Generative AI 활용 공동디자인 워크숍에서 창의성 향상을 위한 퍼실리테이션과 프로세스 모델 제안 - ChatGPT의 활용을 중심으로 (Proposal of a Facilitation and Process Model for Enhancing Creativity in Co-design Workshops with Generative AI: The Use of ChatGPT)

초록

연구배경 오늘날의 복잡하고 다원적인 사회문제 해결을 위해서는 다학제적 협력이 필수적이며 이러한 문제해결에 있어 협력적이고 집단적인 ‘창의성’이 중요한 요소로 부각되고 있다. 현재 사회 전반에서는 AI와 협업을통해 창의성 극대화를 위한 시도가 이어지는 반면, 공동디자인 맥락의 창의성 연구와 창의성 극대화를 위한 연구는 부족한 것으로 나타났다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 공동디자인 과정에서 생성형 AI를 활용하여 참여자들의 창의성을 향상시킬 수 있는 효과적인 퍼실리테이션 역할과 생성형 AI를 활용한 공동디자인 워크숍 프로세스 모델 제안을 목적으로 한다.
연구방법 이론적 고찰을 통해 공동디자인 실행원칙을 정의하고, 공동디자인 실행원칙에 기반한 창의성 요소와 창의성 퍼실리테이션 역할을 도출하였다. 도출된 개념을 바탕으로 인간-생성형 AI와의 협업을 통한 창의성촉진을 위한 워크숍 프로세스 및 툴킷을 설계하고 워크숍 실험을 진행하였다. 동일한 집단을 대상으로 ChatGPT 제공 여부를 다르게 하는 실험처치를 통해 두 차례 워크숍을 진행하여 비교 검증하였다. 워크숍진행 과정에 대한관찰분석, 참여자의 성찰 인터뷰, 및 산출물에 대한 전문가 평가를 종합하여 시사점을 도출하였다. 이를 반영하여 창의성 향상을 위한 생성형 AI 활용 워크숍 프로세스 모델을 블루프린트의 형태로 제안하였다.
연구결과 첫째, 공동디자인 실행원칙 10가지 항목을 도출하고, 원칙에 따른 공동디자인 창의성 5가지 상위요소와 15가지 하위 요소를 도출하였다. 창의성 하위 요소에 대응하는 창의성 퍼실리테이션 요소를 14가지 항목으로 도출하였다. 둘째, ChatGPT 활용은 공동디자인의 창의성의 요소인, ‘[CC1]협업에 필요한 지식’, ‘[CC3] 협력적 디자인 사고’, ‘[CC4]아이디어 표현’, ‘[CC5]협업 환경’ 지원 등에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤으며, ChatGPT 가 보조 퍼실리테이터로서 협업한 결과, (a)지식 지원 (b)아이디어 표현 지원 (b)협업 촉진 퍼실리테이션의 역할이 유용하였다. 셋째, 산출물의 창의성 평가 결과를 비교해보면, 유용성의 경우 동일한 반면, 유창성의 경우ChatGPT 워크숍이 더 높았으며, 독창성 측면에서는 일반 워크숍이 더 높게 평가되었다. 이는 ChatGPT 활용이워크숍의 생산성을 높이는 데 기여하였으나, 아이디어의 질을 향상하는 데에는 한계가 있는 것으로 판단되었다.
결론 창의성 향상을 위한 퍼실리테이터 역할로서 AI와 인간의 협업은 대체로 참여자의 창의성에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤으나, 참여자의 내재적 동기에 따라 창의성 저해 요소로 작용할 우려가 있음을 확인하였다. 이에따라 (인간)퍼실리테이터의 지속적인 개입을 통해, 양질의 아이디어로 발전시킬 수 있도록 지원하는 것이 중요하다. 본 연구의 학문적 시사점으로는 생성형 AI 활용 공동디자인 워크숍 실증연구를 통해 창의성 퍼실리테이션협업 도구로서 AI의 활용의 유용성을 검증하였으며, 공동디자인 프로세스를 기반으로 인간-생성형 AI의 효과적협업의 방향성을 제시하였다. 실무적 시사점으로, 복잡하고 다학제적인 특성을 가진 공동디자인 활동 과정에서실질적인 문제해결을 위해 생성형 AI를 사용한 공동디자인 워크숍 프로세스 모델을 구체적인 청사진으로 제안함으로써 향후 다양한 문제해결 분야에서 적용될 수 있다.

영어초록

Background In today’s complex and multidimensional societal issues, interdisciplinary collaboration is essential, and cooperative and collective ‘creativity’ is increasingly highlighted as a crucial factor in addressing such challenges. While endeavors to enhance creativity through artificial intelligence (AI) collaboration persist across diverse sectors of society, literature addressing creativity within the framework of co-design and studies aimed at maximizing creativity are scarce. Therefore, this study aims to propose an effective facilitation role utilizing generative AI in the co-design process that enhances participants’ creativity and to suggest a workshop process model for co-design utilizing generative AI.
Methods Through theoretical considerations, principles for executing co-design were defined and creativity elements and facilitation roles were derived based on these principles. Building upon these concepts, a workshop process and toolkit for fostering creativity through collaboration between humans and generative AI were designed. Workshop experiments were conducted, employing different treatments regarding the provision of ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer), to compare and verify the effectiveness of two workshop sessions with the same group. Observational analyses of the workshop process, reflective interviews with participants, and expert evaluations of the outputs were conducted to derive insights. Reflecting on these findings, a blueprint for a workshop process model leveraging generative AI for enhancing creativity was proposed.
Results 10 principles of co-design execution were derived, and 5 creativity elements were identified along with 15 sub-elements in accordance with these principles. Corresponding to the sub- elements of creativity, 14 elements of creativity facilitation were identified. The utilization of ChatGPT positively influenced various aspects of creativity in co-design, such as facilitating collaborative knowledge [CC1], fostering collaborative design thinking [CC3], aiding idea expression [CC4], and supporting the collaborative environment [CC5]. As a supplementary facilitator, ChatGPT played a useful role in providing knowledge support, aiding idea expression, and facilitating collaboration. Comparing the evaluation results of creative output, while usefulness remained consistent, fluency was higher in ChatGPT workshops. Conversely, originality was rated higher in conventional workshops. This suggests that while the utilization of ChatGPT contributed to increasing productivity in workshops, ChatGPT may have limitations in enhancing the quality of ideas.
Conclusions The collaborative role of AI as a facilitator for enhancing creativity generally had a positive impact on participants’ creativity. However, depending on participants’ intrinsic motivations, AI could potentially act as a hindering factor to creativity. Thus, continuous intervention by human facilitators is deemed crucial to support the evolution of high-quality ideas. This study validates the utility of utilizing generative AI as a collaborative creativity facilitation tool through empirical research in co- design workshops and suggests the direction for effective collaboration between human and generative AI based on the co-design process. From a practical standpoint, proposing a concrete blueprint for a co- design workshop process model utilizing generative AI is vital for addressing practical problem-solving in complex and interdisciplinary co-design activities. This model can be applied across various problem- solving domains in the future.
