초록

본문에서는 이청준 『신화를 삼킨 섬』를 중심으로 4ㆍ3의 비극은 섬의 자생적 한계에서 비롯되었고, 이에 대한 극복은 기억을 영속화하는 무속적 해원 방식에 기대고 있음을 논증하고자 했다. 섬의 자생적 한계란 육지부의 지배욕망에 의해 양분되어 대리전을 치를 수밖에 없는 상황을 말한다. 이는 고려조 김통정과 김방경의 대립, 근대 들어서는 좌우 대립이 그 대표적인 사례라 할 수 있다. 텍스트에서는 4.3 희생자를 둘러싼 청죽회와 한얼회의 갈등이 서사의 한 축을 이룬다. 이러한 대립과 갈등은 섬 공간이 가진 환경적 특성, 고립과 단절이라는 속성으로 인해 육지부보다 더 치열한 형태로 전개된다. 섬 공간의 폐쇄적 특성은 각 마을마다 좌정한 당신(堂神)에도 영향을 미치는데, 이들은 대부분 초월계나 육지부에서 패퇴하여 추방된 신들이다. 이 신령들은 자신의 처지나 다름없는 섬사람들의 선택에 의해 마을에 좌정하게 된다. 당신을 모시는 심방을 비롯해 섬사람들은 섬을 탈주하고자 하지만 결국은 섬 공간을 떠나지 않는다. 그 이유는 섬의 자생적 한계를 받아들이면서도 육지부 권력이 미치지 못하거나 그 권력을 교란하는 제3의 영역이 존재하기 때문이다. 이 영역에서는 전면적 부정의 방법론이 통용되는데, 육지부의 기획에 의해 만들어진 권력/저항의 구도가 무력화된다. 그 공간은 로고스적 성격과 대별되는 미토스적 성격을 발휘하는 곳으로 신화가 내면화된 영역이다. 이곳에서는 굿이라는 무속적 제의를 통해 섬사람들의 해원(혹은 구원)이 이뤄지고 4ㆍ3의 (수행적) 진실이 현현된다. ‘풀이’는 두 가지를 모두 구현하는데 풀어내기를 통한 기억하기의 방식으로 섬 특유의 신화성을 복원하여 로고스적 세계-육지부의 지배욕망-을 넘어선다.

영어초록

In the text, I tried to argue that the tragedy of ‘the 4ㆍ3 Incident’(the Jeju 4ㆍ3 Uprising and Massacre) originated from the island's self-sustaining limitations, and that overcoming this relies on a shamanic method of liberation that perpetuates memories. The island's natural limitations refer to a situation in which it is divided by the mainland's desire for domination and has no choice but to fight a proxy war. Representative examples of this include the conflict between Kim Tong-jeong and Kim Bang-gyeong in the Goryeo Dynasty, and the conflict between left and right in the modern era. In the work, the conflict between Cheongjukhoe and Haneolhoe surrounding the 4ㆍ3 Incident’s victims forms one axis of the narrative. These confrontations and conflicts develop in a more intense form than on the mainland due to the environmental characteristics and isolation and disconnection of island spaces. The closed nature of the island space also affects the gods seated in each village, and most of these are gods who were defeated and exiled from the transcendental world or the mainland. These spirits sit in the village by the choice of the islanders, who are in the same situation as themselves. The islanders, including ‘Simbang’(Jeju’s shaman), who worships God, try to escape the island, but in the end they do not leave the island space. The reason is that, while accepting the island's self-sustaining limitations, there is a third area that is beyond the power of the mainland government or that disrupts its power. In this area, the methodology of total denial is used, and the structure of power/resistance created by the land ministry's plan is neutralized. That space is a place where Mithos characteristics, which are distinct from Logos characteristics, are demonstrated and is an area where myth is internalized. Here, the liberation (or salvation) of the islanders is achieved through a shamanic ritual called ‘Gut’, and the (performative) truth of the 4ㆍ3 Incident is revealed. ‘Puri’ embodies both, and by restoring the island’s unique mythology as a way of remembering through unraveling, it goes beyond the logos world – the desire for domination by the landowners.
