonious and balanced thought. The best value of morality is found in the attitude of pointing out the wrong notion of modernism that considers pure nature separate from society, and in recognizing the nature of the world crisis clearly.
