『토지』속의 만주, 삭제된 역사에 대한 징후적 독법 (Dunbei in “TOJI,” the Symptomatic Reading Regarding Dark Area in History)

초록

이 논문에서는 중국을 배경으로 전개되는 『토지』의 서사를 그 중심 대상으로 하여, 체험의 한계와 리얼리티의 문제를 작가가 어떻게 극복하고 있는가, 만주 지역의 한국인 이주 및 독립운동사에 대한 역사와 문학의 간극과 접점이 무엇인가를 공간, 인물, 역사의 부분으로 나누어 살펴보았다.
『토지』는 공간묘사나 인물설정 및 구체적인 역사적 사건의 재현 면에서 20세기 전반 재만 조선인에 대한 기록과 일정한 거리가 있는데, 이것은 작가의 특별한 서술의도에 의한 삭제 내지 왜곡이라 판단된다. 그 서술 의도는 만주에 대한 고토회복 의지, 만주지역 독립운동가들에 대한 역사적 정통성 부여, 우리 민족의 정신적 원류의 발견이라 할 수 있다. 한편 기록된 역사와 거리가 있는 이례적 인물들을 창조하여 삭제된 역사를 생생하게 복원하고 있지만, 거시사적 맥락에서 창조한 만주의 독립운동가의 형상화에서는 실패하고 있다. 작가는 만주국 건국 이후 중국과 공동전선이 실패하게 된 역사를 강조하면서도, 중국인을 거의 창조하지 않음으로써 대립과 교유의 가능성을 차단하고 있다. 대신 만보산 사건에 대한 일본 지식인들의 반성을 굳이 삽입하고 있는데, 이것은 중국에 대한 배신감과 죄책감, 우호와 비판이 뒤섞인 복잡한 의식의 반영이라 볼 수 있다.
어쨌든 『토지』는 기록된 역사에 대한 충실한 재현이 아니라, 역사의 징후들을 서사적 개연성으로 얽어내어 역사적 기표에 대한 기의의 무한번식을 허용하는 새로운 역사 읽기의 방식을 보이고 있다. 즉 기록된 역사를 선택하고 재구성하는 것이 아니라, 역사가 어떻게 체험되고 인식되는가를 탐색하는 데 초점이 가 있다. 그리고 『토지』는 그 역사의 의미를 생명의 공존에 대한 반성적 인식에서 찾아야 한다는 방향을 향하고 있다.

영어초록

This dissertation focuses the description of “TOJI” that develops based on China. Therefore, it analyzes about the description into the space, character and its history. Through this work, I intended to search how the author evaluates about the history of Dunbei area under colony of Japan. In detail, it is aimed to examine that how the author overcomes the limitation of experience and the problem of reality, and the difference & contact point between historical record and cultural appearance.
“TOJI” differentiated regarding 20th century of Chosun people in Dunbei, in terms of description of space or characters & representation of specific historical event. This is recognized as deletion or distortion of the history driven from author’s special descriptive purpose. The descriptive purpose can be the rehabilitation of old territory about Dunbei, endowment of historical legitimacy about patriots martyr for national independence, and discovery about our national spiritual origin. In addition, it freshly revived the dark area in history by creating the unique characters that are difference from the historical records. However, the work failed to achieve the characterization of patriots martyr for national independence of Dunbei who is faithfully created in terms of historical connections.
“Betrayal, regrets regarding China, and author’s complicated mind which the preference and criticism is mixed can be found in “TOJI”. It emphasizes about the history which failed to cooperate between Chosun & China, on the other hand, it doesn't represents about the specific criticism or betrayal to those Chinese. In addition, it interrupted the possibility of conflict & exchanges between them by not creating Chinese within the work. Instead, author specially entered the Japanese elites who lived in China, for making Japanese to regret about their barbarism.
“TOJI”is not the truthful reappearance about the historical record, but is the work consists of narrative connection between historical symptoms. Therefore, it represents the new type of historical reading that infinitely produces the historical signifie regarding signifiant. That is, not to select or restructure the historical records, but to search how the history is being experienced and recognized. In addition, “TOJI” aimed to search its historical meaning within the reflective recognition regarding coexistence of life.
