A Study on the Characteristics of Natural Environment outside the Hospital and its Healing with Interface Space Design

The natural environment is the place where the original humans inhabited in evolutionary history.
Humans have an innate preference for specific natural environments in genes. The healing effect of the natural environment is also constantly being confirmed by humans. Nowadays, with the acceleration of the globalization process, the opportunity for people to contact with the natural environment has reduced, and people's physical and psychological problems have gradually increased. In addition, with the creation of multiple spaces, the psychological difference appears between space and space, while modern transition space can reduce this difference. In this context, the hospital has become an important space that reflects the healing effect. This research studies the healing effect of the interface space in the transition space generated by the combination of hospital buildings and the natural environment outside the hospital. Through theoretical investigations of evolutionary psychology and neuroscience, this study understands that the natural environment has a positive healing effect on humans. On the basis of the healing of the natural environment, the knowledge of evolutionary psychology is used to redefine the transition space between the natural environment and the hospital building and divide it into three types. Taking advantage of the healing properties of the natural environment, with the psychological and spatial healing properties of the hospital, based on current research, the healing features appearing after the defined interface space are made into an analytical framework. Combined with the 2019 Newsweek General Hospital Rankings and the Environmental General Hospital Rankings surveyed by the Korea Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Health Insurance Review and Evaluation Institute, three general hospitals in Seoul are selected, namely Seoul St. Mary's Hospital, Severance Hospital, and Chung-Ang University Hospital. The results of a questionnaire survey of selected hospitals show that complexity, readability, and communication are most prominent among the healing features of the nine interface spaces. On the basis of this result, the design direction of the external interface space of the hospital is proposed. This study provides a method to analyze the healing effect for the interface space and explore the applicable solutions. We hope that the results of this research will provide some help for the design of the external interface space of the Korean General Hospital.
