초록

이 논문은 근대 의료 제도와 담론이 한국 근대소설 속 출산 장면에 미친 영향을고찰하고자 했다. 특히 소설 속 근대 산파의 등장이 여성에 대한 돌봄 인식을 어떻게 촉진했는지를 살피고자 했다. 전통적으로 임신과 출산은 여성의 고유 영역으로여겨져 자연적, 무속적 관점에서 주로 다루어졌다. 그러나 근대 의료 제도가 도입되고 전문적인 산파 자격 등이 생겨나면서 여성의 신체와 관련한 근대 의료 담론이 활발하게 형성되었다. 이는 대표적으로 동아일보의 <지상병원>이라는 의료 상담코너를 통해 확인할 수 있다. <지상병원>에서 여성들은 자신의 신체 증상을 구체적으로 기술하면서, 자신의 몸을 주체적으로 자각하고 표현할 수 있었다. 이 과정에서 여성의 임신과 출산 등은 의료적 관리와 돌봄이 요구되는 과정으로 새롭게 인식되기 시작했다.
근대 작가들은 소설 속 출산 장면을 통해 전통적 관점을 넘어선 새로운 변화와시각을 서사적으로 담아내고자 시도했다. 소설 속 여성의 출산은 단순한 생리적 과정에 그치지 않고, 극복해야 할 시련이나 수난으로 묘사되며 서사의 긴장감을 고조시키거나 중요한 전환점으로 기능했다. 특히 임신과 출산 과정에서 근대적 의료와돌봄의 혜택을 경험한 여성 인물은 이 과정에서 주체적 자각이나 각성 등이 이루어지기도 했다. 이처럼 소설 속 여성의 출산은 그들의 주체적 성장과 변화를 촉진하는 계기가 되었다. 근대 작가들은 산파나 여의사와 같은 의료 전문가를 등장시켜근대 의료 담론을 작품에 반영하고, 여성의 출산에서의 의료적 관리와 돌봄의 필요성을 강조하였다.
이광수의 『그 여자의 일생』, 이태준의 『성모』, 심훈의 『직녀성』은 근대 산파가 등장하여 출산 과정에서의 의료적 관리와 돌봄의 필요성을 잘 보여주는 작품들이다. 나아가 이들 작품은 여성의 재생산과 관련한 권리를 암시하는 주제를 전달한다. 근대소설 속 여성의 출산은 자연적, 생리적인 여성의 경험을 다루는 것이 아닌 당시 의료 제도 및 담론과 관련한 사회적 변화 및 의식 전환의 필요성 등을 드러낸다. 이를 통해 여성들은 주체적으로 자신의 몸과 삶을 바라보게 되는 계기가되었으며 이는 중요한 문학적 흐름을 형성하였다.

This study examines how the introduction of modern medical systems and discourses transformed perceptions of pregnancy, childbirth, and care for women, focusing on modern Korean novels. Traditionally viewed through natural, domestic, and shamanistic lenses, pregnancy and childbirth became recognized as processes requiring medical management with the enactment of the Midwife Regulations and the establishment of the Midwife Nursing Training Center. The Dong-A Ilbo’s “hospital on the papers” section highlighted this shift, allowing women to articulate their physical symptoms and supplement their understanding of modern medicine while promoting the spread of medical discourse.
Modern writers attempted to narratively capture new changes and perspectives beyond the traditional perspective through the scenes of childbirth in their novels. In the novels, women's childbirth is not just a simple physiological process, but is depicted as an ordeal or tribulation that must be overcome, heightening the tension of the narrative or serving as an important turning point. In particular, female characters who experienced the benefits of modern medical care and care during the process of pregnancy and childbirth sometimes experienced self-awareness or awakening during this process. In this way, women's childbirth in the novel became an opportunity to promote their independent growth and change.

This provided an opportunity for women to look at their bodies and lives in a more independent way, and formed an important literary trend.
