아리스토텔레스의 습관 이해에 대한 기독교교육적 성찰 - 숙련성, 자발성, 실천성, 공동체성을 중심으로 - (Christian Educational Reflections on Aristotle's Understanding of Habits : Focusing on Its Proficiency, Willingness, Practicality, and Communality)

초록

본 연구는 습관의 형성이 기독교교육에 던지는 시사점을 성찰하려는 목적으로 작성되었다. 특별히 고대 철학자 아리스토텔레스의 습관 개념과 습관 형성에 대해 고찰함으로써 신앙 형성을 목적으로 하는 기독교교육이 신앙의 어떤 측면을 고려해야 할지 살펴보고자 한다. 아리스토텔레스의 습관 이해는 크게 두 가지로 구별되는데, 하나는 개별 경험의 반복과 축적의 과정으로서 ‘에토스’이고, 다른 하나는 개별 경험들이 일정한 방향성을 가지고 안정된 태도나 성품으로 자리 잡은 상태로서 ‘헥시스’이다. 습관은 개별 행위를 반복하는 습관화 과정을 통해 인간 안에 품성으로 자리잡게 되고 더 나아가 탁월성(덕)으로 발전해 간다. 이러한 탁월성은 궁극적으로 인간의 최종 목적인 행복을 만들어 낸다. 탁월성은 탁월한 행위를 하였을 때 이르는 것이기에 습관을 들이고, 습관으로 살아가는 삶이 중요하다.
아리스토텔레스에게 있어서 습관 형성은 ‘숙련성,’ ‘자발성,’ ‘실천성,’ ‘공동체성’의 의미를 지닌다. 습관은 신앙과 긴밀한 관계에 놓여있다. 신앙을 통해 인간의 덕이 자란다는 것은 신앙이 습관의 요소일 수 있으며, 형성되고 성장한다는 의미를 지님을 알 수 있다. 신앙을 형성함에 있어 습관의 형성이 주는 시사점은 지대하다. 먼저 반복이 주는 놀라운 교육적 효과에 묻혀서 질적인 성숙에 대한 고찰을 놓치고 있지는 않았는지, 비판적이고 생성적인 질문이 기독교교육에 요청된다. 또한 습관이 자발적인 주체자의 행위를 통해 형성되듯이 기독교교육함이 타율과 강요가 아닌 자율적 의지에서 이루어지는가를 돌아보아야 한다. 셋째로, 습관이 작은 실천을 통해 탁월성을 지향하듯이 신앙이라는 것은 작은 몸짓, 작은 한 마디의 말에서 드러남으로 실천을 이루어야 한다. 마지막으로, 관습으로서의 습관은 신앙이 개인의 영역에 머무는 것이 아니라 공동체로 시선을 돌리고, 더 나아가 공동의 영역으로서 문화를 형성해가는 기독교교육이 요청되어야 한다.
기독교교육은 단순한 지식 전달의 교육이 아닌 형성을 이루는 교육이기에 도야(Bildung)의 차원에서 접근함으로 지평을 넓히고 상호 소통함으로 자기를 성찰하고 자기를 결정하는 교육을 이루어야 할 것이다. 이는 습관형성이 기독교교육에 선사하는 네 가지 기둥을 통해 얻게 되는 시사점을 통해 시작될 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This study aims to explore four pillars of habit formation and their implications for Christian education. The research interest emerges from our ‘new normal’ context after the COVID-19 pandemic. The new normal context has caused some drastic changes in society shaking the foundations, thinking habits, and life habits of human beings. In other words, people need to form new habits in their lives.
Noting such a necessity, in this research, I examine the concept of habit and how it can be related to Christian education. Particular attention is given to Aristotle’s concept of habit and his understanding of habit formation. Aristotle contends that habit has two dimensions: ethos and hexis. First, ethos means habit as repetition or accumulation of individual experiences. Second, hexis refers to habit which is formed by repeated individual experiences with certain directions and embodied as an attitude or a character. When one repeats a certain deed and when it becomes a habit of the person, the habit enables the person to form a character related to it and to lead a more excellentlife. By doing so, the person can experience happiness, which is the ultimate goal of human life. Because a more excellent life is possible by performing an excellent deed, it is important for each individual to repeat an excellent act, make it one’s habit, and live by the habit.
According to Aristotle, habit formation has four pillars: (1) proficiency, (2) willingness, (3) practicality, and (4) communality. First, habit formation takes proficiency because habits are formed not merely by behavioral repetition, but by intellectual skills such as critical thinking. Second, habit formation accompanies willingness because habits are formed by one’s voluntary will to repeat a certain deed. Third, habit formation is practical because it is possible by practicing some actual deeds. Fourth, habit formation is communal because a habit is formed through a community.
I argue that such habit formation is deeply engaged with faith formation. This is because faith itself can be formed, become a habit, grow, and even facilitate the growth of human virtue. With this possibility, I find that the addressed four pillars of habit formation offer important implications for faith formation. First, proficiency requires Christian educators to pose a critical question if we have missed considering qualitative maturity of one’s faith by focusing solely onthe astonishing educational effects of repetition. Second, willingness demands Christian educators to consider whether Christian education is done out of autonomous will, not by compulsion and coercion. Third, practicality implies that just as habit aims for a more excellent life by performing actions, faith should be practiced by certain actions such as gestures and words. Finally, communality requires that Christian education and faith formation should be communal rather than individual, and further create a communal culture among faith community members.
With the analysis of habit formation and its four pillars, I discuss that Christian education is not merely a kind of education that passes certain knowledge but rather faith formation which is possible with habit formation. For this habit formation related to faith, Christian education neccessitates a lens of ‘Bildung,’ through which people can expand their horizons, communicate with one another, reflect on themselves, and establish better self-identities. I suggest that such a lens be equipped by the four pillars of Christian education that I draw from those of habit formation, including proficiency, willingness, practicality, and communality.
