근대 초기 유통 서적 연구 - 청년학우회 한성연회 도서종람소를 중심으로 (A Study on the Distribution of Books in early Modern Age of Korea-Focusing on the Book-Jongramso(縦覧所) of Young Men’s Study Society in Hansung(漢城))

초록

이 연구는 근대 초 민간에서 유통된 서적들을 살펴보기 위해 도서종람소에 주목하고 청년학우회의 한성연회 도서종람소를 하나의 사례로 들어 이 시기 청년ㆍ학생 및 지식인들 사이에서 소비되고 유통된 서적들의 구체적인 실태를 살펴보았다. 한성연회 도서종람소는 청년학우회가 추진한 활동 가운데 하나로 신문관을 수집소로, 학우회 기관지인 『소년』에 도서 수집을 광고했다. 장서의 수집은 서적의 기부를 통해 이루어졌는데 세 번에 걸쳐 광고된 기부 서적은 총 91종 157책에 이른다. 기부자는 총 16인과 단체 한 곳이며 이 가운데 학우회 회원은 단 3명에 불과하다. 이를 통해 한성연회 도서종람소가 청년학우회라는 단체에 한정되지 않고 보다 유연하게 운영되었음을 알 수 있다. 기부 서적을 살펴보면 다양한 언어 및 종류의 서적들이 기부되었고 특히 일본어와 교과서의 비중이 높다. 이는 기부자들의 상당수가 일본 유학생인 것과 밀접하게 관련된다. 또 서적의 종류 역시 전문화되어 있으며 당시 매체를 통해서는 접할 수 없는 희귀본이나 한정판 서적들이 상당하다. 이 점은 기부자들이 전문적이고 제한된 지식에 접근할 수 있는 위치나 기회가 상대적으로 높았을 가능성 말해준다. 반면 한글로 된 서적, 특히 소설은 한 권도 없었다는 점에서 당대 청년 학생들의 한글소설에 대한 인식을 엿볼 수 있다. 마지막으로 한성연회 도서종람소에 서적을 기부한 이들 가운데 학우회 소속은 소수였다는 점에서 도서종람소가 청년학우회 보다는 다른 네트워크를 통해 형성되었을 가능성을 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 도서종람소를 중심으로 한 지식의 공적 확대가 출판사나 유학생 그룹을 통해 보다 활성화될 수 있었음을 고찰했다.

영어초록

In this article, I investigate the book-jongramso(縦覧所) of young men’s study society in Hansung(漢城) to see the relation between the distribution of books and donated books in early modern age of Korea. The book-jongramso(縦覧所) of hansung(漢城) association is one of the activities that young men’s study society has promoted. The book-jongramso(縦覧所) of hansung(漢城) association is operated by the donate books and that books was collected in Sinmungan(新文館). The donate books have been published in So-yeon magazine through ads, as well as the book's title and the name of the donors was introduced. According to the advertisement, donations were over three times and the donate books was made up of amounting to a total of 91 species 157 volumes of books. Donators include sixteen persons and groups in one place, and young men’s study society’s members is only for 3 people. I understand that the book-jongramso(縦覧所) of hansung(漢城) association is not limited to run with versatility through this more not only the group called the young men’s study society. Donate books in a variety of languages and types of books were composed especially for the Japanese language and the proportion of textbooks. This is related to the number of donors who are students to study in Japan closely. In addition, the kind of the book is specialized, and the rare book and limited edition book which cannot contact are considerably included through the circulation net at the time. There is this point at the position where the limited knowledge that the person who contributed it wins technically is near and tells that there were many opportunities when they can approach it. On the other hand, there is no Korean novel. This fact shows the recognition to the Korean novel of young man students at the time because there was not a Hangul Alphabet book particularly one novel. Finally I was able to confirm the possibility that a book general inspection place was formed through the network which was different from the young men’s study society because members of young men’s study society that contributed a book to a the book-jongramso(縦覧所) of hansung(漢城) association were few. I was able to consider that public expansion of the knowledge around the book general inspection place was activated through this more through the publisher and the students to study in Japan.
