『根本說一切有部毘奈耶』에서의 인과응보에 관한 내러티브 고찰 - 붓다의 주변 인물들을 중심으로 (A Study on the Karmic Causality of the Narrative Characters around the Buddha in the Mūlasarvāstivādavinaya)

『根本說一切有部毘奈耶』의 내러티브들은 믿음(bhakti)과 인과응보 사상을 기반으로 한 공덕쌓기와 현세나 내세에서 그 과보를 받는 신앙적인 면이 강조된 아바다나의 모습을 보이고 있다. 때문에, 『근본설일체유부비나야』에는 붓다의 선악업에 관한 이야기들이 많이 담겨져 있다.
또한, 『근본설일체유부비나야』에는 붓다 이외에도 그의 제자들과 주변 인물들의 이야기도 있는데, 그들의 이야기는 불교도들에게 더욱 성취 가능한 모델을 제공하고 있다.
야소다라와 라훌라의 전생 악업 이야기는 각자의 업과 공동업을 통하여 가족으로서의 애착과 그들이 받는 과보를 그리고 있다. 목갈랴나는 그가 신통제일임에도 불구하고 지혜의 부족으로 인해 받는 과보와 부모와의 업연을 보여주고 있으며, 아난다는 그의 뛰어난 재주와 함께 전생의 악업으로 인한 고통의 이야기들을 보여주고 있다.
본고에서는 붓다의 주변 인물들, 야소다라와 라훌라, 목갈랴나와 아난다의 이야기를 통해서 『근본설일체유부비나야』에서 인과응보 내지는 업을 강조하는 내러티브의 특성을 살펴보도록 하겠다. 특히 악업 내러티브를 통하여 『근본설일체유부비나야』가 전달하고자 하는 메시지가 무엇인지 살펴보고자 한다.

영어초록

In the Mūlasarvāstivādavinaya, there are a number of the Buddha’s karmic narratives or avadānas. Besides, the Mūlasarvāstivādavinaya provides a significant number of karmic narratives of the characters around the Buddha. Their stories are about their past karma, retribution, aspiration and attainment of arhat or nirvāṇa. Since they are inferior to the Buddha, they supply the possible models to ordinary monks and lay-people.
The attitude of the Mūlasarvāstivādavinaya to the Buddha and his family, especially Yaśodharā and Rāhula, is more complex, and different from that of other karmic episodes. Besides the Buddha and two characters creating collective karma, each of them makes their own individual karma. This structure is difficult to explain just using the “good deed brings good result, bad deed brings bad result” formula.
Maudgalyāyana with Śāriputra did not participate in the collective bad karma of the Buddha in the past. While the future Gautama Buddha and his 498 disciples were insulting monks, saying they should be given barley, these two disciples said that Vipaśyin Buddha deserved the celestial food offering. That is the reason why later, while the Buddha and his other 498 disciples were suffering from eating barley which was horse fodder, Maudgalyāyana and Śāriputra received the celestial food offering. Regarding Maudgalyāyana’s bad karma, there are two references in the Mūlasarvāstivādavinaya: One is a verse in the section on disciples’ karma episodes in the Bhaiṣajyavastu, while the other is in the Kṣudrakavastu.
It is noteworthy that among the thirty-six Elders’ stories of the Bhaiṣajyavastu of the Mūlasarvāstivādavinaya, there is no story of Ānanda. However, his karmic episodes are contained in the Saṃghabhedavastu of the Mūlasarvāstivādavinaya. Unlike in the Apadāna, the Mūlasarvāstivādavinaya tells good and bad karmic stories of Ānanda. Moreover, his life in the Mūlasarvāstivādavinaya is different from that in other texts.
This paper aims to show the characteristic of the karmic causality of the narratives of the Mūlasarvāstivādavinaya through the stories of the characters around the Buddha like Yaśodharā, Rāhula, Maudgalyāyana and Ānanda.
