초록

「신천지」로서의 이미지가 넘친 만주국은 제국 일본 지식인, 예술인들이 각자 유토피아를 기획한 기회의 땅이기도 했다. 그들이 폐색 상황에 있던 본토에 비해 어느 정도 자유로운 실험과 자신의 이론 적용이 가능한 장소 또는 ‘타불라 라사’로서 만주국을 인식하고 있었던 것은 틀림없다. 만주국이 정치적으로는 문제를 안고 있더라도 전위적 건축가들에게는 전시통제 하의 일본에서는 불가능한 계획을 실험할 수 있는 장으로 여겨졌던 것이다. 자유로운 실험이 가능한 만주국이라는 이미지는 당시 건축가뿐만 아니라 문예 전반의 공통된 경향이었다. 「가상국가(도시)로서의 만주국」을 마음껏 계획한 것이 건축영역이었다고 말한다면, 「파인더 속의 실험국가」를 자유자재로 모색한 것이 사진영역이었다고 할 수 있다. 특히 전위사진과 보도사진에 있어 만주는 실험실로서 적극적으로 인식되었다. 본고에서는 만주국과 일본 근대 사진과의 관계를 다루면서 「전위」와 「실험」이라는 개념에 주목해 보았다. 최근 아방가르드 연구에서는 「지정학적 전위」로서 만주국을 위치짓는 시점이 제기되고, 만주국이 예술적 전위와 정치적 전위, 쌍방에 있어 신천지였음이 밝혀져 왔다. 본고에서 본 만주사진은 그것을 단적으로 담아낸 절호의 자료이며, 다양한 전위의 입장과 시선이 교차하고 얽힌 것을 확인했다. 내지의 전위사진가와 재만일본인 전위(조형) 사진가들은 스스로의 「새로움」, 즉 「일상 속의 초현실」과 「신국가에 상응하는 첨단(=조형)」을 적용, 실험하는 장소로서 만주를 ”발견”했다. 그리고 보도사진가 또한 「조국의 최일선」이 된 「만주의 전위」에 서 그 정보를 「본대」인 일본을 향해 발신한 이른바 만주는 이중의 아방가르드였던 것이다.

영어초록

This paper focuses on Japanese　photographers in the period of 1930s and 1940s, including those who resided in　Manchuria, and analyzes their views on and activities in Manchukuo through two　conceptual frames of ‘avant-garde’ and ‘experimentation.’ Japan’s artistic and　political vanguards at the time both envisioned Manchuria to be a place where　they could realize their own desires. And in the process, Manchukuo became a “geopolitical　avant-garde” (as in the words of NAMIGATA Tsuyoshi) that spearheaded in the　nation’s war against the West, ahead of the mainland (main unit). Attitudes of Japanese　photographers against the state could also be understood in this context. Artistic　vanguards in photography were those avant-garde photographers from the mainland　Japan (naichi) who travelled to Manchuria for their work, as well as　Japanese photographers residing in Manchuria who also pursued avant-gardist expressions　through their photography of “plasticity” (zōkei shashin). There were subtle　differences in their pursuits, but they both viewed Manchukuo as a place to　spread the idea of ‘surreal in everyday life’ and experiment with ‘cutting-edge　expressions’ that befit the new state. In case of political　avant-garde, originally represented by Marxist and leftist thoughts that had　already dissipated in the wartimes, the spirit was succeeded by nationalism and　fascism. Photo　journalists who followed such political avant-garde headed to Manchukuo,“the front line of the motherland,” and assumed the role of transmitting the　latest information to the main force, to the people of Japan. However, even to　these photographers, Manchuria was not only a place for political propaganda　and communication duties, but also a place for applying and disseminating their　own photographic theories and techniques-experimenting with kumi shashin (editing or construction of　multiple photographs in order to express a story or an issue of interest) and　up-to-date methods of Russian avant-garde photography, while training amateur　photographers. In this way, in the eyes of Japanese photographers of the time, Manchukuo　was a space for various experimentations entangled with blurred purposes andborders of artistic and political avant-garde.
