대하소설 속 ‘늙어감’의 양가적 측면과 성숙한 노년을 위한 마음수양 (The ambivalent aspect of "growing old" in the roman-fleuve and the cultivation of mind for mature old age)

초록

본고에서는 대하소설에 형상화된 ‘늙어감’의 양가적 측면을 토대로, 오늘날 성숙한 노년을 맞이하기 위한 바람직한 마음수양의 방안에 대해 고찰해 보았다. 우선 대하소설 속 늙어감의 양가적 측면을 정신적 능력, 대내외적 위상, 신체적 상태의 세 가지 측면에서 살펴보았다. 첫째, 정신적 능력과 관련하여 노년기에 마음이 느슨해짐에 따라 유혹에 빠지기 쉬운 유약한 면모를 보이기도 하지만, 원숙한 노년의 지혜와 포용력으로 발현되기도 하였다. 둘째, 대내외적 위상과 관련하여 과격한 성격 혹은 동일 세대의 부재로 인해 노년의 소외감과 외로움을 토로하기도 하지만, 가문의 중추적 역할 혹은 동년배와의 교류 및 봉사활동을 통해 가문‧사회의 구심점으로서의 위상을 구가하기도 하였다. 셋째, 신체적 상태와 관련하여 죽음의 문제가 부각되고 있었는데, 노년에 의지가 되는 형제 혹은 배우자 등의 죽음에 대한 지극한 슬픔의 감정을 드러내는가 하면, 죽음을 본원으로 돌아가는 것이라는 인식 하에 의연하고 담담하게 받아들이기도 하였다.
이러한 제 양상을 토대로 오늘날 성숙한 노년을 맞이하기 위한 마음수양의 방안에 대해 성찰해 보았다. 첫째, 오늘날 노인의 위상이 예전에 비해 격하되었더라도 대하소설에서처럼 노년이 주는 원숙한 경륜의 지혜는 여전히 의미가 있다는 점을 자각하고 존중받는 노인이 되기 위해 노력할 필요가 있다. 이를 위해 노년의 원숙한 지혜를 발휘하되, 실수할 수 있다는 점을 염두에 두고 다른 세대의 말을 경청하는 자세가 필요하다. 또한 청장년층도 노년층의 원숙함을 인정하면서 상생할 수 있도록 노력할 필요가 있다. 둘째, 오늘날 노인은 외로움과 소외감을 느끼기 쉬운 주변적 대상으로 치부시되는 경향이 있지만, 삶의 주체로서 한 가족과 사회의 중심추 역할을 할 수 있음을 인식할 필요가 있다. 대하소설 속의 인물들의 사례를 토대로 가족을 집결시키는 구심점으로서의 위상이 여전히 유효함을 인지하면서 온화한 태도로 가족들을 포용할 수 있도록 인격을 함양할 필요가 있으며, 가족 이외의 친구들과의 교류를 늘리고 다양한 봉사활동을 통해 많은 사람들과 소통하면서 노년에도 삶의 주체로 살아갈 수 있도록 노력해야 한다. 물론 여기에 노년층이 보다 활기차게 살아갈 수 있는 사회적 시스템까지 갖추어져 있다면 더욱 바람직할 것이다. 셋째, 대하소설에서 죽은 자에 대한 지극한 슬픔을 표출하면서 예의를 다하는 태도는 그 지나침을 경계해야겠지만 청장년층은 물론 노년층까지도 죽음을 멀리하려는 오늘날의 우리들에게 죽음을 항상 곁에 두고 성찰해야 할 대상이라는 점을 깊이 인지시켜 주고 있다. 더욱이 죽음을 본원으로 돌아가는 것이라는 인식 하에 의연히 받아들이는 대하소설 속 인물들의 태도를 교훈삼아 오늘날에도 죽음을 ‘폐생(閉生)’이 아니라 ‘완생(完生)’의 의미로 이해함으로써, 삶의 가치를 더욱 깊이 있게 되새기면서 보다 의미 있는 죽음을 맞이할 수 있는 성숙한 마음가짐이 필요하다.
이처럼, 대하소설은 '늙어감'과 관련한 양가적 측면을 섬세하게 보여줌으로써, 오늘날의 우리들에게 이상적 모델을 제시해 주기도 하고 반면교사의 역할을 하기도 한다. 특히 조선후기 독자들에게 일종의 ‘수신서’ 역할을 했던 대하소설은 여타의 장르와 달리 늙어감에 대한 이상적 측면이 인상적으로 제시하고 있는데, 관념적인 내용으로 흐르기 쉬운 교훈서와 달리 등장인물들의 구체적 일화를 통해 생동감 있게 이를 형상화하고 있기에 큰 의미가 있다. 대하소설을 통해 늙어감에 따른 ‘상실’과 ‘은총’의 양가적 측면을 겸허히 받아들이면서 끊임없는 마음수양을 통해 이를 승화시킨다면, 오늘날에도 성숙한 노년을 맞이하는 가운데 자기완성의 소중한 결실을 맺을 수 있으리라 생각한다.

영어초록

In this paper, through the ambivalent aspects of "growing old" embodied in the roman-fleuve, I have considered a desirable way to cultivate a mind to face mature old age today. First of all, the quantitative aspects of aging in the roman-fleuve were examined in three aspects: mental ability, internal and external status, and physical status. First, as the mind loosens in old age in relation to mental ability, it shows a fragile aspect that is easy to fall into temptation, but also expressed with the wisdom and tolerance of mature old age. Second, in relation to internal and external status, old men expressed the sense of alienation and loneliness of old age in the absence of the same generation, but they also enjoyed their status as the center of the family and society through exchanges and volunteer work. Third, the problem of death was being highlighted in relation to the physical condition, revealing extreme feelings of loss and sadness about the death of a brother or spouse who can rely on in old age, and accepting death resolutely and calmly under the recognition that death returns to the main house.
Based on these patterns, I considered ways to cultivate the mind to face mature old age today. First, even if the status of the elderly today has been downgraded compared to the past, it is necessary to be aware that the wisdom of mature experience given by old age is still meaningful and try to become a respected old man. To this end, it is necessary to exercise the mature wisdom of old age, but instead of dealing with things arbitrarily, it is necessary to listen to other generations. Second, although the elderly today tend to be dismissed as peripheral objects that are prone to feeling loneliness and alienation, it is necessary to recognize that they can serve as the center of a family and society as a subject of life. Recognizing that the status of family gathering is still valid based on the examples of characters in the novel, it is necessary to cultivate character to embrace the family with a gentle attitude, increase exchanges with friends other than family, communicate with many people through various volunteer activities, and live as a subject of life in old age. Of course, it would be more desirable if there is a social system in which the elderly can live more actively. Third, we should be wary of excessive courtesy while expressing extreme sorrow for the dead in the roman-fleuve, but it is necessary to deeply recognize that it is an object to reflect on death by ringing alarm bells in today's reality of avoiding death as well as the elderly. Moreover, it is necessary to have a more mature mindset to face a meaningful death by understanding death as a meaning of "complete life" rather than "quit life" by taking lessons from the characters in the roman-fleuve who accept death resolutely under the perception that it is to return to the home.
As such, in the roman-fleuve, by presenting the ambivalent aspects of "growing old", It presents an ideal model for us today and teaches us through opposite examples. the roman-fleuvel, which served as a kind of "receipt" for readers in the late Joseon Dynasty, impressively presents the ideal aspect of aging, which is very meaningful because it vividly embodies the specific anecdotes of major characters. I think that if we humbly accept the ambivalent aspects of "loss" and "grace" of aging through the novel and sublimate them through constant mind training, we will be able to bear the fruit of self-completion even in our mature old age today.
