초록

This paper aims to show aspects of Jungian individuation process in Grimms’ fairy tales focusing on Little Red Riding Hood, The Sleeping Beauty, and Hansel and Gretel. In terms of Jung’s concept, characteristics of these three fairy tales are the representations of unknown psychic factors that belong to the collective unconscious: Heroines in three fairy tales depict the personifications of female ego, wolf in Little Red Riding Hood, and 13th wicked fairy in The Sleeping Beauty represent the psychic shadow aspects within; and flowers in wood, forbidden room in castle and sweet cakes on the roof are the symbols of psychic energy, libido. From the standpoint of Jungian depth psychology, these three fairy tales, describe analogies between the characters of the fairy tale and phases of individuation process: Little Red Riding Hood as an analogy of the individual problem of the integration of the shadow; The Sleeping Beauty as the metaphor of the challenges of anima and animus in collective unconscious; Hansel and Gretel’ as the representation of ego separated from the negative aspect of mother archetype, which is the last phase of the individuation process.
