TCK인 재외동포 2세의 모국 방문 경험의 가치 탐색 - 한국대학을 온 재외동포를 중심으로 - (Exploring the Value of the Experience of Second Generation Overseas Koreans, TCKs, Visiting Their Home Country)

본 연구는 다문화를 경험한 TCK인 재외동포 2세의 모국 방문 경험의 의미와 가치를 탐색하기 위한 질적 연구이다. 연구 참여자는 12년 이상 외국생활을 한 뒤, 한국으로 대학을 온 20대 총 10명이다. 이들의 성장기 경험과 모국 방문 경험을알기 위해 세 차례의 심층면담, 자기 정체성 그래프 보고, Phinney(1992)의 정체성 검사를 실시했다. TCK인 재외동포 2세들의 가장 큰 특징은 국제적 장소 이동으로 인한 문화변용과 민족 정체성 관련 혼란으로 볼 수 있다. 심층면담 질문 영역은 민족 정체성 영역-언어·집단·문화·장소-관련해 한국이라는 장소에서 어떻게 이를 경험했는지 다루었다. 연구 결과 20세 이전 학령기에 모국을 방문하는재외동포 2세는 ‘모국’이라는 장소를 매개로 한국어를 보충하는 언어적 경험, 다수자가 되는 집단적 경험, 음식 및 놀이를 통해 한국 문화를 향유하는 문화적 경험, 뿌리와 집을 찾는 장소적 경험을 하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 한국 방문 경험이 여행자로서 향유하기, 닮은 타자 만나기, 뿌리 찾기, 정체성 통합하기 단계를거쳐 정체성 형성과 연결될 수 있음을 알아보았다, 이번 연구로 장소 정체성 관련해 재외동포 2세의 한국 방문의 가치와 의미를 밝혔다고 볼 수 있다. 외교부 주관재외동포 2세의 초청 프로그램 확대 가능성도 지지하는 연구라고 할 수 있다. 또한 한국 방문을 선택적으로 하는 부모들에게 자녀와 모국을 방문하는 것에 대해의미 있는 안내가 되었다고 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

This study is a qualitative study to explore the meaning and value of the experience of the second generation of overseas Koreans, TCKs who have experienced multiculturalism, visiting their home countries. The study participants were a total of 10 people in their 20s who came to Korea after living abroad for more than 12 years. In order to find out their experiences in the growth period and visiting their home country, three in-depth interviews, a report on self-identity graphs, and an identity test of Pinney (1992) were conducted. The biggest characteristics of the second generation of overseas Koreans, TCKs, can be seen as cultural transformation due to the movement of international places and confusion related to national identity. The in-depth interview questionnaire area dealt with how they experienced this in a place called Korea in relation to the area of national identity-language, group, culture, and place. As a result of the study, it was found that the second generation of overseas Koreans who visited their home country before the age of 20 had a linguistic experience of supplementing Korean language through a place called ‘home country’, a collective experience of becoming multiple people, and a locational experience of finding roots and homes through food and play. In addition, it was found that the experience of visiting Korea can be linked to identity formation through the stages of enjoying as a traveler, meeting others who resemble them, finding roots, and integrating identity. This study reveals the value and meaning of the second generation of overseas Koreans visiting Korea in relation to place identity. It can be said that it is a study that supports the possibility of expanding the invitation program for the second generation of overseas Koreans under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In addition, it can be said that it has been a meaningful guide to parents who selectively visit Korea regarding visiting their children and their home country.
