‘錯綜’의 관점에서 본 19세기 소설 속 서사 흐름에 대한 인식 (Recognition on the Flow of Description in 19th Century Novel Seen in Viewpoint of ‘Complication’)

초록

19세기에 향유되었던 한문 산문 운용의 기법으로 간주되는 개합과 착종의 관점을 한문 장편 소설뿐만 아니라, 국문 장⋅단편소설에까지 확대하여 적용했을 때, 논의할 수 있는 여러 양상들을 살펴보았다. 한문산문에서 서사와 의론을 착종시킴으로써 서사의 생동감을 높이고 의론의 타당성이 상승한다고 인식한 것처럼, 소설 창작과 독법에서도 중심 스토리와 여러 삽화들의 결합 관계를 정서와 협서 관계 측면에서 볼 때, 협서가 서사의 변화, 굴곡을 가져오는 효과를 소설 창작과 독법에서 중요한 지점임을 인식하였다. 실제 소설 창작 측면에서도 한문 장편 소설에서 서사와 의론을 착종시켜 가까이서 개합 관계로 맺어지거나 멀리서 조응을 이루게 함으로써 서사전개에 타당성을 높였다. 소설 작품의 구성 원리를 감안할 때, 이러한 점은 비단 한문 소설뿐만 아니라, 국문소설, 더 나아가서는 단편소설에서도 발견되는 면모이기도 했다. 예컨대, 국문소설에서 의론적 성격을 지닌 글을 중간에 끼움으로써 등장인물의 언행에 타당성을 부여하고, 서사 전개에도 합리성을 부여하였다. 그리고 서사 흐름과 다소 관계없는 묘사적 서술을 길게 이음으로써 여담적 성격을 강화시키면서 서사가 굴곡지어 흘러가는 것을 노리기도 했다.
이어 이 소설 유형들 간에 서사에 대한 어떤 공통적인 인식이 깔려 있었던 것은 아닌가 하는 문제를 살펴보았다. 그래서 우화 소설, 판소리계 소설, 한문 장편소설은 그 문화적인 기반 차이에도 불구하고 향유자들에게는 서사의 일관성을 유지하여 중심 스토리를 구성하는 서사가 일관되게 흘러가는 것을 바람직하다고 보는 인식을 기본으로 하면서 서사적 일관성을 지나치게 해치지 않는 범위 내에서 이질적인 양식이 서사 흐름 속에서 자유롭게 끼어드는 것도 좋다는 인식도 갖고 있었던 것이 아닌지 추정을 해 보았다.

영어초록

When the viewpoint of concord and complication regarded as the technique of Chinese prose operation enjoyed in 19th century is applied not only to Chinese full-length novels but also expandedly to Korean full-length novels and short stories, many aspects that can be discussed were investigated.
Like in Chinese proses by complicating description and discussion, recognized is that vividness of the description is heightened and the validity of discussion is risen, in creation of novels and the way of reading, when the affined relation between main story and many episodes is seen in the aspect of relation between description and inserted description, that the effect of inserted description that brings the change of description and bend is important spot in the creation of novels and the way of reading was recognized.
In the aspect of actual creation of novel, in Chinese full-length novel, complicating description and discussion and by making them joined as concord relation closely or making them form accordance distantly, the validity in description development was heightened.
When considering composition principle of novel work, such a point is the aspect discovered not only in Chinese novels but also in Korean novels and further in short stories.
For example, in Korean novels by inserting the articles which have nature of discussion into the middle, granted was validity to speech and action of the character and granted was reasonability to description development. And by connecting lengthily descriptive statement which is somewhat irrelevant to the flow of description, strengthening digressive character and attempted for description to flow making curve.
And investigated was the problem whether some common recognition on description lies among these novel types.
Therefore, based on the recognition that fable fictions, pansori novels, Chinese full-length novels, in spite of the difference in the cultural foundation, for enjoyers, maintaining consistency of description the description that composes the main story flow consistently is desirable, assumed was that they had the recognition that within the extent that does not excessively harm the descriptive consistency, heterogeneous pattern cuts freely in the flow of description is good.
