‘감정’과 ‘노동’이라는 의미소(意味素)－『신생활』에 실린 신일용의 글을 중심으로－ (Semes on ‘Emotion’ and ‘Labor’－Focusing on Shin Il-yong’s writings in ‘New Life’－)

초록

신일용은 『신생활』의 기자가 되기 이전에 의사였다. 의사로서 그는 가난한 환자, 부랑자, 여성, 나환자, 의지할 곳 없는 어린이들을 만났고 이들의 전염병, 영양실조, 성병 등을 치료했다. 그의 글쓰기는 기자로 전향한 뒤에 시작되었지만 글쓰기의 중심에는 자신의 임상의 경험이 자리하고 있었다.
이 글은 『신생활』에 실린 신일용의 글을 대상으로 그의 글쓰기이자 사유의 키워드인 ‘감정, 노동’이 낡은 세계를 면밀하게 관찰할 수 있는 언어이자 새로운 사회를 상상할 수 있게 하는 의미소였음을 밝히고자 한다.
여기서 감정은 정확히 말하면 ‘민중의 감정’이라 부를 수 있는 것이며 신일용은 이 감정이 ‘본능’과 ‘충동’에 기반한 것임을 적극적으로 피력하였다. 신일용의 창작시 「밤비」에서 화자는 자신이 ‘낡은 껍질’에 쌓여 있다는 괴로움을 토로하지만 동시에 ‘새 옷’을 입는 것도 주저하고 있는데 이는 ‘새 옷’ 역시 언젠가는 ‘낡은 껍질’이 된다라는 것을 알고 있었기 때문이다. 신일용은 ‘새 옷’의 ‘새것의 성질’을 보존하는 유일한 방법은 그것이 ‘생’의 자질을 포함한 것이어야 한다는 생각을 갖고 있었고 그 ‘생’이 보존된 곳이 ‘본능’과 ‘충동’이라고 보았다. “최대의 고통”에서 비롯한 “창조적 반역적 의지”의 표현, 신일용에게 작가는 생에 기반한 복잡한 욕망의 관계성을 만들어내 그것을 증폭시키는 자에 다름 아니었다.
신일용이 ‘낡은 껍질’과 ‘새 옷’의 변증법적 관계에 대해 꾸준히 사유한 까닭은 세계에 대한 새로운 인식을 욕망했기 때문이다. 세계에 대한 새로운 인식은 지금 속한 세계를 다른 관점으로 들여다보는 일에서부터 시작한다. 그런 관점을 제공한 것이 맑스주의의 언어였다. 특히 ‘노동’이라는 키워드로 세계를 봄으로써 세계의 비합리성에 대해 사유할 수 있었다.
「부인문제의 일고찰-자유주의와 현모양처사상」은 신일용이 『신생활』 제1호에서부터 제5호까지 꾸준히 연재했던 글로 가정부인의 가사활동을 임은계약적 관점에서 파악하고 있는 글이다. 여기서 특기할만한 것은 노동자의 임은계약이 아닌 가정에서 여성의 역할을 ‘노동’으로 보고자 한다는 것이다. 임금문제의 개념으로 여성의 가사활동에 접근함으로써 신일용은 세계의 ‘비합리성’을 강화시킨다. 이 글에서 그는 여성의 가사노동은 “교환계-시장”이 부재하므로 교환가치가 성립할 수 없다는 점이 ‘비문명적’일뿐만 아니라 관계가 ‘불합리’하다고 주장하였다.
하지만 이 글은 비합리성을 지적하는 데에서 그치지 않고 합리성에 기반한 이상적 인간관계와 생활의 모습을 제안한다. 그가 제시하는 육아와 가사노동을 전적으로 국가가 일임하는 세계는 에드워드 벨라미가 『뒤돌아보며』에서 제시한 미래 세계와 닮아 있다. 이것은 1920년대 초반에 활발히 이루어졌던 과학적 합리성과 실용주의에 기반한 이상주의에 대한 탐색의 시도에 기반해 있다. 이 이상주의는 이전 시기의 사회진화론 등이 근대 정신의 파산으로 비판되고 과학적 진화론과 실용주의에 기반해 정신주의적 철학이 나아갈 방향을 모색하는 과정에서 구상된 것이었다. 신일용이 국가사회주의가 실현된 에드워드 벨라미의 『뒤돌아보기』의 세계에 주목한 이유는 여성이나 약자를 포함하여 사회에 속한 모든 사람들이 평등하게 향유할 수 있는 ‘물질적 토대’를 만드는 작업에 대한 관심 때문이었다. 벨라미의 소설은 물질과 제도 중심의 유토피아라는 특성을 갖는다. 제도로서 뒷받침된 평등이 있어야 사회는 합리성을 띨 수 있다는 생각, 이 지점이 신일용에게 중요하게 다가왔다.

Shin Il-yong was a doctor before becoming a reporter for ‘New Life’. As a physician, he met poor patients, vagrants, women, lepers, and children without help, and treated them for infectious diseases, malnutrition and sexually transmitted diseases. His writing began after he turned to a journalist, but his clinical experience was at the center of his writing.
This article examines Shin Il-yong’s writings published in ‘New Life’ and reveals that ‘emotion’ and ‘labor’, the two keywords were a language for closely observing the old world and a meaning that made it possible to imagine a new society.
Here, ‘emotion’ can be precisely called ‘people’s emotions’, and Shin Il-yong actively expressed that these emotions are based on ‘instinct’ and ‘impulse’. In Shin Il-yong’s creative poem ‘Bambi(Rain at Night)’, the narrator expresses of the agony that he is piled up in an ‘old shell’, but at the same time he is hesitant to wear ‘new clothes’. This is because he knew that ‘new clothes’ would one day become ‘old shells’. Shin Il-yong believed that the only way to preserve the ‘new quality’ of ‘new clothes’ was that it should include the qualities of ‘life’. The place where that ‘life’ was preserved was ‘instinct’ and ‘impulse’. “creative rebellious will” from “the greatest suffering”, For Shin Il-yong, the artist was nothing more than a person who created and amplified the relationship of complex desires based on ‘life’.
The reason why Shin Il-yong continued to think about the dialectical relationship between ‘old shells’ and ‘new clothes’ was because he desired a new understanding of the world. A new perception of the world we belong to starts with looking at the world from a different perspective. It was the language of Marxism that provided such a perspective. In particular, by looking at the world with the keyword ‘labor’, I was able to think about the irrationality of the world.
A Study on the Problems of Wife - Liberalism and the Thoughts of Wise wife(Hyeonmyeongcheo) is an article that Shin Il-yong continuously serialized from ‘New Life’. This is an article that grasps the housekeeping activities of a housekeeper from the point of view of a labor contract. What is particularly noteworthy here is that it seeks to view the role of women as ‘labor’ in the family. By approaching women’s housekeeping activities with the concept of a wage problem, Shin Il-yong reinforces the world’s ‘irrationality’.
In this article, he argued that it is not only ‘uncivilized’ but also ‘irrational’ that exchange value cannot be established because women’s housework does not have an “market”. However, this article does not stop at pointing out irrationality, but suggests ideal human relationships and lifestyles based on rationality. The world in which the state completely entrusts childcare and housework that he suggests is similar to the world of the future presented by Edward Bellamy in Looking Backward. This is an attempt to search for idealism based on scientific rationality and pragmatism that was actively conducted in the early 1920s. This idealism was conceived while the social evolution theory of the previous period was criticized as the bankruptcy of the modern spirit, and the spiritualistic philosophy was searched for the direction based on scientific evolution and pragmatism. The reason why he paid attention to the world of Edward Bellamy’s ‘Looking Backward’ in which National Socialism was realized is because of his interest in creating a ‘material foundation’ that all people in society, including women and the weak, can enjoy equally. Bellamy’s novels have the characteristic of a utopia centered on materials and institutions. The idea that society can be rational only if there is equality supported as an institution. This point came to be important to him.
