儒家의 죽음관 : 生死의 連續과 不朽의 죽음 (Confucianism's View of Death: Continuation of Life and Death and Death of Immortality)

초록

유가는 죽음이라는 자연적 필연성의 실존 문제를 도덕적 필연성의 문제로 전환시켜 놓고 있다. 삶과 죽음은 도덕적 필연성 혹은 사명이라는 관점을 통하여 연속된다. 왜냐하면 생사의 命은 비록 인력으로 바꿀 수 있는 것은 아니지만, 이런 관점은 사람들이 살아있을 때 인륜과 도덕을 온 몸으로 실천하도록 만드는 작용을 하게 만들고, 또 죽음을 맞이하여서도 도덕적 사명을 완성하는데 조금의 어떠한 주저함도 없애주기 때문이다. 여기에서 자연의 필연성은 도덕적 필연성으로 변하여 유가들로 하여금 살아있을 때의 충실함과 죽을 때의 당당함을 얻게 만들어 준다. 도덕적 생명의 불후를 추구하는 것이 유가 생사관의 핵심이지만 그들은 또한 효와 禮를 통해서도 산자와 죽은 자를 연결시킨다. 유가는 예를 통하여 死者를 삶의 영역에 남겨두고, 예를 통하여 사자와의 관계를 지속하기 때문이다. 유가가 죽음을 초월하는 생사 연속의 방식은 크게 세 가지로 나누어 말할 수 있다. 그 중 하나는 祭禮 등의 孝의 실천을 통하여 조상과 후손은 血脈을 통하여 면면히 끊어지지 않고 이어진다. 두 번째는 자신의 이름을 역사 속에 기록하는 역사적, 사회적 不朽이다. 세 번째는 개별적 생명을 우주의 대생명 속에 집어넣어 영원함을 얻는 天人合一에 있다. 이 세 가지 중 어느 하나를 이루기 위해서 필요한 것은 바로 도덕의 실천여부이다. 본 논문에서는 유가의 생사관에 대한 관점을 살펴보기 위해서, 우선 공자의 생사에 대한 태도, 晝夜 개념의 은유를 통해 생사관을 살펴보고, 죽음 현상에 대한 유가의 관점, 유가의 禮에 보이는 생사관, 불후와 죽음의 초월 등의 문제를 통하여 삶과 죽음의 문제를 분석하려고 한다.

영어초록

Confucianism shifts the existence problem of natural inevitability of death to the issue of moral inevitability. Here, life and death continues through the moral inevitability and a mission perspective. The reason is that the mandate of life and death cannot be changed by human, but this standpoint enables humanity and morality to practice with every fiber of one’s body, when people are alive, and to remove any hesitation in completing moral mission to embrace death. Here, natural inevitability changes to moral inevitability and enables Confucianists to gain faithfulness when they are alive and dignity when they die. Although, pursuing immortality of moral life is the core of Confucianism’s view of life and death, the Confucianists also connect the alive and the dead through filial piety and manners. The reason is that Confucianism leaves the dead in the domain of life, and continues relationship with the dead through manners. The ways of the continuation of life and death beyond death can be divided into three. The first way is that the ancestors and descendants are ceaselessly connected through blood relationship via the practice of filial piety including ancestral rituals. The second one is historical and social immortality recording one's own name in the history. The third one is the union of god and men through which perpetualness is gained by putting individual life into the great life of the universe. What is necessary to achieve one of the three things mentioned above is moral practice. This paper delves into the view of life and death through Confucius’ attitude on life and death and the metaphor of day and night concept to examine Confucianism's view of life and death. This study actually analyzes the issue of life and death through Confucianism’s point of view on the death, the view of life and death viewed from Confucianism’ manners, immortality and transcendence of death.
