감화원이 있는 섬-영화 <해연>(1948)과 남한 초기 소년 수용시설 (Island with Reformatory School-Film Haeyeon(Seagull) and Correctional Institutions for Juvenile Delinquents in Early South Korea)

초록

이 논문은 기존연구가 주목해온 건국 서사의 프레임을 넘어서 영화 <해연>(1948)을 접근하는 다양한 길을 모색하고자 한다. <해연>은 1930년대 이후 비행소년을 소재로 한 영화적 계보 안에 위치되는 영화로서, 해방 전후에 한반도에서 상영되었던 비행소년 소재 영화들과 직간접적으로 연결되어 있다. 무엇보다 이 영화는 남한 초기 비행소년의 급증과 소년 수용시설의 설립 등 제작 당시의 구체적인 사회적 사실과 관련되어 있다. 이 논문은 <해연>을 감화원 소재 영화로서 접근하고, 부랑아와 비행소년을 ‘순애의 훈육’으로 교화한다는 명분으로 정당화된 감화원의 재현 양상을 당대의 사회문화적 맥락과 관련해 검토한다. 우선, 해방 직후 비행소년 및 소년 수용시설 문제를 에드워드 J. 플래나간(Edward J. Flanagan)의 방한을 즈음해 형성된 ‘플래나간-보이스 타운-영화 <소년의 거리(Boys Town)>’의 연관성과 더불어 검토한다. 다음으로, <해연>의 제작 배경을 해방 전후 한반도에서 상영되었던 비행소년 소재 영화들과의 관계에서 추적하고, <해연>의 감화원을 남한 초기 소년 수용시설의 설립 및 확충과 연관해 살펴본다. 마지막으로, 영화에서 서사의 두 축을 이루는 교사와 원생을 중심으로 ‘순애의 훈육’이라는 감화 교육의 이상 및 그 실현과 관련된 영화의 재현을 분석하고, 다른 비행소년 소재 영화나 남한 초기의 연극이나 영화와 비교해 이 영화의 특징을 설명한다. 이를 통해, 이 논문은 <해연>이 인도주의적 담론과 치안 담론이 착종된 남한 초기의 소년 수용시설 담론과 연결되는 영화이며, 해방 후의 수용시설에 대해 다시 생각해보게 하는 역사적 장소라고 주장한다.

This paper is an attempt to find various ways to approach the film Haeyeon (Seagull)(1948) beyond the frame of the nation-building narrative that existing researches have been focusing on. Haeyeon is a film located within the cinematic genealogies about delinquent boys since the 1930s, especially directly or indirectly connected to films based on juvenile delinquents, which were screened on the Korean Peninsula before and after liberation. Moreover, the film is related to specific social facts at the time of production, including the surge of juvenile delinquents and the correctional institutions for juvenile delinquents in early South Korea. This paper approaches Haeyeon as a film about reformatory school and examines the representation of correctional institution justified under the pretext of enlightening the vagrant and the delinquent boys into “discipline of genuine love” in relation to the socio-cultural context of the time. First of all, it considers the issue of vagrants and delinquent boys and correctional institutions for juvenile delinquents immediately after liberation, along with the connection of the “Flanagan-Boys Town-the film Boys Town” formed around Edward J. Flanagan’s visit to South Korea. Next, it traces the film’s production background in relation to the juvenile delinquency films screened on the Korean Peninsula, and examines the reformatory school in Haeyeon in relation to the establishment and expansion of correctional institutions in early South Korea. Finally, it analyzes the reenactment of the film Haeyeon regarding the ideal and practices of the “discipline of genuine love” between teacher and student who form the two pillars of the narrative, and explains the characteristics of the film compared to other juvenile delinquency films or early South Korean plays and films. In doing so, the paper argues that Haeyeon is a film linked to the early South Korean discourse on correctional institutions for juvenile delinquents, which is a complex intersection of humanitarian and security discourse, and is a historical place to rethink the post-colonial detention facilities.
