영웅소설 속 찬탈화소의 구성 방식과 존재 양태 (The method of composition and the existential aspectof the motif of usurpation of heroic novels)

초록

이 논문은 영웅소설의 화소가 장르적 규범을 유지하면서도 개성적 양상을 드러내고 있음을 살피기 위해 <조웅전>, <남정팔난기>, <장경전>, <황운전>에 등장하는 찬탈화소를 검토하였다. 찬탈화소란 적대자가 황위를 찬탈함으로써 벌어지는 일련의 서사 전개 양상을 말한다. 논의의 방향은 크게 두 가지이다. 먼저 구성방식을 검토하였다. 영웅소설의 찬탈화소는 역사적 사건, 또는 역사적 사건을 다룬 전대의 문학적 관습에 연원을 두고 있지만, 철저하게 장르적 지평 속에 녹아들었다. 그리하여 찬탈의 역사철학적 맥락은 소거되거나 축소되고, 대신 서사적 기능, 즉 ‘위기의 심화’에 방점이 찍혀 있다. 위기의 핵심은 ‘적대자=천자’라는 설정에 있다. 이에 따라 주인공은 폐제를 구출함으로써 명분을 확보하고, 세력을 끌어 모아 적대자의 세력과 대결을 벌여 승리함으로써 위기를 극복하게 된다. 요컨대 영웅소설 속 찬탈화소는 필연적으로 적대자의 황위 찬탈-주인공의 폐제 구출-주인공과 적대자의 세력 대결로 구성된다.
다음으로 세 작품에 나타난 찬탈화소의 존재 양태를 구체적으로 살폈다. <조웅전>의 경우, 찬탈화소는 적대자와 주인공의 격차를 극단적으로 벌려놓은 수단으로 활용되었다. 이를 통해 영웅이 단계적으로 성장하면서 그 간극을 좁혀가는 과정을 구체적으로 흥미롭게 보여주고 있다. <남정팔난기>의 찬탈화소는 황극과 그의 동료들이 기존의 권력 체계를 극복하고 새로이 권력의 헤게모니를 차지할 수 있는 명분과 권위를 얻기 위해 발생한다. 특히 전쟁 영웅들의 활약상을 긴박하고 핍진하게 묘사함으로써 결과적으로 황극의 영웅적 면모를 더욱 확대하고 있다. 한편, <황운전>의 찬탈화소는 권력의 최상위에 위치한 황운ㆍ설연과 이를 시기하는 황족 사이의 대립 구도를 다루는 후반부에 등장한다. 여기에서 작가는 황족의 찬탈과 조씨 고아를 수용한 폐제 구출 과정을 삽입함으로써 적대자의 패륜성을 강조하는 동시에 황운의 명분과 권위를 더 확고하게 만들고 있다.

영어초록

In order to examine that the motifs of heroic novels would reveal the individual aspect by maintaining the norms of genre, this thesis reviewed the motif of usurpation shown in <Chowoong- Jeon>, <Nam Jeong’s Eight Adversities>, <Janggyung-Jeon>, and <Hwangun-Jeon>. The motif of usurpation means a series of narrative development aspect happened when an antagonist usurps the imperial throne. The direction of discussion could be largely divided into two kinds. First, the method of composition was reviewed. Even though the motif of usurpation in heroic novels was originated from a historical event or the literary custom of the previous generation handling a historical event, it was completely merged into the prospect of genre. Therefore, the historical/ philosophical context of usurpation is erased or reduced while putting emphasis on the ‘intensification of crisis’ as a narrative function. The core of the crisis is based on the ‘antagonist=son of Heaven’. Therefore, after securing a cause by saving the dethroned emperor, the main character overcomes the crisis by gathering the power and then winning the fight with the antagonist’s force. In short, the motif of usurpation in heroic novels is inevitably composed of an antagonist’s usurpation, the main character’s rescue of the dethroned emperor, and the fight between the main character and antagonist.
Next, the existential aspect of the motif of usurpation shown in those three works was concretely examined. In case of <Chowoong- Jeon>, the motif of usurpation was used as a means to extremely broaden the gap between the antagonist and main character. Through this, the process of narrowing this gap is concretely and interestingly shown as the hero is growing in phases. The motif of usurpation in <Nam Jeong’s Eight Adversities> occurs in order for Hwanggeuk and his colleagues to obtain a cause and authority to overcome the existing power system and then to newly seize the hegemony of power. Especially, by urgently and vividly describing the war heroes’ performances, eventually, Hwanggeuk’s heroic aspect is expanded more. Meanwhile, the motif of usurpation in <Hwangun-Jeon> is shown in the latter half dealing with the conflict composition between Hwangun/Seolyeon in the top-level of power and the imperial family who is jealous of it. Here, the author solidifies Hwangun’s cause and authority by inserting the process of saving the dethroned emperor who accepted the imperial family’s usurpation and Zhao’s orphan.
