신소설 속 인천 항구의 공간 표상 (The Space Representation of Port of Incheon in Sinsoseol)

초록

근대 도시 인천의 문학적 표상은 문학의 로컬리티(locality)와 심상지리(imagined geographies)에 대한 관심의 일환으로 꾸준히 연구되고 있다. 근대소설 속 인천의 공간 표상에 관해서도 개항장과 경인선이라는 두 랜드마크를 중심으로 이를 구명하는 작업이 이루어져 왔다. 대체로 1930년대 이후의 소설 작품에 논의가 집중되고 있으며, 신소설에 관한 논의는 미미한 상황이다.
신소설에 인천이 어떻게 표상되고 있는지를 다각적으로 고찰하려면 창작 신소설뿐만 아니라 번안 신소설로 그 외연을 확장할 필요가 있다. 단순한 번역소설과 달리 당시의 사회상을 일정 정도 반영하는 번안소설을 통해 인천의 다양한 면모를 발견할 수 있기 때문이다.
이 연구는 한국학중앙연구원에서 구축한 신소설코퍼스를 활용하여 분석 텍스트를 마련하였다. 신소설코퍼스에서 인천 지명 정보를 검색한 후, 이 가운데 인천이 단순한 배경을 넘어 소설의 사건 전개에 밀접하게 관련된 작품을 선택하였다. 민준호의 『행락도』, 박이양의 『명월정』, 선우일의 『두견성』, 이해조의 『모란병』 등이 그러하다. 여기에 신소설코퍼스에 포함되지 않은 작품들, 즉 박철혼의 『월미도』와 최찬식의 『해안』을 추가하여 분석하였다.
인천은 개항 이전에 망망한 해변에 갈대만 가득하던 작은 어촌에 지나지 않던 곳이었지만, ‘도성의 인후(咽喉)’라는 지정학적 특성으로 인해 제국주의 열강의 각축장이 되었다. 이 연구는 신소설 속 인천 항구를 중심으로 하여 인천의 공간 표상을 살펴보았다. 소설의 공간은 인물과 밀접한 관련을 지니고 있기에, 이 연구는 신소설 속 다양한 인물 군상을 통해 개항장으로서의 인천의 면모에 초점을 두었다. 20세기 전후 인천은 지정학적 특성 때문에 역동적인 공간으로 도약했다. 인천에는 유학생, 망명 정객, 노동자, 수적, 군인(이국 병사), 환자, 상인, 인신매매된 여성 등등이 자리하고 있었다.
전근대와 근대가 혼효하던 시기 인천 지역에는 수적이 난립하고, 이들에 의해 인신매매가 자행되었다. 신소설 『명월정』, 『모란병』, 그리고 『행락도』 등에는 수적의 활동상이 담겨져 있다. 수적들은 남성과 여성을 구별하지 않고 매매했다. 여성은 주로 인천 지역의 술집에 매매되었고, 남성은 강제 노역의 대상이 되거나 중국에 팔아넘겨졌다. 이 같은 범죄 행위는 부정부패한 관료들에 의해 묵인되었다.
신소설 『두견성』에서 군인과 상인은 러일전쟁 동안 부를 축적하는 데 몰두한다. 상인들은 러일전쟁의 배후 기지인 인천항에서 군수 물자를 조달함으로써 부를 획득하려 한다. 군인과 민간인은 재산 증식을 위해 러일전쟁을 이용했다.
신소설 『해안』에는 현재 인천여상 자리에 위치한 일본공원이 주요 장소로 등장한다. 일본공원은 일본 제국의 정체성을 조선에 이식하려는 의도 하에 조성되었다. 이 소설에서 이러한 정치적 의도는 은폐되어 있다. 이 소설의 인물들은 자동차 유람과 공원 산책을 위한 일상 공간으로 수용한다. 일본공원은 일본 제국의 공간이지만, 그들은 그것을 망각한다. 일제는 일본공원이라는 공간의 생산을 통해 일본 제국의 통치 질서를 조선에 이식하고자 하지만, 이러한 일본의 전략에 대한 비판적 시선은 소설 『해안』에서 발견되지 않는다. 요컨대, 신소설 속 인천은 자본주의의 거센 파고 속에서 다양한 인간 군상들의 욕망, 보다 정확하게는 물욕이 비등하는 공간으로 표상된다.

영어초록

The study on literary representation of Incheon as a modern city consistently become an object of attention as a locality of literature and imagined geographies. The study on the space representation of Incheon in modern novel is centered around two landmarks of an open port and Gyeongin railroad line. Generally, the discussions focus on the novel since the 1930s, the discussions on sinsoseol are yet insignificant.
If we think of a variety of ways how Incheon is represented in sinsoseol, we must study on not only a creative sinsoseol but also an adapted sinsoseol. Because the social situation of its time is reflected in an adapted story, we can find the diverse features of Incheon in an adapted story.
This study makes use of the sinsoseol corpus that The Academy of Korean Studies construct. After we search Incheon geographic names information in the sinsoseol corpus, we select the novels that are closely bound up with development of story, not as a simple background. The examples of such novels are Hangrakdo(行樂圖), Myeongwoljeong(明月亭), Dugyeonseong(杜鵑聲), and Moranbyeong(牡丹屛). And we add to Wolmido(月尾島) and Seaside(海岸) that are not contained within the sinsoseol corpus.
Incheon was a little fishing village that was full of reeds in a vast beach before the opening of its port, but became the arena of the struggle among powers of imperialism because of geopolitical characteristics as the throat of a capital city. This study shows the space representation of port of Incheon in sinsoseol. Because the space in a novel is closely connected with a character, this study is focusing on the aspect of Incheon as a open port through various characters in sinsoseol. Around the 20th century, Incheon jumped into a dynamic position because of geopolitical factors. Students, political exiles, laborers, pirates, soldiers(foreign soldiers), patients, merchants, and trafficked women stayed in Incheon.
In the mixed time of pre-modernity and modernity, there are pirates all over in Incheon, and they committed human trafficking without hesitation. The activities of pirates are contained in Myeongwoljeong, Moranbyeong, and Hangrakdo. Pirates trafficked women and men indiscriminately. Women are trafficked at a bar in Incheon area, men are hunted for forced labor and are sold in China. These criminal acts are tolerated by spoiled officials.
In a sinsoseol Dugyeonseong, soldiers and merchants immerse themselves in accumulating wealth during the Russo-Japanese War. Merchants try to acquire wealth by procuring war supplies in port of Incheon as the behind base of the Russo-Japanese War. Soldiers and civilians use the Russo-Japanese War to seek their fortunes.
Japanese Park(or Incheon Park) appears as a main place in sinsoseol Seaside. Japanese Park is situated at the site of Incheon girls' vocational high school. Japanese Park was made to transplant the identity of Japanese Empire in Joseon. This political intention is hidden in this novel. Characters in this novel accept Japanese Park as the everyday living space to go sightseeing by a car and to take for a walk in the park. Japanese Park is the space imitating the culture of Japanese Empire, but they have forgotten that. Japanese Empire try to establish ruling order in Joseon by the production of the colonial space as Japanese Park, but a critical eye upon this Japan's strategy is not found in a novel Seaside. In the final, Incheon in a sinsoseol is represented as a boiling space of worldly desires in a fierce wave of capitalism.
