초록

본 논문은 한국전쟁 초기에 발표된 전쟁문학 속 ‘공화국 영웅’의 초상이 북한의군사적 이상형의 기원임을 조명한다. ‘공화국 영웅’이라는 명예 칭호는 북한이 계속되는 전쟁에서 조속한 승리를 촉진할 목적으로 1950년 6월 30일 제정한 것이다.
이 칭호는 전투에서 영웅적인 활약을 펼친 조선인민군 군관과 병사에게 수여되었다. 8월 4일, ‘공화국 영웅’에 대한 이야기를 보급하라는 김일성의 지시에 따라 북한 작가들은 ‘영웅들의 전투기’ 1권과 2권을 펴냈다. 이 이야기들은 ‘공화국의 영웅들’이 김일성의 항일무장투쟁에 뿌리를 둔 애국심과 그의 탁월한 전략을 모방하여전투에서 승리를 거두었다고 묘사한다. 이러한 서사는, 김일성이 ‘최고의 군사적 이상형’으로 등장하고, ‘공화국 영웅’이라는 칭호를 수여 받은 인민군 병사들이 김일성의 제자로 그려지는 의미론적 틀을 형성하였다. 1953년 8월부터 시작된 전후 복구과정과 1958년부터 시작된 사회주의 건설단계 전반에 걸쳐 ‘공화국 영웅’은 북한주민들의 롤-모델로 적극적으로 선전되었다. 이어 ‘불멸의 역사’ 시리즈는 김일성이한국전쟁 승리의 지도자이자 조직자라는 관념을 강화하는 구체적인 서사를 제시하였다. 북한이 본격적인 군사국가로 전환한 김정일의 선군시대와 뒤이은 김정은의선군혁명 시대에도 공화국 영웅들을 다룬 문학 작품들이 계속 출판되었다. 이 작품에서 수령은 최고의 군사적 이상형의 역할을 넘어, 영웅들의 애국적, 영웅적 행동을 이끌어가는 원동력이자 이들의 행동을 규율하는 상징적 아버지로 묘사된다. 한마디로 ‘공화국의 영웅’ 서사는 한국전쟁 초기부터 현재에 이르기까지 북한의 군사적 국가화를 추동하는 핵심적인 문화적 장치였다.

This paper illuminates that the portrayal of the ‘Hero of the Republic’ in war literature during the initial stages of the Korean War serves as the origin of North Korea’s military ideal type. On June 30, 1950, the Supreme People's Assembly of North Korea instituted the honorary title ‘Hero of the Republic’ as a strategic measure to ensure swift victories in the ongoing war. The title was bestowed upon courageous soldiers of the Korean People’s Army (KPA) who demonstrated heroism on the battlefield. On August 4, following Kim Il-sung's directive to propagate the stories of the ‘Heroes of the Republic,’ North Korean writers published “Yeongungdeul-ui Jeontugi [Heroes' Battle Stories].” These stories asserted that these heroes won a victory in battles by imitating Kim Il-sung’s patriotism, rooted in the anti-Japanese armed struggle, and his strategic brilliance. This narrative construction established a semantic framework wherein Kim Il-sung emerged as the “best military ideal type,” and KPA soldiers bestowed the title “Hero of the Republic” were depicted as his disciples. Throughout the post-war recovery process from August 1953 and the later socialist construction phase starting in 1958, the North Korean authorities instilled heroes of the Republic as role models among the North Korean people. Subsequently, the ‘Immortal History’ series supplied a concrete narrative reinforcing the notion that Kim Il-sung was the leader and organizer of the victory in the Korean War. Even during Kim Jong-il’s Songun era, marked by North Korea’s transition into a fully-fledged military state, and the succeeding Kim Jong-un’s Songun Revolution era, literary works featuring the heroes of the republic continued to be published. In these works, the portrayal of the supreme leader has evoloved from the best military ideal type into the driving force behind the patriotic and heroic actions of the heroes as well as the symbolic father who gazes and evaluates their actions. In summary, this paper highlights that the narrative of the ‘Hero of the Republic’ has been used as an essential cultural device propelling North Korea’s militarization from the outset of the Korean War to the present day.
