In Native American Literature, words and stories have powerful healing ability. The stories heal the listeners by bringing them into the community. By hearing stories about others in situations similar to one's own, the listener becomes one with a larger group. This thesis discusses how symbols of interconnectedness and spirituality of all life manifest in Native Americans and how the healing theme is created and incorporated in Louise Erdrich's Love Medicine.
The characters in the novel struggle to find a balance between the forces of change brought by Euro-American society, while trying to maintain the integrity and power of Native American's traditional way of life. Futhermore, They heal themselves by continually trying to return to the community and by forgiving each other through hearing the stories of their own in others' voices. In this sense, not only Erdrich's Love Medicine shows the typical problems of Native American, but also gives light to the possible solutions for those problems that Native Americans face today.
