Design Patterns Analysis of Business Intelligence Dashboards - Focusing on Tableau Public’s Viz of the Day

Business intelligence (BI) is a crucial skill due to the significance of data-driven decision-making. BI primarily involves data analysis, development, and the delivery of insights through data visualization and dashboards. This study analyzed design patterns and attributes in BI dashboards, focusing on the principles and patterns that make data visualization effective. This study used meta-analysis methods to investigate the design patterns and types of data visualization. It classified the design patterns of BI dashboards in three ways. Samples of 41 BI dashboards were selected from Tableau Public’s Viz of the Day, focusing on three main categories: chart type, design guidelines, and composition design patterns. The results revealed that 85.37% of BI dashboards used comparison charts and 78.05% of BI dashboards used trend charts. The results also showed that 75.61% of the selected BI dashboards used icons, and 65.85% did not use grids for visualization. Finally, based on the composition design patterns, 60.98% of the layouts of the dashboards were grouped and stratified, and screen fit and interactive feature details were mostly provided on demand and parametrization. The design can accelerate data visualization and help dashboard design charts that can facilitate data-driven decision-making through effective cognition through designs. Therefore, more design research should be conducted for cooperation within business and data-related industries.
