초록

This study is to explore Odauchi Michitoshi(小田內通敏)'s perception of Chosŏn Rule and ‘Chosŏn Buraku Chyousa’(朝鮮部落調査) under the Japanese Imperial Rule. After the March First Movement, Imperialist Japan became interested in real and empirical research of the actual world rather than concerning old literature studies in order to control Chosŏn throughly against the resistance of people of Chosŏn, by saying 'Enlightened Administration'. Especially, Imperialist Japan intended to make a priority investigation of manners and customs of the Chosŏn villages. Therefore, it employed Odauchi Michitoshi(小田內通敏) as a part-time investigator to research Chosŏn villages on 1920.
Odauchi majored in the human geography and became a geographer of non-mainstreamers. While he criticized the physical geography which concentrated on the natural phenomenon and the configuration of the ground, he emphasized the connection of human life and natural factors. Therefore, he investigated the manners and customs, economy, society life, history of villages and the configuration of the ground, and so forth by making an on-the-spot survey of the villages. Therefore, Chosŏn Sotokufu(朝鮮總督府) noticed his many survey works and supported his activities.
He surveyed 16 villages or more, the people of land made arable by forest clearing and Chinese emigrants from 1920 to 1925.
His data for investigation contributed to the execution of assimilation policy and combined the political propaganda of Imperial Japan with the results of modern research. Also, they introduced a few right-wingers to accept its propaganda. Furthermore, they contributed the development of Japanese geography and influenced the investigation method and activity of following researchers such as Jenshou Eisuke(善生永助) and Murayama Chijun(村山智順).
