The Need for Advancement in Geriatric Dentistry: Evidence from South Korea's Demographic and Oral Health Trends

초록

This study highlights the critical need for advancements in geriatric dentistry within the context of South Korea’s rapidly aging population. By analyzing extensive data from national healthcare databases, statistical services, and published literature from 2000 to 2024, it evaluates the current status and growing demand for geriatric dental care. Several critical challenges were identified, particularly the high prevalence of systemic diseases among the elderly. Approximately 84.3% of elderly patients have at least one chronic condition requiring medication. Additionally, root caries is increasingly common, with 89% of older adults having at least one exposed root surface vulnerable to decay. In response to the rising demand for healthcare services, geriatric dental clinics are projected to grow by 178%. However, a significant gap persists between existing dental services and the specialized care needed for the elderly population. This study concludes that immediate actions are essential, including the development of geriatric-specific protocols and training programs, the integration of medical and dental services, and the reinforcement of preventive care strategies. These advancements are vital to addressing the complex healthcare demands of South Korea’s rapidly aging society and ensuring optimal oral health outcomes for future generations of elderly citizens.
