박완서 소설 속 돌봄 인식 방식 연구 (A Study on Ways of Care Perception Expressed in Park Wan Seo Novels)

초록

이 논문은 박완서 소설 「살아있는 날의 시작」과 「집보기는 그렇게 끝났다」, 「저물녘의 황홀」, 「지 알고 내 알고 하늘이 알건만」, 「친절한 복희씨」속여성인물들의 돌봄 노동에 주목한다. 지금까지 여성이 돌봄을 수행하는 것은당연하게 인식되어 왔다. 그런데 여성이 돌봄의 의존자가 되는 것은 고려 대상이 아니었다. 작품 속 여성인물들은 돌봄의 수행자일 때는 ‘사랑’이라는 명목으로 노동력을 착취당하고, 의존자가 되었을 때는 돌봄을 거부당한다. 이는 여성인물들이 돌봄 관계에 의문을 품고, 자신의 정체성을 자각하는 계기가 된다.
돌봄 노동을 수행하는 과정에서 여성이 겪게 되는 인식의 변화는 캐롤 길리건의 돌봄 윤리 관점으로 규명할 수 있다. 길리건은 “돌봄”, “관계”, “책임”을 중심으로 한 도덕적인 판단이 행동을 결정한다고 말한다. 그리고 여성이 돌봄을 제공해야하는 의무만 지닌 존재가 아니라 자신도 돌봄의 대상이될 수 있다는 인식의 전환으로까지 나아간다. 이는 여성이 돌봄 노동을 수행 할 때 겪는 가부장제의 폭력성을 극복하고, 젠더 해체의 가능성을 모색하고자 할 때 ‘자기 돌봄’의 윤리가 그 대안이 될 수 있다는 것을 시사한다.
이 논문에서는 돌봄 인식 방식을 시대별로 구분해 살펴보고자 했다. 1970년대 작품에는 여성인물이 왜곡된 상호의존적인 돌봄 상황 속에서 억압, 분노를 느끼면서 가부장제에 내재된 이중성을 ‘자각’하는 과정이 나타난다. 그리고 1980년대에 이르면 여성인물이 돌봄 의존자와 신뢰를 기반으로 공생관계를 맺고, 상호의존적인 관계 속에서 자신을 정당한 돌봄 의존자로 ‘인정’해나가는 인식 태도를 보인다. 이때 길리건이 강조한 “개인적인 성실성”에 내재된 솔직함이 돌봄노동 과정에서 훼손된 정체성을 회복할 대응 전략으로작동한다. 마지막으로 2000년대 작품에서는 1970년대 작품에서 다룬 내용과구조적인 측면에서 비슷한 양상을 보이고 있는 작품을 선별해 시대적 경과에 따른 인식의 변화에 주목했다. 여성인물은 자신의 삶을 긍정적으로 수용하는 인식의 변화를 거쳐 ‘자립’의지를 선택함으로써 자기 정체성의 회복을시도한다.
이로써 여성인물들이 돌봄 상황에서 시도한 젠더 해체 방식으로 자기 돌봄의 가능성을 획득하는 것을 확인할 수 있다. 박완서 소설은 여성이 돌봄과정에서 자기 존재를 긍정하고, 상호의존적인 돌봄 윤리를 수행하면서 자기돌봄의 윤리를 실현할 수 있다고 제안한다.

영어초록

The Study focuses on women’s caring labor described in Park WanSeo’s novel 『Beginning of Alive Days』, 「She knows, I know, and Heavenknows」 and 「The Trance of Falling Sun」, 「Kindhearted Bokhee」. Untilnow, women’s caring labor has been recognized natural. However, whenit comes to women being subjected to receive caring, they tend to berejected. Main characters of aforementioned novels are dedicated to caringwhen they are “provider”, in the name of love, and when they become“receiver” of such care, they are rejected due to family power structure.
This serves as an momentum for the female characters to become awareof their identity, questioning their caring relationship.
The changes in the perception experienced by women in carrying outtheir care labor can be examined from Carol Gilligan's perspective onethics of care. Gilligan says moral judgments centering around care, relationship, and responsibility to make a determination of actions. Inaddition, she goes further even to the change in the perception of thatwomen are not such the being having obligations only to provide care,but they themselves are also supposed be the object of care. Thissuggests that the ethics of self care could be an alternative whenwomen try to overcome the violence of the patriarchal system they aresuffering while carrying out their care labor and seek for the possibility of gender dissolution.
This study intended to look into the ways of care perception expressedin Park Wan Seo novels by classifying them into periods. In her novelsin the 1970s, female characters are expressed as the ones who becomeconscious of the duplicity inherent in the patriarchal system whilefeeling suppression, anger under their distorted and interdependent caringsituations. And in the 1980s, female characters show a change in theirperception of that they enter into a symbiotic relationship with their caredependents based on a trust and recognize themselves as a personentitled to be cared in such interdependent relationships. At this moment,the candidness inherent in the personal integrity emphasized by Gilliganworks as a counterstrategy to restore the identity damaged in the processof care labor. Lastly, this study sorted her novels out of the ones in the2000s as the works showing similar in terms of structure to the contentscovered in the ones in the 1970s and noted the changes in the perceptionwith the passage of the time. Female characters attempt to recover theiridentity by choosing self-reliance through some changes in theirperception to embrace their life positively.
Thus, this study was able to find out that those female charactersexpressed in Park Wan Seo novels acquire the possibility of self care bymeans of a gender dissolution attempted under their caring situations.
Park Wan Seo novels suggest that women can realize the ethics of selfcare while acknowledging their own existence in their caring process andcarrying out interdependent care ethics.
