초록

In British economic history, the late 17th and early 18th century Financial Revolution roughly overlaps with the “golden age of piracy.” From the beginning of the long 18th century, while merchant capitalism produced lucrative commercial ventures through the Atlantic trade routes, pirates roamed widely over the high seas. This paper attempts a reinterpretation of the meaning and significance of piracy and adventure on the high seas as these are represented in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island (1883). By contextualizing swashbuckling piratic adventure against the backdrop of the Financial Revolution—this age of commercial venture and high seas adventure—the paper attempts to elucidate the political and economic significance of the pirate during the eighteenth century, the temporal narrative background of Treasure Island, as well as its reception in the late Victorian age, when the novel was first written and widely read. I will argue that pirates and piracy constitute the dark side of the landscape of finance capitalism. By exploring the trajectories of the fictional pirate, Stevenson critically reflects on the ways in which the new age of speculation actively undermines the dichotomies between “us” and “others,” the ventures of the landed gentry and those of the sea-borne adventurer, the gentleman of birth and the gentleman of fortune, the concepts of moral virtue and of economic interest.
