초록

본 연구의 목적은 디지털 영화기술의 발전과 한국 현대사 영화의 스펙터클한 군중 이미지 사이의 역학을 살펴보는 것이다. 현대사 영화의 군중 재현에 작동하는 메커니즘을 살펴보는 것은 해석과 표상의 의미를 파악하는 것만큼 중요한 일이다. 그런데도 불구하고 현대사 영화에 관한기존의 연구는 대부분 역사적 과거에 대한 기억과 재현의 문제에 집중됐다. <꽃잎>에서 <화려한 휴가>를 거쳐 <택시운전사>, <1987>에 이르는동안 한국영화는 산업적, 기술적으로 크게 성장하고 변화했다. 따라서대중영화가 보여주는 역사적 사건의 재현과 특징을 탐구하기 위해서는산업적 맥락을 함께 고려해야 한다. 이를 위해 한국 현대사 영화에서 군중 이미지가 어떻게 변화해 왔는지 그 추이를 살펴본다. 대규모의 군중장면은 영화산업의 성공을 과시하는 산업적 징후이다. 디지털 기술이 고도화되기 전까지는 수천 명의 엑스트라 동원이 블록버스터 영화의 필수조건이었다. 2000년대 이전에는 단순한 배경이나 미장센 요소였던 군중이, 디지털 영화 기술의 발전과 함께 점차 영화의 스펙터클을 담당하는주요 요소로 부상했음을 파악할 수 있다. <택시운전사>와 <1987>의 텍스트 분석을 통해 군중의 스펙터클은 작품의 질서를 조직하고 주도적인역할을 하는 영화의 지배소가 된다는 것을 짚는다.
결론적으로 본 연구는 할리우드 에픽영화에서 고대 로마가 기술이 전시되는 특권적인 장소가 된 것처럼, 한국 현대사 영화가 디지털 기술과제작 규모의 과시를 의미하는 군중의 스펙터클을 통해 관객들을 매료시키는 데 효과적인 장르로 선택되었다고 주장한다. 스펙터클한 군중의 이미지가 반드시 현대사 영화에서만 가능한 것은 아니다. 하지만 최근의한국 현대사 영화에서 군중의 이미지가 스펙터클로 두드러지는 것은 고도화된 디지털 기술과 거기에 부합하는 미학적 요구에서 비롯된 것이다.이는 단순히 기술적 진보를 넘어, 대중에게 어필하기 위한 스펙터클 영화 제작이라는 산업적 욕망이 현대사 영화 속 군중으로 나타나는 사례라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the dynamics between the development of digital cinematographic technologies and the spectacular crowd images in Korean modern history films. Examining the mechanisms at work in the representation of crowds in contemporary Korean modern history films is as important as grasping the meaning of interpretation and representation. Nevertheless, most existing studies on Korean modern history film have focused on issues of memory and representation of the historical past. From A Petal to May 18 to A Taxi Driver to 1987: When the Day Comes, Korean cinema has undergone significant industrial and technological growth and change. Therefore, in order to explore the representation and characterization of historical events in popular cinema, it is necessary to consider the industrial context. To this end, we examine how the image of the crowd has changed in contemporary Korean modern history films.
Massive crowd scenes are a hallmark of the film industry's success. Before the advent of digital technology, the mobilization of thousands of extras was a prerequisite for blockbuster films. We can see that crowds, which were simply background or mise-en-scene elements before the 2000s, have gradually emerged as a major element responsible for cinematic spectacle with the development of digital film technology. Through the textual analysis of A Taxi Driver and 1987: When the Day Comes, it is shown that the spectacle of the crowd becomes a cinematic dominant element that organizes the order of the work and plays a leading role.
In conclusion, this study argues that just as ancient Rome became a privileged site for the display of technology in Hollywood epic films, Korean modern history films have chosen the crowd spectacle as an effective genre to fascinate audiences through the display of digital technology and production scale. The spectacular image of the crowd is not necessarily unique to Korean modern history film. However, the prominence of the spectacle of the crowd in recent Korean modern history film is a result of advanced digital technology and its aesthetic demands. This is not just a case of technological advancement, but of the industrial desire to produce spectacle films to appeal to the masses, which is manifested in the crowds in modern historical films.
