초록

본 논문에서는 경판 37장본 <전우치전>에 나타나는 ‘구원받는 약자’ 형상에주목하여 이들이 지니는 결함과 그 의미를 고찰하여 보았다.
<전우치전>에는 정도의 차이가 있기는 하지만 ‘결함’ 있는 인물들이 고난을겪다가 전우치의 도술로 구제되는 경우가 종종 발견된다. 7단락의 ‘이가’는 왕가의 부인 즉 유부녀와 사통하는 죄를 저지른 인물로, 그에게는 명백한 윤리적‘결함’이 있었다. 10단락의 ‘장계창’은 회계 장부를 잘못 작성해 국고의 손해를 초래한 인물로, 실수라고는 하나 그의 죄 역시 분명 ‘결함’이었다. 11단락의 ‘한재경’은 물욕에 눈이 멀어 전우치가 준 족자 속 창고를 자신의 것으로 여기다그 실제 주인인 관가에 잡혀 간 인물로, 그에게는 과도한 욕심이라는 ‘결함’이있었다. 이처럼 <전우치전> 속 ‘구원받는 약자’는 그저 선하기만 하고, 아무런흠결 없는 사람들이 아니었다. 한편 이들은 전우치의 도술로 구원되었지만, 그‘결함’은 해소되지 않은 채 그대로 남았다. ‘이가’·‘장계창’·‘한ᄌᆡ경’이 처한 죽을 위기의 부당함, 신비하고 초월적인 도술이 동반되는 전우치의 구원 행위에서사의 초점이 맞추어지면서, 그들의 죄나 흠은 수면 아래로 가라앉고 만 것이다.
이 서사의 의미는 다음과 같다. 우선 작품 내적으로 보면, ‘구원받는 약자’들의 처지나 결함이 주인공 전우치의 그것과 직간접적으로 통한다. 전우치는 민중적 성격을 지닌 불완전한 주인공으로, 그 자신부터가 약자들의 사정에 민감하며, 선/악 구도만으로 단정 짓기 어려운 인물이다. 결함의 설정은 주인공에서부터 부수적인 인물에 이르기까지 작품이 인물을 보다 역동적으로 형상화하는 하나의 방식이자, 작품 전반에 흐르는 독특한 미감을 조성하는 요인이 된다. 다음, 작품 외적인 의미는 독자의 비판적 인식과 관련된다. ‘구원받는 약자’ 들이 겪는 위기는 대부분 국가 또는 관리의 무능이나 횡포에서 비롯되며, 이는‘구원받는 약자’들이 지니는 결함보다 훨씬 중요하게 다루어진다. 주인공 전우치가 도술로 이들을 구원하는 행위가 이러한 문제를 근본적으로 해결하는 역할을 하는 것은 아니나, 독자들에게는 적어도 해당 문제를 비판적으로 인식하는 계기가 된다. 이때 결함의 설정은 ‘구원받는 약자’로서의 백성에 대한 독자의 동질감 형성에 기여하면서 해당 문제를 누구에게나 일어날 수 있는, 그래서더욱 중요한 일상의 문제로 바라보게 한다.
경판 37장본 <전우치전>이 성취한 ‘구원받는 약자’의 입체적인 형상화는 이처럼 나름의 유의미한 서사 전략이었으나 후대로 가면서 점차 그 성격이 변모하였다. 경판 22장본, 17장본으로 가면서는 흥미 본위의 도술담에 밀려 백성 구원의 서사 자체가 소략하게 다루어지게 되었으며, 활자본인 신문관본 및 그 독서 경험에 근거한 20세기의 한 설화에 이르러서는 주인공 전우치의 ‘선한’ 민중 영웅적 성격이 강화됨에 따라 ‘구원받는 약자’ 형상은 상대적으로 단순화되었다.

영어초록

This paper focuses on the "Weak Man Saved" features in the Gyeongpan 37-leaf-version Jeon Woochi-jeon and examines their meaning and flaws. Although there are differences in the degree of defects, it is often found that negative characters, after suffering hardships, are saved by Jeon Woochi's Taoist magic after suffering hardships. In the seventh paragraph, Mr. Lee commits adultery with Wang's wife; he thus had a clear ethical defect. Jang Gyechang, who appears in the tenth paragraph, causes damages to national property by incorrectly filling the accounting books; although this was a mistake, his crime was a clear flaw. In the eleventh paragraph, Han Jaekyung is blinded by greed and claim that the warehouse drawn in the magic scroll given by Jeon Woochi is his own; his defect is thus excessive greed. The "Weak Man Saved" in Jeon Woochi-jeon are not nice and flawless. Although they were saved by Jeon Woochi's Taoist magic, their "defects" remained.
Their sins or faults are hidden when the narrative is focused on the fact that the deaths of Mr. Lee, Jang Gyechang, and Han Jaekyung were unjust and the rescue was due to mysterious and transcendent Taoist magic.
The meaning of this narrative is as follows. First, the situation or defects of the "Weak Man Saved" directly or indirectly connectwith those of the main character Jeon Woochi. Jeon Woochi is an incomplete protagonist but a popular character; he is a person who is sensitive to the difficulties of the weak, and it is difficult to conclude by good/evil alone. The defects are way to more dynamically shape characters, from the protagonist to the extras. They create a unique aesthetic that flows throughout the work. The following extrinsic meaning relates to the reader's critical perception. Most of the crises faced by the underprivileged stem from the incompetence or tyranny of the state or management, which is treated as far more important than the defects of the underprivileged. The main character Jeon Woochi's act of saving the weak with magic does not play a fundamental role in solving social problem, but it serves as an opportunity for readers to recognize the problems critically. Moreover, the setting of the defects contributes to the formation of a sense of homogeneity with the people who are saved, while viewing the problem as a more important everyday issue that can happen to anyone. The stereoscopic representation of the "Weak Man Saved" achieved by the Gyungpan 37-leaf-version Jeon Woochi-jeon was a meaningful narrative strategy, but the character gradually changed as it progressed. The Gyungpan 22-leaf-version and 17-leafversion were increasingly dependent on the interesting story of Taoist magic and summarized the story of saving the people. In the printed version of Jeon Woochi-jeon and one narrative of the twentieth century, as Jeon Woochi's public heroism increased, the "Weak Man Saved" was relatively simplified.
