Transnational Field and Transnational Identity among Women Marriage Migrants in Korea

This paper is aimed to reveal the family relationship and identities of women migrants in Korea focusing on the transnational field and transnational identity concepts. In order to do to, the author collected data using focus group and in‐depth interviews. The findings are as follows:First, with the migration the women marriage migrants do not cut, but extend the relationship with their home family across the borders. Contrary to the earlier findings, the women marriage migrants did not go through a one‐sided adaptation process, but their husbands also went through a mutual adaptation process. This mutual adaptation occurs through the experience of transnational field. The experience of transnational field includes remittance to home family in the economic domain, invitation of families from the home country and home visiting, which can be referred as social domains. Transculturation of migration melange is the transnational field experience in the cultural domain. It also turned out that the transnational fields become more rich and cumulated as time goes by, that is, as significant moments in their lives such as marriage migration, childbirth, and home visiting are unfolded.
Second, these processes of adaptation and experience of transnational field slowly change the identity of women marriage migrants as the important moments in their lives are unfolded: first,with the migration, they are deterritorialized from their localities of origins: second, they are reterritorialized, that is, relocalized, as they adapt to Korean life: and then with home visiting, they rediscover their home country, utilize it as their strengths and are empowered,hoping to have a double identity or transnational identity, with their feet in both societies. This change occurs not only among the women marriage migrants but also among many of their husbands.
The theoretical implications of this research is that marriage migration is an example of second modern transformation showing the characteristics of the second modernity, that is, the blurring of borders. Their experience of transnational field and emergence of transnational identity also show the blurring of national borders.
However, we can see both individualizing and family‐orientation among these women marriage migrants. This is what I termed “family‐oriented individualizationʺ, which is different from the individualization of the West,
