제국 각축관계 하의 타이완인: 인도수용소 경험을 중심으로 (Under Tensions of Empires : Experiences of Taiwanese in the Internment Camps in India)

초록

1941년 12월 8일, 일본이 진주만과 말레이반도 등지에 대해 공격을 개시한 후, 교전국 쌍방이 방첩에 근거하여 ‘적국인’을 구류하기 시작하였다. 영국령 말레이시아(현 싱가포르와 말레이시아)의 일본국민(200여 명의 타이완인 포함)들은 집합, 전전해 인도로 이송되었다. 그들은 우선 델리 부근의 고성인 푸라나 킬라(Purana Qila)에 주둔하다가 나중에 중부지방의 아지메르(Ajmer)성의 데올리(Deoli) 수용소(Japanese Internment Camp, Deoli/Ajmer)에 구류되었다. 1946년 5월이 되어서야 그곳에서 떠나 싱가포르에서 고향으로 갈 귀환선을 기다렸다.
본문은 인도수용소 내부의 생활을 다시 구성하고, 또한 교전국 쌍방의 적국인에 대한 대우를 비교하고자 한다. 양자의 관리규정 상에는 큰 차이가 없어 보이지만, 양식 공급의 부족, 체벌, 강제노동, 또한 여성에게 매춘을 강요한 행위 등은 일본군이 지적된 주요 원인이었다. 이와 대조해 영국군 통제 하의 인도수용소 내부의 타이완인은 이러한 박해를 당하지 않았을 뿐만 아니라, 오히려 무릉도원과 같은 생활을 경험했던 것으로 보인다. 그러나 적십자회 등의 보고에서 ‘아시아식’ 등 용어를 통해 하늘 높은 곳에 있는 것 같은 서양 백인들이 동양인들을 바라보는 시선도 엿볼 수 있다.
한편 전쟁 시기의 거주 제한과 생활이라는 특수한 시공간에서는 수용소 내부에서 일본인, 오키나와인과 타이완인의 식민 계층성과 경계선이 여전히 존재했다. 또한 수용소 내의 집단생활에서 충국애국(忠君愛國) 사상을 강조함으로써 원래 해외에서는 일본어와 일본식 교육을 배울 기회가 적었던 아이들이 오히려 제한된 공간 내에서 일본인이 되는 학습을 하게 되었던 것이다.

영어초록

After Japan launched its surprise attacks on Peral Harbor and subsequently on the Malay Peninsula on 8 December 1941, the belligerent countries immediately took actions to arrest and detain ¡§enemy aliens¡¨ for counter-espionage reasons. British Malaya was no exception. Those Japanese subjects¡Xincluding more than 200 Taiwanese¡Xwho dwelled in Singapore and the Malay Peninsula were initially locally detained and then collectively transferred to India for further internment. They were firstly interned in the Purana Qila (Old Fort) in New Delhi and later moved to the Japanese Internment Camp in Deoli, Ajmer in central India. Finally in May 1946, these internees were relocated back to Singapore where they were waiting for repatriation by ships which could take them home.
This article not only reconstructs the lives of internees in the internment camps in India but also compares and contrasts how different belligerent powers treated them. Although there seemed to be no significant difference between their administration, it should be noted that the Japanese military and the British military differed in their actions toward internees. The Japanese military was largely denounced for their ill-treatment and inappropriate practices, such as the shortage of food supply, physical punishments, forced labor, and female sexual slavery. On the contrary, those Taiwanese internees who lived in the internment camp operated by the British military did not experience such cruelty and seemed to live in comfort instead. Some phrases seen in the records of the Red Cross, however, implicitly reveal the existence of racial discrimination against the peoples of the Orient in the gaze of the White people.
In addition, in the internment camps Japan¡¦s colonial class structure was still found to be in operation to hierarchically distinguish internees into the Japanese inlanders, the Ryukyuans, and Taiwanese even though they were in such difficult conditions of being physically restricted during the wartime period. For these overseas Taiwanese, who originally had no strong connection with Japanese language and education, living Japanese-style communal lives as well as expressing loyalty to the Emperor and patriotism to the Empire led them to a process of becoming Japanese. These experiences, however, triggered off new predicaments and challenges for Taiwanese afterward in the post-war era when they confronted situations of the change of their nationality and re-Sinicization.
