5・4운동 시기 아동문학과 엽성도(葉聖陶) 동화「허수아비」 속 세 여인 캐릭터 의미 연구 (A Study on Children’s Literature During the May 4th Movement and the Meanings of Three Women’s Characters in Ye Sheng Tao’s Fairy Tale 「Scarecrow」)

초록

이 글은 “5・4운동 시기 아동문학과 엽성도(葉聖陶) 동화 「허수아비」 속 세 여인 캐릭터 의미 연구”를 연구한 글이다.
연구 방법으로 첫째, 5・4 운동 시기와 그 시대의 아동문학을 알아보았다. 5・4 운동은 중국 현대문학의 탄생을 직접적으로 촉진시켜주었고 동시에 중국 현대아동문학은 이 시기부터 본격적으로 시작되었다. 이 시기 중국의 아동문학가들은 “문학연구회”를 만들었는데 그 대표적인 사람이 엽성도이다.
둘째, 「허수아비(槄草人)」 작품 속 세 여인의 캐릭터 의미를 알아보았다. 그 결과 첫 번째로 나오는 노부인 농부 캐릭터는 당시 중국이 안고 있는 농촌의 현실문제를 의미한다. 그 중에서도 허례허식하는 장례문제와 개혁하지 못하는 농민들의 자각의식을 문제로 들었다. 두 번째 나오는 부녀자의 이야기는 중국이 안고 있는 아동의 문제를 의미한다고 보았다. 세 번째는 자살하는 여인은 봉건주의 사상이 전해져 내려오는 중국의 악습 가운데 하나인 부녀자를 노비처럼 생각하는 인권문제를 의미한다고 보았다.
엽성도의 「허수아비(槄草人)」는 1919년에 5・4운동이 일어나고 3년 후인 1922에 쓰여졌다. 작품속 허수아비가 바라보는 이 사건들은 단지 동화에 나오는 하나의 에피소드가 아니다. 그것은 바로 당시 중국이 안고 있는 현실문제였다. 그 문제를 보고도 아무것도 할 수 없어 쓰러지는 허수아비는 현실의 문제를 자각하면서도 아무것도 할 수 없어 고뇌하는 엽성도 자신인 것이다

영어초록

This paper aimed to study <children’s literature during the May 4th Movement and the meanings of three women’s characters in Ye Sheng Tao’s fairy tale 「Scarecrow」>.
For this study, firstly, the period of the May 4th Movement and children’s literature during the period were considered. The May 4th Movement promoted the birth of Chinese modern literature directly and Chinese modern children’s literature started in earnest from this time, at the same time.
Chinese writers of children’s literature founded a “literature research society” in this period and Ye Sheng Tao is a representative writer. In addition, the active writing activities of the literature research society members during the May 4th Movement were pivotal in Chinese modern children’s literature and highly influenced the formation of Chinese modern children’s literature.
Secondly, the meanings of three women’s characters in 「Scarecrow」 were analyzed. As a result, it was revealed that the first story about an old female farmer refers to the realistic problem of Chinese farming villages of those days. Especially, the funeral culture full of empty formalities and vanity and the consciousness of farmers not to form are representative of the problems.
The second story about a woman and her daughter in a fishing village focuses on the child living with them, instead of the woman and her daughter. The woman and her daughter in a fishing village don’t give anything to the hungry child. They even ladle out cold water for the child crying in hunger and the child catches a severe cold.
This demonstrates that the Chinese government was incompetent and didn’t do anything for children in those days. In other words, the story about a woman and her daughter show children’s issue in China. The third story is about a woman suiciding. This is associated with the human rights issue to regard women as slaves in the Chinese feudalistic bad convention.
「Scarecrow」 of Ye Sheng Tao was written in 1922 three years after the May 4th Movement of 1919. These events seen by the scarecrow in 「Scarecrow」 are not merely an episode of the fairy tale.
These explain the issue of farming villages, the issue of children and the human rights issue of women in China of the times. The scarecrow falling down, because he cannot do anything even after witnessing the issues is Ye Sheng Tao himself that was conscious of the realistic problems, but could do nothing and was in agony. In other words, the scarecrow is the portrait of Ye Sheng Tao, an intellectual agonizing.
