Arguments on Artificial Intelligence and Transhumanism in Ex Machina and Transcendence Artificial intelligence (AI) is intelligence simulated or exhibited by machines such as computers. Transhumanism is “an international and intellectual movement that aims to transform the human condition by developing and making widely available sophisticated technologies to greatly enhance human intellectual, physical, and psychological capacities.” The movies, Ex Machina and Transcendence, have disputable themes about artificial intelligence and transhumanism. Ex Machina is a science-fiction thriller film, that plays on fears of the future, of artificial intelligence, and of the blurred difference between human life and its imitations. It shows how a humanoid robot seizes its power and dominates human world with tragic vision. Transcendence is a film about a scientist's drive for artificial intelligence, and it has dangerous implications when his consciousness is uploaded into a super computer. It especially deals with Kurzweil’s idea of ‘Singularity,’ which is “a future period during which the pace of technological change will be so rapid, its impact so deep, that human life will be irreversibly transformed.” The film not only aims to warn us about the perils of playing God and of technological overreach, but also suggests world-changing possibilities of “technological singularity.” It is hard to say whether such technology would bring utopia or dystopia in the future. There remain, however, many questions to be solved to prove materiality of human mentality, and is still strong faith in immateriality of human soul.
