漢字敎育 效率性 提高를 위한 略字化의 必要性 (Needs to Simplify Chinese Character as a Measure to Promote Efficiency in Classical Chinese Education)

초록

본고는 교육부가 2018년부터 초등학교 교과서에 일정한 수의 漢字倂記를 실시할 예정이라는 발표를 계기로 한자교육의 효율성을 높이는 방안에 대해 나름대로 의견을 정리하여 제시하였다. 이를 위해 한자의 약자화에 성공한 중국과 일본의 한자정책의 배경과 역사적 진행사항 그리고 성과는 물론 W대학교 학생들을 상대로 실시한 한자 인지능력 조사결과를 토대로 한자 약자화의 必要性에 대해서 살펴보았다.
한ㆍ중ㆍ일의 3국 가운데 중국과 일본은 문자개혁을 단행하여 중국은 簡化字를, 일본은 常用漢字의 略字를 사용하고 있으나 우리나라는 이들 국가와는 달리 康熙字典體의 正字인 전통한자를 사용하고 있다.
중국은 國字인 한자사용의 불편함을 해소하고 민중의 문맹률을 낮춘다는 課題 해결을 위해한자의 약자화를 시행하였으며, 일본은 방대한 수와 복잡한 용법이 생활의 불편함과 국민의 문화수준을 떨어뜨린다고 전제하고 이를 해소하기 위한 방편으로 한자의 수를 제한하고 획수가 많고 字體가 복잡한 한자를 간략화 하였다.
우리도 전통한자의 사용으로 인한 많은 문제점을 해결하기 위해서는 한자의 약자화가 필요하다. 물론 한자의 약자화가 곧 한자교육의 모든 문제점을 해결할 수는 없을 것이다. 또한 일부에서 제기하고 있는 고전해독의 불편한 점 등의 문제점 또한 간과할 수는 없다. 그러나 지나친 필획의 감소가 아니라면 약자화를 통해 얻어지는 효과가 훨씬 크다고 보기 때문에 문제점은 수정하거나 보완한다면 별 무리가 없으리라 본다.
한자의 약자화는 한자교육의 효율성을 높여 학생들에게 좀 더 쉽게 한자를 이해시키고 국민들에게 한자를 좀 더 편리하게 사용할 수 있게 할 것이다. 또한 주변 국가들과의 국제적 교류나 원만한 소통도 원활히 이루어질 것이다. 따라서 우리나라 한자의 약자화는 반드시 필요하며, 그 연구의 가치 또한 있다고 하겠다.

영어초록

This study aims to compile controversies and present my personal opinions regarding the measures to promote efficiency of classical Chinese education in Korea on the occasion of the Ministry of Education's declaration to intend introduction of Chinese character for certain number of words in the elementary school textbooks starting from 2018. For this aim, reference was made to the backgrounds, chronological processes and outcomes of the classic Chinese education policies in China and Japan both of which succeeded in simplifying Chinese character. Besides, an effort was made in this paper to study the necessity of simplifying Chinese character based on the results from the survey conducted to W University students to check their knowledge of Chinese character.
Among the three countries which are using Chinese character, China and Japan have successfully simplified Chinese character through the writing revolutions. China, for instance, began using simplified letters and Japan decided to use certain number of common Chinese character in abbreviated forms. In contrast, however, Korea has continued to use the traditional Chinese character of the shape found in Kangxijidian (康熙字典).
China, the country of origin of Chinse character, embarked on simplifying its letters with a slogan to eliminate the inconvenience caused when using the traditional letters and to cut down illiteracy of its people. Japan, assuming that colossal numbers of Chinese character and their complicated usages would be the source of troubles in the lives of its people and might decrease their cultural level, took decisive action for limiting the usage of Chinese character in certain numbers and simplifying some complex Chinese character.
I think we, Korea, too have to simplify classic Chinese character used commonly in our daily lives in an attempt to drive out difficulties generated from the use of complicated traditional Chinese character. It is a matter of course that simplification of Chinese character can not simply be a direct solution to all kinds of problems connected with classic Chinese character education. Besides, we can not deny the assertion from certain part of our society that it would be very difficult and inconvenient to read classic literature without knowing traditional Chinese character. No particular hardship would, however, seem to result from simplification of Chinese character, if they are not exceedingly simplified or shortened, and as far as problems, once occurred, are immediately corrected and complemented, because the effects of simplification of Chinese character must be bigger than not.
Simplified Chinese character could also bring greater efficiency in teaching students to understand Chinese character more easily and making people use them more conveniently. They will also help intensify international exchanges and smooth communications with neighboring countries. In conclusion, it should definitely be suggested to simplify Chinese character in Korea without delay and it would be worth of studying this issue in more depth.
