한국 웹소설 속 중국 혐오에 대한 통시적 연구 (A Diachronic Study on the Sinophobia in Korean Web Novel)

초록

Web novel is one of the most influential literary activity in recent years. However, China and Chinese characters depicted in web novels are often treated negatively. This paper analyzed the sinophobia in Korean web novels in four stages.
(1) Before web novels (~2012) Sinophobia appeared secondary and fragmented.
(2) Korean Wave boom (2013~2016) Hatered toward China and Chinese was based on contempt, ridicule, and superiority over inferior China. China was an opponent that the main character could easily overcome and destroy.
(3) Early Stage of Conflict (2016~2019) Due to the THAAD deployment and China's economic retaliation, Korea-China relations in real world have changed, and the main characters in the web novel have tried to stand aloof from China's economic charm. They were still able to overcome such limitations through their personal ability and charm.
(3) Latter Stage of Conflict (2016~2019) Now China's threat has reached a point where it can no longer be casually suppressed or overcome with main character’s individual power. China has now become an absolute evil that threatens the very principle of democracy and free trade by which Korea lives.
Web novels use hatred and sinophobia to reverse perpetrators and victims, and conveniently redefine good and evil, so that Korean readers can overcome their anxiety and imagine a soothing world where China is no longer a threat.
