제주도 무가 속의 숫자 12에 대한 고찰 -中國 신화,무속과의 대비를 中心으로 (The Meaning of the Number 12 in Jeju's Mythology-A Comparative Study with China`s Mythology and Shamanism-)

초록

숫자는 단순히 계산하는 기호로서의 의미 외에도 특정한 공동체 내에서 사회 현상의 부호화 형식으로서 존재하기도 한다. 그것은 철학, 종교, 신화, 무술(巫術), 습속 등 여러 분야에서 하나의 필수적인 화소로서 반복적으로 나타날 때에 특별히 신비롭고 신성한 의미를 지니기도 한다.
제주도 서사무가에는 특정한 숫자가 반복해서 등장하는데 그 의미가 단순히 계산 기호의 의미에만 국한되지 않고 숫자에는 집단의식의 공동적 감정과 관념이 들어 있다. 신화 속의 이런 숫자 원형은 신화적 사고 방식과 원시적 사유의 내재적인 특징을 표현하고 있을 뿐만 아니라 옛날 사람들의 우주, 자연, 인생에 대한 깊은 사고가 구현되어 있어서 다른 민족문화를 이해할 때에도 특수한 가치를 지닌다. 그 중에서도 숫자 12는 제주도 무가에 자주 등장하는 숫자이고 독특한 의미를 지닌다.
천간지지(天干地支)중의 12지지(地支)를 바탕으로 한 12가 천문학 숫자로 나타나기 때문에 많은 문화 현상이 형성된 근거가 바로 여기에 있다. 신화는 인간세계의 삶의 역사이고, 자연세계의 형성과 변천을 말해주는 과학이다. 천상(天象)에서 오는 12는 신화의 특성이 부여되고 신성한 상징의미를 갖는다. 12는 하늘을 의미하는 숫자로서 가장 크고 가장 많으며 더 이상 넘을 수 없는 신성한 숫자를 의미한다. 무속의례에서도 집단의식의 공동적 감정과 관념이 숫자 12에 들어 있다.

영어초록

“Number is a prototype that often appears in our dreams, imageries and hallucinations, which is able to control us.” In the long process of human history and culture, numbers have been given special meanings and connotations: “In the collective representations,…numbers should be considered as mysterious presence rather than arithmetic units.” Especially when the numbers were attached to the specific appearances of objects, they could not be understood through rational understanding, thus they were often given mystical significance. So the numeral prototype is a carrier of primitive concepts and the performance of the collective unconscious. It digitalized the understanding, that has the sacred symbolism, through mythological thinking of the universe. Different numeral prototypes in national cultures contain different mystical connotations and predictive significance.
The mythological and Shamanistic beliefs of Jeju obviously have specific significance. For instance, the 3, 7, 12, 500 Generals and the Eighteen Thousand Gods cannot be simply interpreted as random and casual numeric applications. In fact, they have strict rules, specific functions and significance. The numeral prototype reflects the inherent characteristics of mythical and original thinking that also embodies the ancient's deep thinking of the universe, nature and life. It also has a special value in the understanding of national culture.
However, in the current mythological studies of Jeju, the number is only to be recorded as an element of mythical stories or witchcraft rituals. The possible specific meaning of these numbers, like the concern and analysis of the numeral prototype, still seem to be absent and lacking adequate attention.
Starting with the numeral prototype and comparing it with Chinese mythology and Shamanism, this paper reveals the universal law of the symbolic meaning and original thinking behind the number 12 in Jeju's mythology.
