영웅소설의 흥미요소와 스토리텔링의 의미 (The interesting elements of hero novels and the meaning of storytelling)

초록

이 연구는 조선시대에 창작․애독되었던 영웅소설을 대상으로 하여 대중의 인기를 끌 수 있었던 흥미요소가 무엇인가를 스토리텔링의 관점에서 살펴보았다. 이는 통속적 성격이 강한 영웅소설이 많은 작품 중에서 치열한 경쟁을 통하여 긴 생명력을 가지고 현존해 올 수 있었던 것은 독특한 서사구조의 일정한 공식과 유사한 흥미요소를 가진 패턴이 존재했을 것으로 보기 때문이다. 본고에서는 조선시대 사람들에게 가장 흡입력 있게 향유되었을 영웅소설이 가지고 있는 흥미요소를 찾아서 분석하고, 이것은 작품에 따라 어떠한 의미로 스토리텔링하고 있는가를 세 가지로 살펴보았다.
첫째는 호기심 유발을 위한 전략 스토리텔링을 들 수 있다. 영웅소설이 호기심을 유발시킬 수 있는 요소로 탁월한 주인공의 일생을 통해 펼쳐지는 탐색과 모험담, 애정담, 장애물, 아이템, 이원론적 판타지 공간을 통해 고난을 극복하고 승리감을 얻도록 전략적으로 상승적인 욕망 구조를 스토리텔링하고 있다고 보았다.
둘째는 몰입과 감정이입을 위한 스토리텔링을 들 수 있다. 영웅소설 스토리텔러는 몰입을 위한 감정이입을 전환시키는 방법으로 위기를 단계별로 조성하고 긴장이 최고조에 이르게 한 다음 책의 권을 바꾸는 방법을 활용한 경우를 들 수 있다. 또한 영웅소설은 다양한 사건을 플롯으로 구성해서 반복적으로 변형시켜서 단계적으로 올라가는 사건과 경쟁을 스토리텔링한 점이다. 그리고 사건을 영웅능력으로 해결하고 또 다른 사건과 부딪치는 과정에서 레벨이 상승할수록 어려운 갈등구조를 야기해야만 했다. 스토리텔러는 독자들의 몰입도가 높아지도록 최고의 몰입을 위해 영웅과 적대자가 크라이막스 단계에서 최후의 싸움을 치열하게 형상화한 것이다.
셋째는 욕망성취를 위한 스토리텔링을 들 수 있다. 조선시대에 창작한 영웅소설이 대중들에게 큰 인기를 끌 수 있었던 이유는 인간의 다양한 욕망을 표출하고 그것의 성취를 낭만적으로 스토리텔링하는 것이다. 이러한 세속적인 욕망성취를 위해 판타지를 활용한 현실도피, 일탈의 욕구를 충족시켜주는 요소를 많이 수용하고 있다. 개성있는 영웅 캐릭터를 가진 주인공, 도피 공간, 자유와 환상, 해소, 여가, 꿈 등 주인공이 작품에서 추구해야할 목표나 가치가 다르다는 의미다. <유충렬전>과 <조웅전> 등은 충을 매개로 한 국가적 도덕윤리를 회복하는 것이고, <소대성전>, <장풍운전>은 가문회복의 욕망을, <백학선전>, <홍계월전> 등은 남녀 간의 애정성취에 대한 일탈의 욕망을 스토리텔링하고 있다.
이러한 영웅소설의 주인공은 처음부터 끝까지 무엇인가를 추구하는 이야기만 사건화하여 반복적으로 전개해 간다. 작품에서 주인공이 추구하는 가치마다 관련된 사건이 일어나면서 주인공에게 삶의 균형이 깨지고, 이로 인해서 주인공은 자신의 욕망성취를 방해하는 모든 적대 세력에 맞서가면서 자신의 욕망을 성취해 나간다. 이러한 스토리텔링은 향유자의 욕망을 사로잡는 하나의 요인으로 작용하였다고 하겠다.

영어초록

The study looked at the elements of storytelling that were popular among the public, targeting hero novels that were created and loved during the Joseon Dynasty. This is because among the many works of hero novels with strong popular characters, fierce competition has allowed them to exist with a long life force because it is believed that there was a pattern with an interesting element similar to a certain formula of a unique narrative structure. In this book, we found and analyzed the interesting elements of hero novels that would have been most appealing to the people of the Joseon Dynasty, and looked at three different meanings of storytelling depending on the work.
The first is strategic storytelling to induce curiosity. The hero novel is a storytelling of a strategically elevated desire structure to overcome hardships and gain a sense of victory through exploration, adventure stories, love stories, obstacles, items, and dualistic fantasy spaces that are unfolded through the life of an outstanding protagonist.
The second is empathy storytelling for immersion. A hero storyteller can be used to create a crisis step by step, bring tension to its peak, and then change the book's rights as a way to transform empathy for immersion. Also, hero fiction is a storytelling of events and competitions, which are staged by repeatedly transforming various events into plots. And in the process of solving a case with heroism and colliding with another one, the higher the level, the more difficult the conflict had to be. Storyteller is a fierce portrayal of a hero and his adversary in the climax stage for the best immersion to increase readers' immersion.
Third, you can hear the storytelling of achievement for the desire to deviate. The reason why hero novels created during the Joseon Dynasty were so popular with the public was to express various human desires and romanticize its achievements. In order to achieve this worldly desire, we are embracing many factors that satisfy the desire to escape from reality and to deviate from daily life using fantasy. This means that the main character with a unique hero character, escape space, freedom and fantasy, resolution, leisure and dream, etc. have different goals or values to pursue in his work. "Yoo Chung-ryeoljeon" and "Jo Woongjeon" are about restoring national moral ethics through loyalty, "Sodae Seongjeon" and "Jangpung Driving" are about the desire to restore the family, and "Baekhakseonjeon" and "Honggyewoljeon" are about the desire to deviate from the love between men and women.
The main character of this hero novel repeatedly unfolds the story of pursuing something from beginning to end. In the work, the balance of life is broken by events related to each value the main character pursues, and the main character achieves his desire by confronting all the hostile forces that hinder his desire. This storytelling was one of the factors that captivated the appetites.
