초록

가발라의 세베리아누스는 5세기 초 콘스탄티노플에서 활동했던 주교였다. 그는 요한 크리소스토무스의 대적자로 알려져 있고, 당시 역사학자들에게 설교자와 학자로 인정받지 못했다. 그러나 그의 작품들은 5세기 초 성경해석을 이해하는데 중요하다. 당시 함께 활동했던 요한은 많은 작품들을 남겼기 때문에, 이 작품들과 세베리아누스의 작품들의 비교를 통해 당시 콘스탄티노플에서 활동한 신학자들이 어떻게 성경을 해석했는지 살펴볼 수 있다. 또한 그의 설교는 여러 언어로 남아있기 때문에, 동서교류문헌 연구에도 의미가 있다. 본 논문은 가발라의 세베리아누스의 에베소서 주석 1장을 중심으로 요한 크리소스토무스의 에베소서 강해와 비교한다. 이를 통해서 당시 에베소서를 어떻게 주해했는지 소개한다. 세베리아누스는 안디옥 학파의 해석방법론을 따라서 문자 중심적 해석을 우선시한다. 그리고 본문에서 해석상 오해가 발생하는 문제에 대해서 적극적으로 변증을 한다. 그는 에베소서를 주석하면서 하나님, 아들, 성도들에 대해서 설명한다. 하나님은 모든 것을 결정하시며, 아들과 성도들의 주이시며, 교회를 충만하게 하시는 분이시다. 예수님은 하나님의 본성적 아들로서 인간의 본성 아래로 오셔서 인간을 본성 위로 인도하는 분이다. 그리고 피로 속량을 이루시며, 하늘과 땅을 통일하셔서 인간이 하늘을 알게 하셨다. 성도는 하나님의 계획에 따라서 그리스도 안에서 양자로 확정된 자들이고, 그리스도께서 자신의 피로 속량한 자들이며, 순종과 믿음과 인침으로 하나님과 그리스도께 가까워진 자들이다.

Severian of Gabala, a bishop who served in Constantinople during the early 5th century, is notable for his theological stance in opposition to John Chrysostom. While historians of his era did not consider him a prominent preacher or scholar, his works hold significant value in shedding light on the biblical interpretations prevalent during this period. Since John Chrysostom, an influential figure of the time, left behind an extensive body of work, we can gain insights into the theological perspectives of theologians in Constantinople by comparing the writings of both John and Severian. Furthermore, the existence of his sermons in multiple languages makes them valuable contributions to ‘Studies on Manuscripts and Documents of East-West Exchanges.’ This paper focuses on Severian of Gabala's commentary on Ephesians Chapter 1 and compares it with John Chrysostom's homilies on the same text. Through this comparison, it introduces how the Epistle to the Ephesians was interpreted during that time. Severian follows the interpretation methodology of the Antioch school and emphasizes on literal exegesis. He actively addresses the interpretive challenges that arise within the text. In his commentary on Ephesians, he expounds upon the nature of God, the Son, and the saints. In Severian's theological framework, God assumes the role of ultimate authority, holding sway over both the Son and the saints, and serving as the One who fills the Church. Jesus, described as the natural Son of God, voluntarily descended to the realm of humanity, guiding humanity toward a higher plane beyond their inherent nature. Through the shedding of His blood, Jesus accomplished redemption, facilitating the unification of heaven and earth and enabling humanity to apprehend the divine realm. In Severian's perspective, the saints consist of those predestined as adopted children of God through Christ, individuals who have experienced redemption through Christ's sacrificial blood, and those who draw closer to God and Christ through obedience, faith, and the sealing of the Holy Spirit.
