문화콘텐츠 웹툰으로 재창작된 〈선녀와 나무꾼〉속 ‘사슴’의 의미와 기능 변모양상 (Transformational Aspects of the Functions of the ‘Deer’ in 〈The Fairy and the Woodcutter〉 Recreated as a Cultural Contents Webtoon)

초록

본고는 설화 〈선녀와 나무꾼〉을 매개로 한 다음(Daum) 웹툰 《바리공주》과 네이버(Naver) 웹툰 《계룡선녀전》 속 〈선녀와 나무꾼〉을 통해 설화의 문화콘텐츠로의 재창작되는 양상을 살펴보았다. 특히 기존 설화인 〈선녀와 나무꾼〉 세계관에서 ‘하늘의 뜻’을 알고, 나무꾼을 도와주는 조력자의 기능을 수행했던 ‘사슴’의 의미와 기능이 뉴미디어 ‘웹툰’이라는 새로운 콘텐츠 양식에서 재매개되면서 어떻게 변화되었는지를 고찰했다.
다음 웹툰 《바리공주》 속 〈선녀와 나무꾼〉(2019년 3월 29일~4월 26일 5화 연재)에서의 사슴은 이조참의 댁에서 죄를 짓고 쫓겨난 유모로, 이조참의 댁에 대한 원한을 갚는 역할을 수행한다. 기존설화에서의 조력자였던 사슴이 선녀의 죽음을 야기하는 존재인 것이다. 사슴의 기능이 변하면서 이 웹툰의 주제도 ‘사랑’이라는 이름하에 이루어지는 폭력을 되묻고 있다.
네이버 웹툰 《계룡선녀전》 속 ‘사슴’은 주인공인 계룡선녀, 김금과 삼각관계를 이루면서 세계와 갈등하고 교감하는 존재로 설정되었다. 또한 ‘사슴’은 불교의 인연설을 중심으로 다층 우주론의 시공간을 통해 세계와 개인의 화해라는 주제의식의 확장하는 기능을 한다.
설화는 원형성을 통해 보편적인 감동을 주는 서사로, 다층적인 세계관을 구성한다. 설화의 구조 자체가 가지는 환상성과 상상력은 이야기의 비현실적 사고를 지속하는 힘이 된다. 그러나 문화콘텐츠의 원천소스로서 설화는 현대적 이야기로 재생산되면서 설화가 창작될 당대의 인식체계가 아닌 현재의 문화적 사회적 인식 체계에서 이해할 수 있는 이야기로 새로이 변형된다. 즉 설화의 모티브가 적용되는 시대의 사회적 역사적 변화에 따라 설화의 역사적 변형이 이루어지는 데 이는 그 시대에 맞는 가치관 및 인식이 투영되기 때문이다. 이는 웹툰으로 재창조된 〈선녀와 나무꾼〉의 ‘사슴’의 의미와 기능 변화를 통해 확인된다.

영어초록

Through the 〈The Fairy and the Woodcutter〉 in the Naver webtoon <Gyeryong Seonnyeojeon> and the Daum webtoon <Princess Bari>, which use the tale of 〈The Fairy and the Woodcutter〉 as a medium, this article observed how the meaning of ‘deer’, which was a particular facilitator in the worldview of the original tale of 〈The Fairy and the Woodcutter〉 among aspects reattached as cultural contents of the tale, changed as the story was recreated as new contents in the form of modern webtoons.
The deer in 〈The Fairy and the Woodcutter〉 in the Daum webtoon <Princess Bari> (a series of 5 sessions published from March 29, 2019 to April 26, 2019) was a servant who was thrown out of the house of Jo Cham Lee after doing wrong and while it was a facilitator in the original tale, it newly appears as the contributor of murder by getting revenge for the house of Jo Cham Lee. This webtoon raises questions about violence that occurs under the name of ‘love’.
The ‘deer’ in the Naver webtoon <Gyeryong Seonnyeojeon> is in a love triangle with the protagonist Gyeryong Seonnyeo and Kim Geum and it is set as a character that conflicts and communes with the protagonist. Also, the ‘deer’ is a central role that expands the subject consciousness of reconciliation between the world and the individual through the time and space of a multi-layered cosmology centering on the views of nidana in Buddhism.
Fables are narrations that bring about universal emotion through original forms and they construct multi-leveled worldviews. The fantasy and imagination of fable structures themselves become a form of strength to maintain the unrealistic thinking of stories. However, as fables are reproduced as modern stories as the primary sources of cultural contents, they are newly transformed from stories that can be understood from awareness systems of the times in which fables are created to stories that can be understood from cultural awareness systems of the present. In other words, historical changes take place according to social and historical changes of the age in which fable motifs are applied, and this is because projections are made of values and perceptions that fit the age. This can definitely be seen through the meaning changes of ‘deer’ in 〈The Fairy and the Woodcutter〉 recreated as a webtoon.
