<칠성풀이> 속 신의 개입 양상과 그 의미 (The Meaning of Divine Intervention in )

초록

신화 속 갈등 양상이 가부장제 속 가정의 문제와 닮아있다는 점에 기반하여 지금까지 <칠성풀이> 연구는 가정문제를 중심으로 이루어져 왔다. 그런데 <칠성풀이> 속 가정의 시련과 극복의 주요한 순간에는 모두 신이 개입하여 그 향방을 결정한다. 이러한 신의 개입 양상은 <칠성풀이>가 갖는 특징적인 지점이며 가족 내 갈등 극복의 주요한 요소임에도 불구하고 이에 대한 주목이 이루어지지 않았다. 이에 본고에서는 가정문제에의 신의 개입 양상을 구체적으로 살펴보고, 그 의미를 무속신화의 맥락에서 고찰하였다.
<칠성풀이>에서 신의 개입은 두 차례 나타난다. 첫 번째 개입인 매화부인의 유기 시도는 매화부인의 수난에 주목하여 가부장제의 횡포를 드러내어 비판하는 서사로서 논의되어 왔다. 그런데 해당 서사를 칠 형제를 중심에 두고 본다면, 첫 번째 신의 개입은 부모가 잘못된 판단․행동을 하여 발생한 위기로부터 아이들을 구하는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 두 번째 개입은 옥녀부인의 징치이다. 옥녀부인의 간계를 알아채고도 칠성님이 이를 방관하고, 끝내 칠형제의 요청에 따라 옥녀부인의 징치가 이루어지며, 그 후에 옥녀부인은 사회와 가정 내에서도 징벌된다. 신은 가정의 질서가 제대로 기능하지 않을 때 또한 개입하여 아이들을 수호하는 것이다.
이러한 신의 개입을 통해 칠 형제는 무사히 성장하여 칠성신으로 좌정한다. 신의 개입 서사는 초월적 존재의 수호를 통해 무사히 성장하여 입신양명한 존재가 칠성신으로 좌정하였음을 보여줌으로써 아이의 수명장수와 입신양명의 기원 대상인 칠성신의 위력을 보이는 효과를 갖는다. 그런데 <칠성풀이> 속 신의 개입은 신과 인간의 관계 맺음이 선행하지 않고, 정성 없이 이루어진다는 점에서 여타 무속 신화 속 신과 인간의 관계와는 다른 양상을 갖는다. 지금까지 연구에서 무속의 신은 윤리적 판단보다는 관계 중심적이라는 특징을 가지며, 특히나 <칠성풀이>가 전승되는 호남의 무가는 신성성이 약하며 현세주의적 성격이 강하다고 논의되어왔다. <칠성풀이> 속 신의 개입 양상 속 가정질서를 통해 무속의 가치관을 다시 살펴볼 수 있었으며 이러한 논의를 토대로 호남무가의 특징 또한 재고할 수 있었다.

영어초록

Based on the observation that the patterns of conflict in mythology resemble issues within patriarchal family structures, research on <Chilseongpuri> has primarily focused on familial issues. However, at critical moments of family trials and overcoming in <Chilseongpuri>, divine intervention decisively shapes the outcomes. Despite being a distinctive feature of <Chilseongpuri> and a key element in resolving family conflicts, this aspect of divine intervention has not received due attention. This paper specifically examines the patterns of divine intervention in family issues and explores their meaning within the context of shamanistic mythology.
In <Chilseongpuri>, there are two instances of divine intervention. The first, the attempted abandonment by Maehwa Lady, has been discussed as a narrative that critiques the tyranny of patriarchy by focusing on Maehwa Lady's suffering. Viewing this narrative not as 'joint suicide' but as 'filicide followed by suicide,' it represents a life-threatening crisis for the seven brothers. From this perspective, the first divine intervention can be seen as saving the children from a crisis caused by the parents' poor decisions and actions. The second intervention is the punishment of Oknyeo Lady. Despite recognizing Oknyeo Lady’s schemes, Chilseong permits them until, ultimately, at the brothers' request, Oknyeo Lady is punished and subsequently sanctioned both socially and within the family. The divine intervention thus also protects the children when the family order centered around the patriarch fails to function properly.
Through such divine interventions, the seven brothers safely grow up and ascend as Chilseong gods. This narrative shows the effects of transcendent protection allowing for safe growth and ascension, thereby demonstrating the power of Chilseong gods, who are worshipped for their ability to grant long life and success. However, divine intervention in <Chilseongpuri> differs from other shamanistic myths in that it occurs without prior relational engagement and sincerity between the divine and humans. Previous research has characterized the gods of shamanism as relationship-centric rather than ethically judgmental, and especially in the Jeonbuk region where <Chilseongpuri> is transmitted, the local shamanism exhibits a strong worldly focus. Nevertheless, through the patterns of divine intervention in <Chilseongpuri>, this study examines the significance of family order within shamanistic ethics and reevaluates the characteristics of the Jeonbuk region's shamanistic practices based on these discussions
