<시골여자 셜은사졍>에 나타난 ‘서러움’의 동인과 작품의 시대적 의미 (The social meaning and the causes of sorrowfulness in “Countryside Women's Sorrowful Stories”)

초록

본고는 <시골여자 셜은사졍>에 나타난 서러움이라는 감정을 주목하여 그 원인과 경과를 살피고, 서러움이라는 감정과 관련하여 작품이 지닌 의미를 고찰하는 데에 목적을 둔다.
<시골여자 셜은사졍>은 한국의 근대전환기 구여성이 직면했던 부당한 이혼요구와 이로 인한 구여성의 서러움을 표현한 작품이다. 그동안의 논의는 주로 전통과 개화, 신구의 구도로 작품을 해석하거나 이혼담론과 이에 대한 구여성의 인식을 살피는 방식으로 진행되었다.
본고는 작품에 나타난 서러움의 감정을 주목하여 작품의 시대적 의미를 재해석하였다. 감정이란 것이 생득적이거나 자연적으로 발생하는 것이라기보다는 사회적 관계에 의해 구성되는 사회적 산물이라 볼 수 있기 때문이다. 일반적으로 구여성은 전통적인 가족 관계 안에서 자신의 역할을 충실히 수행함으로써 그 존재감을 인정받아 왔다. 남편의 부재가 원망과 한스러운 상황으로 그려지기는 하였으나 그럴수록 가정 내에서의 역할과 ‘말없음’의 미덕으로 자신의 위치를 고수할 수 있었다. 그런데 <시골여자 셜은사졍>에는 이러한 기존의 양상과 다소 차별적인 구여성의 모습이 나타나 있다. 특히 서러움이라는 감정 언어를 통해 그들 스스로의 정체성을 직접 말하고 있다.
작품에 나타난 서러움은 화자인 구여성이 남편과의 관계를 근대적 의미의 사랑을 바탕으로 설정한 데에서 출발한다. 근대적 의미의 사랑이란 상대를 정신적 교류의 대상이자 자신의 불완전한 부분을 완전하게 해주는 대상으로 상정하고, 그와의 유대를 통해 궁극적으로 자신의 존재를 확인하는 것을 말한다. 이러한 상황에 있었으므로 남편의 부재와 이혼통보는 바로 자기 존재의 부정이자 사회적 권리의 상실로 이어질 수밖에 없다. 따라서 작품에 나타난 서러움이라는 감정은 근대적 의미의 사랑, 사회 내의 자기 존재 확인과 인정이라는 당대 사회적 상황과 밀접히 관련되어 있음을 확인할 수 있다.
이와 같이 <시골여자 셜은사졍>은 구여성 스스로 자신들이 처한 사회적 정체성을 서러움으로 전면화하고, 사회 전체에 이 문제를 공유하고 공론화하는 텍스트로서 의미를 지닌다. 따라서 <시골여자 셜은사졍>의 지속적인 필사와 향유는 미처 자신의 상황을 알아차리지 못한 구여성들에게도 스스로의 존재감을 확인하도록 하고, 함께 연대하도록 만든 인정투쟁의 행위였다는 점에서도 의미가 있다.

영어초록

This paper pays attention to the emotion of sorrowfulness explored in the works related to “Countryside Women’s Sorrowful Stories” and investigates its cause and effect to study the social meaning of the works.
“Countryside Women's Sorrowful Stories” is a work that conveys the injustice of men demanding a divorce from women and the subsequent resentment experienced by women during early 20th century modernizing Korea.
The discussions in the past have mainly been undertaken either by interpreting the works through the contrast of tradition and enlightenment, the macroscopic antagonism of old and new, or by examining the discourse of divorce and how women from the olden days perceived this.
This paper reinterpreted the work by highlighting the emotion of sorrowfulness in the work. This is because the emotion of sorrowfulness is particularly emphasized in this work, and emotions can be seen as a social product generated by social relations rather than produced innately or naturally.
Through such a perspective, the feeling of sorrowfulness emphasized in this work was examined as the basis for the newly emerging romantic love of the modernizing period. Romantic love presumes the other person as an object of psychological interdependence which completes one's imperfections, and confirms one's existence through a bond with his or her significant other. Therefore, the absence or disappearance of the object of love immediately leads to self-deficiency and destruction of self-value.
The recognition of the loss of the object of love and the damage to self-worth is expressed in the work as “sorrowfulness.” Sorrow is an emotion that arises when one does not have what one is naturally entitled to. Sorrow is the representation of self-recognition and understanding of the situation that the narrator herself is facing. In “Countryside Women's Sorrowful Stories,” due to her husband's announcement of divorce, the narrator is forced to experience the loss of love once again and lose her entitlement as a social being. However, it was fundamentally the society's fault that was imposed on her that had nothing to do with her will. Therefore, the emotion of sorrowfulness is bound to be called upon again.
Such sorrow of “Countryside Women's Sorrowful Stories” was the language in which the narrator expresses her identity. Paradoxically, sorrow holds an important meaning in the sense that it was a language of confirming one’s identity as a modern self, and a language usefully mobilized to unite people to protest against frustration. However, the image of sorrowfulness widely employed as the dwelling of one’s own misfortune and self-pity can be seen as a limitation as it rather internalizes the marginalized status of women of the olden days.
