장덕조 소설의 ‘사랑의 서사’ 연구 - 『逆流속에서』를 중심으로 - (A Study on ‘Narration of Love' in Deokjo Jang's Novel - Focused on “Amid Back Flow” -)

초록

본고는 1960년대 신문연재소설의 주요 소재는 ‘사랑’이라는 점에 천착하여, 그간 사각지대에서 외면된 장덕조의 『 逆流속에서』를 찾아 대중소설의 시의성을 바탕으로 한 ‘사랑의 서사’를 살펴보았다. 이는 근대화 과정에서 배태된 여성의 주체적 경험과 욕망, 당대의 윤리의식을 밀도 있게 모색하는 유용한 작업이라고 할 수 있다.
장덕조는 1932년 <개벽>사에 입사, 기자가 된 것을 계기로 작품을 발표하기 시작한 향토 출신의 여류작가이다. 30년대 대부분의 신문․잡지를 통해 다른 여성 작가들보다 두드러진 창작활동을 하였으며, 50∼60년대 이르러서는 대중작가로서의 위상을 확립하였다. 그러나 대중들의 충분한 공감대를 확보하였음에도 불구하고 문학사에서 누락되고 소외된 작가이다.
『 逆流속에서』는 60년 초 여성의 근대적 자각을 옹호하고 자본주의적 속물성과 봉건적 관습을 비판하고 있다. 남․녀 간 사랑의 관계를 특별한 것으로 부각하면서 60년대 불륜코드와 새로운 정체성을 찾기 위한 인물들의 섹슈얼리티가 ‘일탈적 사랑’으로 나타난다. 『 逆流속에서』의 사랑 방식의 한 형태인 ‘낭만적 사랑’은 인물들이 자신의 욕망과 현실을 정시(正視)하며 주체를 자각하는 과정으로 나아가게 된다. 장덕조 소설의 가치를 발견 할 수 있는 중요한 종착점은 ‘윤리성’의 탐구이다. 『逆流속에서』는 이러한 작가의 윤리의식이 다분히 내포되어, ‘가정’ 이데올로기를 준거 기준으로 제시한다. 가정의 이탈과 복귀라는 ‘윤리적 사랑’의 봉합은 그들의 사랑이 ‘Eros’를 초월한 ‘Philia’의 관계 형성으로 이루어질 때 진정한 사랑으로 완성된다. 이는 사회․문화․정치적 분위기가 여성의 ‘교양화’를 요구했던 60년대 연예담론과도 일치한다. 따라서『逆流속에서』는 ‘사랑의 서사’을 통해 대중문학의 미학적 속성과 더불어 근저에 작용하는 ‘윤리의식’ 및 평온하지 못한 사회의 조류에 치열하게 항거하는, 당대 ‘작가의 의식’을 조망할 수 있는 작품이라고 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

The thesis recognized that major subject matter of the serial story in a newspapaer in the 1960's was 'Love' and the researcher searched for “Amid back flow” of Deokjo Jang that had been disregarded in the state of disability at a dead zone and investigated the ‘Narration of Love' that was realized in a capitalistic period through a literary work. This discussion could be a very helpful work in finding independent experience and desire of a woman born in the process of modernization and the sense of ethics of that time in depth.
Deokjo Jang was a female writer from a rural area and started to publish her works after entering Gaebyeok in 1932 and becoming a newspaper journalist. Her creative activity was more emphasized than other female writers through most of newspaper and magazines of 1930's and her status as a popular writer was established between 1950' and 1960's. Despite the popularity, she was left out and isolated from Korean history of literature.
In “Amid back flow”, Deokjo Jang supported the modern awakening of the female in early 1960's and criticized the snobbery of capitalism and the feudal customs. While the love relationship between a man and a woman was highlighted as a special one, sexuality of characters who were seeking for a new identity was demonstrated as a ‘deviant love' along with an extramarital relationship in 1960's. One type of love types, ‘Romantic Relationship' was proceeded during a process of the self-awareness by looking at each character's desire and reality in “Amid back flow”. The important subject to find the value of a novel of Dekjo Jang is the investigation of ‘Ethics'. This ethical awareness of the writer was much implied in “Amid back flow” and ‘Domestic' ideology was represented as a standard of conformity. ‘Romantic Love' consisting of departure from home and the return could be truly completed when ‘Philia' relationship of their love is formed beyond ‘Eros'. This corresponded with the entertainment issue in the 1960's when social/ cultural/political atmosphere required the ‘refinement' of female. Therefore, “Amid back flow” shows the writer consciousness that resisted against the current of unstable society through the ‘Sense of Ethics' on the basis as well as the aesthetic attribute of popular literature in accordance with the public's preference through ‘Narration of Love'.
