근대문학의 조건, 네이션≠국가의 경험 (The Pre-condition of Modern Literature: Nation≠State)

초록

근대문학은 종종 민족문학 혹은 국민문학으로 규정된다. 이는 근대문학이 민족국가 혹은 국민국가를 전제한다는 뜻이기도 하다. 그런 점에서 식민지 시대 한국의 근대문학은 nation≠state의 경험을 토대로 형성되었다는 점에서 통념에 위배된다. 하지만 그러한 통념은 근대문학 형성의 역사와 제국주의에 의한 식민지 개척의 역사가 겹친다는 사실을 무시하고 있다. 근대문학의 역사는 식민지/피식민지의 경험이 교차하는 곳에서 형성된 것이 사실이다. 따라서 nation≠state의 경험은 오히려 식민지 문학에 한정되는 것이 아니라 전지구적 현상으로 간주되어야 한다. 근대문학은 nation≠state의 경험이 문학에 반영된 결과인 것이다. 이는 식민모국의 문학과 피식민지 문학 모두에 해당되는 현상이다. 따라서 식민지 조선의 민족문학 혹은 국민문학은 항상 nation≠state의 경험을 전제한다. 다시 말해서 민족문학 혹은 국민문학은 민족국가 혹은 국민국가의 불가능성을 조건으로 형성된 것이다. 그 과정에서 nation 개념은 여러 차례 변화를 경험한 바 있다. 근대문학의 역사를 nation 개념의 변천에 따라서 그 시기를 구분할 수 있을 정도이다.
개화기 무렵 서구어 nation은 처음에는 ‘국민’으로 나중에는 ‘민족’으로 번역되었다. ‘국민’이 강조될 무렵 ‘국가’에 대한 인식이 생겨났지만, ‘민족’이 등장하면서 nation은 ‘국가’와 구별되는 의미로 사용되었다. 당시 국가는 ‘문명/국가’ 담론을 통해서 그 의미가 발전하였고, 민족은 ‘민족/문화’ 인식을 통해서 확산되었다. 국가와 문명, 민족과 문화의 쌍이 확립된 것이다. 그 뒤에 문화와 문명의 대립은 정신과 물질의 대립으로 발전하게 된다. 물질에 대한 정신의 우위에 따라서 국가보다는 민족이 우위를 차지하게 된 것은 러일전쟁 이후의 현상이다. 민족과 국가의 불균형과 불일치가 자리잡게 된 것이다. 이를 바탕으로 개화기 문학이 형성된다. 이후 언문일치의 분위기가 형성되고 ‘문화’를 담당하는 ‘민족문학’ 인식이 빛을 보게 된다. 1930년대에 이르러 사태는 급변한다. 만주사변과 중일전쟁을 통해 일본의 국가주의가 강화되고, ‘국가’의 우위를 반영하는 ‘국민문학’이 강요된다. 언어에서 표준어/방언의 구별이 확립되고, 제국/지방의 우열관계가 확립되는 시기가 이때이다. 이때 조선적인 것(=민족)은 표준어와 제국의 지배를 승인하는 ‘방언’과 ‘지방성’으로 전락하고 만다. 조선주의와 전통주의가 번창할수록 제국과 식민지의 서열구조는 더욱 확고해지는 것이다. 시에서 언문일치가 부정되고 방언이 부상하는 것도 마찬가지이다.

영어초록

Modern literature is more often than not defined in terms of national literature. It means that the formation of modern literature has been established based on nation state. This formulation has become a common sense in literary history. Modern Korean literature, however, cannot be aligned to this formulation, because it has been formed through unusual experiences of nation≠state (the conceptual break-up of nation and state). This formulation also ignores the fact that the historical formation of modern literature overlaps with the colonizing process of the Third World by imperial powers. That is to say, modern literature emerges where different kinds of experiences of the colonizer and the colonized intersect with each other. Therefore, the experience of nation≠state cannot be limited to literature of the colonized. Rather, it should be regarded as global phenomena. The experience of nation≠state gives a rise to modern literature. This is true not only in literature of the colonized but also that of the colonizer. The national literature of colonial Chosun always presupposes the experience of nation≠state. To put it in other words, Korean national literature or ․ has been founded upon the impossibility of the formation of the nation-state. Throughout the course of the formation of national literature, the concept of nation has undergone critical changes, according to which we can thus periodize modern literature into several phases.
In the late period of Chosun Dynasty, the term 'nation' was imported and translated into two different words: at first, kukmin (citizens of the state), and later minjok (people). The term kukmin signifies that the notion of state had just begun to emerge, while minjok reflects the fact that nation began to be conceptually distinguished from the state. In that period, the notion of state had developed in conjunction with the discourses of 'civilization/state.' In contrast, the meaning of nation had been disseminated through awakening to nation/culture. State was coupled with civilization; nation with culture. Later, the conceptual opposition between culture and civilization evolved into that of the spiritual and the material. It was immediately after Russo-Japanese Wars that nation's superiority over state began to be generally accepted, along with the superiority of the spiritual over the material. The discontinuity and imbalance between nation and state was widely agreed. It was based on this discontinuity that early modern literature of Korea had formed. Later, as the unity of speech and writing was pursued, national literature or minjokmunhak took the central role in building national culture. Around the 1930s, however, modern Korean literature had to undergo another fundamental change. Through the Manchurian Incident and the Second Sino-Japanese War, Japan's statism was reinforced and kukminmunhak (signaling the superiority of state over nation) was forcefully imposed on colonial Korea. It was in this period that binary oppositions between standard and non-standard languages, between imperial center and colonial periphery began to be established. In this situation, Korean national culture and language was classified as a mere dialect and parochialism which should be regulated by Japanese normative culture and language. This brought about a paradoxical situation in which the more Korean parochial culture prospers the stronger the hierarchy between center and periphery becomes. It was in this context that the unity of speech and writing was consciously rejected while regional dialects became dominant in poetry.
